Henny Sinding and the Gerda III
11:00 AM - 11:00 AM

In partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in New York and the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh is offering you the opportunity to visit Mystic Harbor! In this field trip, which runs from 45 minutes to an hour in length, students will virtually board an historic Danish lighthouse tender that was used to save Jews, ferrying them into neutral Sweden during WWII. Participants will also learn the true story of Henny Sinding, a young woman who took incredible risks for the sake of resistance, using her father’s boat, the Gerda III, and working with its crew to save some 300 Danish Jews. Attendees will be able to view the inside of the boat, ask questions, and hear from survivor Leo Goldberger, who was smuggled to safety on a Danish boat in the middle of the night. This program pairs perfectly with the novel, Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry; however, knowledge of the novel is not a prerequisite.

For Grades 3 and up.

The Quecreek Mine Rescue took place in Somerset County, PA, when nine miners were trapped underground from July 24-28, 2002.
