Author Talk: Marjorie Harshaw Robie
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Ipswich author Marjorie Harshaw Robie will present on her new book Dueling Dragons, recounting key years of tumultuous history in 19th century Ireland through the lives of 3 remarkable men on the front lines of revolution, and affording a living perspective on a well-known period of Irish life, rife with religious and political activism, the struggle to keep a free and fair press, and the hardships of surviving famine. Robie’s unique perspective comes from familial diaries she found after an epic search, and through other first-hand accounts from newspapers and personal letters of the time. She incorporates the lives of these 3 remarkable, interconnected men who struggled through much of the 19th century in a rapidly changing Ireland, and whose stories were told by their own hand, or the news of the day.

Marjorie Harshaw was born in Minneapolis to a family with Irish roots. She attended Tufts University in Massachusetts, where she received a degree in English. After graduation she married Eugene Robie and spent time in Virginia and West Virginia before moving to the historic town of Ipswich, Massachusetts, where the couple raised children and Robie was a school teacher. Robie’s interest in history led to years of service on the Ipswich Historical Commission, and a personal journey of genealogy that caught fire with the discovery of her ancestor’s diaries. The diaries formed the structure of two fascinating historical volumes, Dwelling Place of Dragons (2008) and the new Dueling Dragons (2018). Robie has discussed Irish history on national television in the U.S. and Ireland. She wrote the entry for James Harshaw in The Dictionary of Irish Biography, and had a weekly column on Irish history for the Newry Democrat in Northern Ireland. She is a sought-after speaker on Irish history, ancestral research, and the eternal clash of politics and religion.

Do you like to color? According to the Boston Globe, adult coloring books are flying off of the shelves. In a June 30, 2015 article, Dugan Arnett said, “In a sudden, unexpected, and generally curious development, grown-up versions of the doodle-books used by countless kindergartners have not only become a thing — but the thing, as far as millions of rapt Americans are concerned.”

See what all the excitement is for yourself at our monthly Adult Coloring program! We'll have a selection of coloring pages for you to choose from, along with markers, colored pencils and gel pens. Join us for a relaxing evening and color your cares away...

Author Michael Tougias - U-Boats So Close to Home
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

The Sharon Public Library Veteran's Club is hosting author Michael Tougias as he discusses his book: "U-Boats So Close to Home".  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Sharon Public Library.   All are welcome!  Refreshments.

~On May 19, 1942, a U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico stalked its prey fifty miles from New Orleans. Captained by twenty nine-year-old Iron Cross and King's Cross recipient Erich Wurdemann, the submarine set its sights on the freighter Heredia with sixty-two souls on board.

Most aboard were merchant seamen, but there were also a handful of civilians, including the Downs family: Ray and Ina, and their two children, eight-year-old Sonny and eleven-year-old Lucille. Fast asleep in their berths, the Downs family had no idea that two torpedoes were heading their way. When the ship exploded, chaos ensued--and each family member had to find their own path to survival.

Including original, unpublished material from Commander Wurdemann's war diary, the story provides balance and perspective by chronicling the daring mission of the U-boat--and its commander's decision-making--in the Gulf of Mexico.

An inspiring historical narrative, So Close to Home tells the story of the Downs family as they struggle against sharks, hypothermia, drowning, and dehydration in their effort to survive the aftermath of this deadly attack off the American coast.

Ask a Muslim Anything with Robert Azzi
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Speaker Robert Azzi will offer his informative and fascinating "Ask a Muslim Anything" program tonight at the library. Azzi seeks to engage with members of the community not as a scholar or academic, but as a neighbor, fellow citizen, and person of faith. He speaks about his life, what it is like to be Muslim in America, how he came to convert to Islam, about the religion of Islam and its history, and about the Middle East, terrorism, and the associated political and social issues surrounding these topics.

Nothing is off the table! Azzi is committed to addressing all questions and looks forward to these discussions, which celebrate our diversity and facilitate different people reaching out and talking to one another.

Robert Azzi is a photojournalist, columnist, and public speaker who lives in Exeter, NH. An Arab American Muslim, he writes on issues of identity, conflict, and Islam, particularly as they apply in the Middle East and the Global South. Born in New Hampshire, he has lived in Beirut, Cairo, Athens, Jeddah, and New York. Although he returned to the Granite State in the late 1980s, he continues to travel to visit and work in the Middle East.

Lunar Landing Smart Robots!, Ages 11+
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
This workshop aims to explain and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing. Students will learn basic concepts of robotics and, working in teams, they will learn coding to instruct a simple robot to move in construction challenges.

A big part of the workshop is hands-on practice using a Raspberry PI. The Pi programming environment allows you to do many things with a tiny credit-card-sized computer. The set-up is easy for beginners, challenging for experienced programmers, and fun for everyone! (1½ hour session, age 11 and above)

This program is brought to you with federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

10:30 AM - 11:15 AM

Come sing and learn with Ms. Marsha at the library!  Tot Time Sing n Learn is for toddlers nine months to three years old and their caregivers.  Each month we play, sing, complete simple crafts, and have stories loosely based around a theme.  We begin the session with a free play period that includes a variety of toys designed to engage your child.  Each family leaves with information and ideas to extend the learning to home.  This program offers parents the opportunity to meet other parents with children the same age.  Drop in.

Color Your Stress Away
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Do you like to color?  “In a sudden, unexpected, and generally curious development, grown-up versions of the doodle-books used by countless kindergartners have not only become a thing — but the thing, as far as millions of rapt Americans are concerned" said Dugan Arnett of The Boston Globe.

See what all the excitement is for yourself at our monthly Adult Coloring program! We'll have a selection of coloring pages for you to choose from, along with markers, colored pencils and gel pens. Join us for a relaxing evening and color your cares away...
