Economic Warfare

Waging economic warfare consists of a variety of measures including implementing sanctions to fomenting labor strikes. Such tools are utilized by states to hinder their enemies. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, economic warfare has been the main means for the west to challenge Russia. How effective will these sanctions be at convincing Russia to cease its war?

The session will consist of a short video providing information about the topic and a one-hour interactive discussion segment. A more detailed overview of the topic can be found at Foreign Policy Association - www.fpa.org. To ask questions about the program, email Pete Sheridan at psheridan3@nycap.rr.com.

Politics in Latin America

Electoral results in Latin America over the past four years have led many observers of the regional/political scene to discern a left-wing surge in the hemisphere, reminiscent of the so-called “Pink Tide” that swept the area some 20 years ago. But how much do these politicians actually have in common? What implication does their ascendency have for the region?

The session will consist of a short video providing information about the topic and a one-hour interactive discussion segment. A more detailed overview of the topic can be found at Foreign Policy Association - www.fpa.org. To ask questions about the program, email Pete Sheridan at psheridan3@nycap.rr.com.

Global Famine

Fears of global food shortages have followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has disrupted grain shipments from this major grain producer. But what about countries and regions that were suffering before this impending shortage? How is famine defined, and how is it different from simple food shortages? What, if any, remedies are there?

The session will consist of a short video providing information about the topic and a one-hour interactive discussion segment. A more detailed overview of the topic can be found at Foreign Policy Association - www.fpa.org. To ask questions about the program, email Pete Sheridan at psheridan3@nycap.rr.com.

Iran at a Crossroads

By the fall of 2022, Iran was in a state of turmoil due to widespread protests against government-enforced wearing of the hijab, a failing economy, an ineffective new president, and the looming succession of the country’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Abroad, renewal of the Iran nuclear deal seemed doubtful and tensions remain high between Iran, Israel, and Arab states. Many Iranians have lost hope of a better future. How should the United States deal with it?

The session will consist of a short video providing information about the topic and a one-hour interactive discussion segment. A more detailed overview of the topic can be found at Foreign Policy Association - www.fpa.org. To ask questions about the program, email Pete Sheridan at psheridan3@nycap.rr.com.

In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, join us as we explore America's Art Form. Vocalist Kaitlyn Fay, backed by the Most Jazzy Fellas, provides a program of standards and favorites, guided by literary readings from Hudson Valley Writers Guild president Thom Francis. All ages welcome!

Kaitlyn Fay is a jazz vocalist, woodwind specialist, and music educator. Her biggest musical influences are Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O'Day.  Max Caplan is a classical and jazz composer and pianist.  Bassist Mike Lawrence is in his 20th year as a music educator in the Schenectady City School District.  Nathan Schied is a drummer and audio engineer.

Host Thom Francis has been organizing, promoting, and hosting literary and arts events such as Nitty Gritty Slam, School of Night, Albany Poets Presents..., and the Albany Word Fest for over 20 years. As a poet and performer, Thom has been featured at poetry and spoken word events in upstate New York and beyond. He currently serves as president of the Hudson Valley Writers Guild.

This free program is made possible by a partnership with the Music Performance Trust Fund, the Mohawk Valley Society for Live Music, and the American Federation of Musicians Local 85-133.

Telling your Story - Memoir Writing

Join  Janine De Tillio Cammarata an award-winning author of seven books ranging from middle grade and young adult fantasy to non-fiction. She has over 30 years of experience with personal journaling and has been teaching creative writing and journaling for the past 20 years.

In this workshop she teaches journaling in order to access memoir—moments in time that tell your story. Whether it’s family history, writing about specific life events, this workshop provides a space to tell the only story that matters—yours. When you tell your story, you understand your ancestors, view your life with perspective, and if you choose--provide a gift to loved ones that only you can give. No matter what brings you to this workshop, you’ll leave with a positive journaling practice and techniques to write memoir. No experience is needed.  Please bring pen and paper.

Must be able to attend all 4 classes.
