Virtual Genealogy: How to Write Ancestral Stories Your Relatives Will Want to Read

Part of the thrill of genealogy is sharing our discoveries with those we love, so it can be disappointing when our family members and friends have no interest in the subject. Creating captivating ancestral stories from our ancestors’ names, dates, and places is like turning fish eggs into caviar: the facts don’t change, but the way we describe them makes all the difference.

Pam Vestal is a professional genealogist and speaker who turned her focus to her longtime love of genealogy after a 20-year writing career. Her articles have appeared in the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly and the FGS's Forum magazine, and her lectures take her from coast to coast. Pam specializes in conducting genealogical research and then turning that information into illustrated stories that even non-genealogists can enjoy.

This lecture is part of a collaboration with 6 libraries: Glen Cove, Gold Coast, Bayville, Oyster Bay, Manhasset, and Locust Valley. Join us each month for a different aspect of genealogy .*This program is brought to you courtesy of the Genealogy Collective and is sponsored by the Gold Coast Library.

Registration begins on May 26 at 9:30 am

NSPC: The Not-so-Golden Life of the Gilded Age Wife

Although Gilded Age women in the upper and lower classes had many differences, they had one similarity. Women, viewed as second best to men, were expected to be content with this role in society. Topics include: ovariotomies, sedation of menopausal women, free-bleeding, tapeworm larvae, meat masks, mourning, and hidden mother photos. Presented by Ehris Urban & Velya Jancz-Urban; the Grounded Goodwife.

The North Shore Programming Consortium consists of five local libraries (Bayville, Glen Cove, Gold Coast, Locust Valley and Oyster Bay) that have come together to bring our patrons more of a variety in adult programming in a more cost effective way. We hope you enjoy the programs now accessible from the Consortium!

Registration begins on Friday, May 26 at 9:30 am

Virtual Genealogy: Genealogy A to Z: A Trivia Adventure

Trivia contests seem to be all the rage now. But if you were ever a fan of the television show Jeopardy or the game Trivial Pursuit, here’s a way to test your genealogy knowledge. With genealogy expert Thomas MacEntee as presenter, you can participate in a fun, fast paced, and educational genealogy trivia game. Every participant will receive a handout at the END of the adventure complete with genealogy trivia questions and answers!

Thomas MacEntee is a Baby Boomer guy with a love of punk rock music but also art history who somehow

“fell” into the technology industry almost 40 years ago, and then left a lucrative IT career to pursue his

love of family history and genealogy. Technology and historical research are opposites, but “tech people”

like Thomas are needed to guide today’s genealogists through the maze of options so they can deploy the

best apps and devices to break down research brick walls. Thomas MacEntee: author, educator, advocate, entrepreneur, and that “genealogy guy” who helps you accomplish your family history goals.

This lecture is part of a collaboration with 6 libraries: Glen Cove, Gold Coast, Bayville, Oyster Bay, Manhasset, and Locust Valley. Join us each month for a different aspect of genealogy .

*This program is brought to you courtesy of the Genealogy Collective and is sponsored by the Bayville Library.

Lecture: Dwight Peltzer Experience
Evolution of an Artist:
Dwight Peltzer grew up in rural Minnesota. The piano was his life. His unusual gift took him to stages all over the US, Canada, and Europe. He gave over 200 concerts a year. He performed for royalty and in iconic concert halls. He was awarded two Fulbrights and eventually became a Fulbright Professor in the UK. His work is in the Library of Congress. His classical expertise led him to play with the major orchestras and conductors of the day. He was lauded by critics everywhere he went. He could have enjoyed a very successful career at the top of his classical world, but he chose to evolve with the avant-garde movement. He was sought after by many composers, but the one who really set him free to explore new music was John Cage.
In this talk, Mr. Peltzer will share insights about the journey and anecdotes about his experiences along the way.

NSPC: The Golden Age of Television: What Made the 1950s so special for American TV

American television was all set to launch in the late 1930s, but its progress was interrupted by the start of World War II. Finally, by the end of the 1940s, NBC and CBS began broadcasting to their east coast affiliates. They offered viewers a wide variety
of programs: situation comedies, vaudeville-style revues, and most impressively, live original dramas. Within a few years, these anthology programs, like Kraft Television Theatre and Ford Television Theatre launched the careers of soon-to-be famous
directors like Arthur Penn and John Frankenheimer, actors like Paul Newman and James Dean, and playwrights like Paddy Chayevsky and Rod Serling. But by the end of the 1950s, the era of live TV “theater” was over. So too was New York City as a center of
TV production. This presentation will look at the forces that made this “golden age” such an intriguing chapter in TV history and why it was so short-lived (including brief examinations of blacklisting and the TV quiz show scandals). Presented by Brian Rose.

The North Shore Programming Consortium consists of five local libraries(Bayville, Glen Cove, Gold Coast, Locust Valley and Oyster Bay) that have come together to bring our patrons more of a variety in adult programming in a more cost effective way.

We hope you enjoy the programs now accessible from the Consortium!
