Join us for our Cooking Club at Sawyer Free Library! Normally each month we pick a cookbook, order copies for everyone to checkout at the Main Desk, everyone chooses a recipe, makes and brings it in. In these times of physical distancing, we are asking folks to make something from a cookbook checked out from our library, or using one they already have (or even, yes, found on the internet!)

THIS MONTH'S THEME: World Cuisine!

For April, we will be making something from another part of the world!  Could be a side dish, dessert or a main course itself!  Savoury or sweet! There will be global-themed cookbooks available for check out, as well!

Poetry Without Paper Contest 2021

This is the last week to submit your poetry for the 2021 Poetry Without Paper Contest! A poetry contest for children and teens who live in Gloucester or attend Gloucester schools! All poems must be submitted through our website between March 1 and April 30, 2021. Winners will be chosen from each of these 3 categories: elementary school students, middle school students and high school students. Prizes for 1st and 2nd place in each category: Cape Ann Gift Certificates ($100 & $50!)  3rd prize in each category: Poetry book! The Sawyer Free Library and Backyard Growers are co-hosting a virtual panel discussion around the topic of food waste.  The program goals include providing both broad knowledge and a local perspective of the issues of food waste, along with some actionable steps individuals can take to help make a difference in its reduction.

Brittany Peats, Program Manager, MA Food System Collaborative

Gary Sprague, Food Acquisition and Distribution Manager,  Open Door

Format:  Each panelist will have 8-10 minutes to talk about their organization's focus and their practical recommendations for ways to address food waste.  Following these remarks, Lara will moderate a 15-20 minute Q&A and will direct questions to panelists that have been received through the chat and in advance.

Big Data in Small Slices is the first program launching the Sawyer Free Library's Technology on the Horizon series. The Technology on the Horizon series puts the spotlight on individuals and organization in the Gloucester/North Shore area working with critical or emerging technologies in order to inspire individuals to learn about new technologies, the innovation happening in our community, and even new career paths. 

Join data analysis and visualization expert, author, and journalist Dianne Finch-Claydon to learn about how data visualization can be used to combat climate change, better our world, and even help your career. This is a presentation with some workshop components that does not require any previous knowledge on the topic. All are welcome!

Dianne Finch-Claydon is the author of the newly published Big Data in Small Slices: Data Visualization for Communicators, which will be available to checkout at SFL.

Howie is joined by Joe Kessler or Steve Latanision, two of the top fiddlers in the area. They also play mandolin and sing backup vocals. The duo performs Classic Rock covers and funny original songs (suitable for all ages). It’s a very lively show with great musicianship, nice vocal harmonies and a little humor here and
there. 

This performance will be outdoors in the amphitheatre on Dale Ave. Attendees should expect to wear masks and social distance.

We will review best practices as they relate to online profile creation and managing one’s account.
