Color Your Stress Away
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Do you like to color?  “In a sudden, unexpected, and generally curious development, grown-up versions of the doodle-books used by countless kindergartners have not only become a thing — but the thing, as far as millions of rapt Americans are concerned" said Dugan Arnett of The Boston Globe.

See what all the excitement is for yourself at our monthly Adult Coloring program! We are entering the fourth year of this program, and our patrons' love of coloring has not abated.

We'll have a selection of coloring pages for you to choose from, along with markers, colored pencils and gel pens. Join us for a relaxing evening and color your cares away...

The Living Person's Guide to Dying presents: Streamlining Your Possessions w/ Laura Weiler
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

In conjunction with NIH and NLM, Sharon Public Library presents A Living Person's Guide to Dying, a multi-part speaker series about death and dying, green burials, digital estate planning, and more. Although death is an inevitable reality of life, we often delay conversations about the topic until after the fact--a habit that can create unnecessary stress or confusion about our end-of-life wishes. The Library is seeking to launch an honest, open series of discussions around this important topic.

Tonight, join Laura Weiler, professional organizer of An Organized Start, for a presentation on downsizing and streamlining your home and possessions: how to put your home and possessions in order now, so that you can enjoy the benefits of an uncluttered home, pass on treasured items with intention, and ensure that your loved ones will not be faced with the daunting and emotional task of deciding these things for you during a difficult time.

"Death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it." --Haruki Murakami

This project has been funded in whole or in part with federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, under Cooperative Agreement UG4LM012347-01 with the University of Massachusetts, Worcester.

Going to Extremes
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
A nationally-known adventure travel journalist for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and The Providence Journal, Peter Mandel hunts his stories and photos in the world's far corners, including Antarctica, India, Egypt, Patagonia, the fjords of Norway, the mountain pathways of Japan, and the deserts of Africa.

The author of ten books, he'll show slides of his most extreme travel experiences —surviving a coup in Ecuador, visiting a ‘city’ of penguins at the South Pole, fishing for piranha on Brazil’s Rio Negro, floating in the Goodyear Blimp, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker, camping in the African bush, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty — and talk about how adventure travel turns to prose in today's media.

Mandel's books have been published by Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, HarperCollins and Henry Holt. One of his Boston Globe articles won the 2005 Lowell Thomas gold medal from the Society of American Travel Writers for adventure travel article of the year. Other articles, for The Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun, won Lowell Thomas Awards in 2003, 2006 and 2007.

Data Discovery: Information is Power by NNLM
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Data Discovery is a one-hour presentation hosted by the National Libraries of Medicine. It is designed to show learners new approaches to data discovery, with a specific focus on finding information about prevention of disease, individual research and discovery around biomedical topics, and the clinical domain of treatment. It discusses how health ties into the NIH resources and the national All of Us research program (AoU), a precision medicine initiative that was launched in 2015 by NIH to look at ways to individualize medicine for all adults in our nation. The program hopes to capture information from one million participants and review their lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors. The Data Discovery program will bring awareness of precision medicine to the citizen scientist as they look into today's data research.

The Living Person's Guide to Dying presents: Living in the Gift When Grieving w/ Marcy Venezia
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

In conjunction with NIH and NLM, Sharon Public Library presents A Living Person's Guide to Dying, a multi-part speaker series about death and dying, green burials, digital estate planning, and more. Although death is an inevitable reality of life, we often delay conversations about the topic until after the fact--a habit that can create unnecessary stress or confusion about our end-of-life wishes. The Library is seeking to launch an honest, open series of discussions around this important topic.

Tonight, join Marcy Venezia of Gleeworks Consulting for a presentation called "Living with the Gift When Grieving." It seeks to reframe dying as a time to find closure with friends and family, and uses visualizations, mindfulness practice, and games to teach participants how to experience "living in the gift." The session will use circle practice as an ages-old method to make sure each person is heard.

Suffragettes in Corselettes: The Evolution of Underwear and our 19th Amendment
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

For centuries, women have allowed themselves to be squeezed, twisted, and squished to conform to desired shapes. The history of underwear reveals a lot about women’s changing roles in society – how we perceive ourselves, and how we’re viewed by others. The 1910s saw an end to the hourglass figure with a tiny waist. Women were finally able to breathe and move more freely. Did the demise of tightlacing help women gain the right to vote in 1920? Underwear matters.

This presentation is hands-on and participatory. Tight corseting exerted 22 pounds of pressure on internal organs – find out what that actually feels like! Experience the difficulty of completing everyday tasks while wearing a corset. Have you ever relay raced in a hobble skirt?!

Herstory Unsanitized presentations explore the engrossing “taboo” subjects omitted from history. When a zany teacher and grounded green witch join forces, they create Grounded Goodwife. Velya Jancz-Urban’s gregarious personality and Ehris Urban’s serene energy enable this mother/daughter duo to connect with audiences. Their delivery is funny and frank. Laugh, grimace, and honor our foremothers’ journeys.

A Living Person's Guide to Dying: Green Burials w/ Green Burials Massachusetts, Inc

Tonight, join a representative from Green Burial Massachusetts, Inc. for a discussion about what green or natural burial is, its environmental benefits, and who to contact if you are interested in a natural burial for yourself.

Author Tina Cassidy Speaker Program
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join the Sharon/Stoughton League of Women Voters and the Friends' of the Sharon Public Library as they sponsor author Tina Cassidy.   Ms. Cassidy will discuss her new book,  "Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait?: Alice Paul, Woodrow Wilson, and the Fight for the Right to Vote".

As described by her agent, Richard Abate, Journalist Tina Cassidy’s vivacious biography of militant activist Alice Paul, one of the undersung heroes of the American women’s suffrage movement and a key player in the adoption of the 19th Amendment, looks at her in the context of and in contrast to President Woodrow Wilson, whom Paul and her peers considered their primary antagonist. Cassidy highlights, with clear admiration, Paul’s energy, vision, and persistence, crediting her with pushing for methods of engagement that are still key to protestors today—marches, picketing at the White House, lobbying, silent protest, noncooperation with arresting officers, and hunger strikes. Her radical push for a constitutional amendment put her in conflict with others in the movement like Carrie Chapman Catt, who preferred a slow, state-by-state approach grounded in the willingness of men to accept the idea of women voting. The depiction of Wilson is conflicted, sympathizing with his stress and fatigue, but ultimately painting him as a failure and an unworthy opponent. Cassidy’s descriptions of the protests and marches led by Paul and her supporters are delightful, full of boisterous color and drama, and featuring the full texts of the wordy (and cheeky) banners used. This engaging history brings the suffrage struggle to life.

Color Your Stress Away
