Part of the thrill of genealogy is sharing our discoveries with those we love, so it can be disappointing when our family members and friends have no interest in the subject. Creating captivating ancestral stories from our ancestors’ names, dates, and places is like turning fish eggs into caviar: the facts don’t change, but the way we describe them makes all the difference.
Pam Vestal is a professional genealogist and speaker who turned her focus to her longtime love of genealogy after a 20-year writing career. Her articles have appeared in the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly and the FGS's Forum magazine, and her lectures take her from coast to coast. Pam specializes in conducting genealogical research and then turning that information into illustrated stories that even non-genealogists can enjoy.
This lecture is part of a collaboration with 6 libraries: Glen Cove, Gold Coast, Bayville, Oyster Bay, Manhasset, and Locust Valley. Join us each month for a different aspect of genealogy .*This program is brought to you courtesy of the Genealogy Collective and is sponsored by the Gold Coast Library.

Although Gilded Age women in the upper and lower classes had many differences, they had one similarity. Women, viewed as second best to men, were expected to be content with this role in society. Topics include: ovariotomies, sedation of menopausal women, free-bleeding, tapeworm larvae, meat masks, mourning, and hidden mother photos. Presented by Ehris Urban & Velya Jancz-Urban; the Grounded Goodwife.

American television was all set to launch in the late 1930s, but its progress was interrupted by the start of World War II. Finally, by the end of the 1940s, NBC and CBS began broadcasting to their east coast affiliates. They offered viewers a wide variety
of programs: situation comedies, vaudeville-style revues, and most impressively, live original dramas. Within a few years, these anthology programs, like Kraft Television Theatre and Ford Television Theatre launched the careers of soon-to-be famous
directors like Arthur Penn and John Frankenheimer, actors like Paul Newman and James Dean, and playwrights like Paddy Chayevsky and Rod Serling. But by the end of the 1950s, the era of live TV “theater” was over. So too was New York City as a center of
TV production. This presentation will look at the forces that made this “golden age” such an intriguing chapter in TV history and why it was so short-lived (including brief examinations of blacklisting and the TV quiz show scandals). Presented by Brian Rose.
