NSPC: If the Broom Fits...

Have you ever wondered why witches are depicted as riding on brooms through the nighttime sky? You're never going to look at sweeping the same way again. How did the benevolent image of a wise woman transform into the malevolent figure of the witch we know today? Presented by Ehris Urban & Velya Jancz-Urban; the Grounded Goodwife.

The North Shore Programming Consortium consists of five local libraries (Bayville, Glen Cove, Gold Coast, Locust Valley and Oyster Bay) that have come together to bring our patrons more of a variety in adult programming in a more cost effective way. We hope you enjoy the programs now accessible from the Consortium!

This program is hosted by the Locust Valley Library.

Yoga is for everyone. However, when online, it is up to the individual to assess whether they are ready for the class that they have chosen. Obviously, if you suffer from specific injuries or diseases it is best to consult with your physician first. The practice of yoga requires you – the practitioner – to gauge the safety of your practice within your personal physical limitations. It is better to build up slowly than to force and strain. Whilst one may feel exertion one should also feel relaxed. The techniques and suggestions presented in this website are not intended to substitute for proper medical advice. Basics of Medicare

SSNA (Senior Services of North America) will teach you the basics of choosing the right medicare plans.

There are ever-changing Medicare coverages that many seniors are unaware of. At these seminars, which are approximately 30 minutes, we examine how a senior can navigate the changes to Medicare as well as learning about the benefits that they may be eligible for. Often, we hear of the medical nightmares that seniors go through, and it is our mission to address these concerns. Some of the points discussed are:

                      1. Tap into programs to lower your prescription drug costs the easy way
                      2. Learning how to find a Medicare plan that makes sense for you
                      3. Do TV ads really tell you the truth about plans?
                      4. Utilizing federal subsidies/programs to lower your Part B premium.
                      5. Learn about what to look for in a plan to have the suitable coverage you are looking for.

Registration begins on Friday, September 22nd at 9:30 am.

Virtual Genealogy: Immagini di Antenati: Photos of our Italian Ancestors

Photographs can bring our ancestors to life in exciting and moving ways. In some cases, a family photo may be the only remaining evidence of what someone looked like, while in other cases, they can provide significant genealogical clues, helping us to overcome those pesky brick walls. This talk will delve into all aspects of using historical photos in our genealogical research, along with introducing methods of *finding* photos of ancestors, and discussion of the very real challenges of photo organization.

Michael Cassara is a professional genealogist and lecturer based in New York City, specializing in Italian/Sicilian genealogy, New York and New Jersey research, and genealogical technology. He has frequently presented at regional societies as well as national conferences, including five years of presentations at RootsTech, the 2018 Association of Professional Genealogists Professional Management Conference, a popular 2019 APG Webinar on genealogical technology, as well as talks at FGS, OGS, the New York State Family History Conference, and more. Michael holds a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University (OL19) and is a graduate of the ProGen Study Group (ProGen 43). He is the Past President of the Italian Genealogical Group (ItalianGen.org) and blogs about his research at http://www.digiroots.net. You can find him on Twitter and Facebook at @DigiRoots

Registration begins on Friday, September 22nd at 9:30 am. Please register with a valid email address so we can send the zoom link.

NSPC: Adventures of an Eclipse Chaser

To witness a total eclipse of the Sun is a privilege that comes in general, to a few people. Many live and die without ever beholding one. Once seen, however, it is a phenomenon never to be forgotten. The incredible panoply of phenomena that occur when the Sun becomes completely covered by the Moon -- the radiance of the pearly corona of the Sun which can be seen at no other time; the scarlet tongues of hydrogen gas rising from the surface of the darkened to heights of many thousands of miles; the unaccustomed presence of the brighter stars and planets in the daytime; the darkness of twilight and sudden fall of temperature, all remain indelibly planted in our memory for a lifetime. Expeditions and tours have been sent halfway around the world to observe total eclipses. But on April 8, 2024, those who live in the Northeast US and New England will have one delivered at their doors. Over the last 50 years, Joe Rao has chased 13 eclipses around the globe, by land, sea and air. His PowerPoint talk, "The Adventures of an Eclipse Chaser," details the interesting . . . funny . . . and poignant occurrences that he has experienced in his efforts to briefly “bask in the shadow of the Moon.”

This program is hosted by the Gold Coast Library.

Sisu

Cast: Jorma Tommila (Actor), Aksel Hennie (Actor)

Summary: During WWII, a solitary prospector crosses paths with Nazis in northern Finland. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover he is no ordinary miner. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word “sisu,” the legendary ex-commando will embody what it means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And this one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back — even if it means killing every last Nazi in his path.

NSPC: Bog Bodies of Iron Age Europe

In this program we will discuss Bog Bodies, the eerily well-preserved remains of hundreds of people – men, women, and children – found in the swamps and peaty wetlands of northern Europe. One startling thing that archaeologists have learned is that most of the bog bodies died violently before their burials hidden beneath the peat. In this program, we will discuss who the bog bodies were during life, how they died, and the science behind their amazing preservation. Presented by Archaeologist Patty Hamrick.

This program is hosted by the Bayville Free Library.

In the 1950s, saleswoman Brownie Wise propelled Tupperware to skyrocketing success through home party sales. NSPC: Understanding the Presidency

“The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America." Created by Article II of the Constitution, much of the power of the presidency can be found in the actions of those who have occupied the office. In this discussion, we will analyze the intent of the Framers and the text of the supreme law of the land regarding the chief executive.

Yoga - In Person

Yoga is for everyone.

However, when online, it is up to the individual to assess whether they are ready for the class that they have chosen.

Obviously, if you suffer from specific injuries or diseases it is best to consult with your physician first.

The practice of yoga requires you – the practitioner – to gauge the safety of your practice within your personal

physical limitations. It is better to build up slowly than to force and strain. Whilst one may feel exertion one should also feel relaxed.

The techniques and suggestions presented in this website are not intended to substitute for proper medical advice.
Consult your physician before beginning any new exercise program.

OBEN library / Kimberly Mercadante, RYT assumes no responsibility for injuries suffered while practicing these techniques, AND BY PARTICIPATING IN THIS PROGRAM, YOU AGREE TO RELEASE THE OYSTER BAY-EAST NORWICH LIBRARY AND ITS AGENTS FROM ANY INJURIES OR DAMAGE YOU MAY SUFFER.

Basics of Medicare

In this encore presentation, SSNA (Senior Services of North America) will teach you the basics of choosing the right medicare plans.

Registration begins on Friday, November 17th at 9:30 am.
