Curbside Delivery Block 1

Curbside Delivery Block 1

While the Sharon Public Library is now open for limited patron browsing, we are continuing to offer our curbside delivery service as an alternative way to pick up books. The service has been slightly modified for Phase 3. For the full FAQ on our Phase 3 curbside delivery, please see our longer Q&A here. A quick summary:

1) Place your holds online via the OCLN catalog, or by calling 781-784-1578. If you call the library, please be aware it may take a while for library staff to respond. Phone lines will be busy, and staff will be managing operations in the building simultaneously. We thank you in advance for your patience.
Don't know what to request? Use our Reader's Advisory form to request a library staff member place materials on hold for you based on your selected criteria.

2) Wait until you receive a notice that your materials are ready; then, select a block of time for curbside delivery at the library's Eventkeeper calendar. Unlike in Phase 2, you do not need to sign up for an individual time slot; instead, sign up for a block of time, and show up at any time within that time frame.

3) When you arrive during your designated block of time, please call 781-784-1578 x1420 to let us know you are at the library. Your materials will be brought to the Library Greeter at the door, who will then place them on the table for pickup. Please observe all social distancing requirements as you collect your materials; and make sure that you are taking the correct bag (with your name on it), as there may be more than one bag of materials on the table at times.

For all other questions, please refer to the SPL Curbside Delivery FAQ. And thank you in advance for helping to make curbside delivery safe for staff and patrons alike!

Curbside Delivery Block 1
10:30 AM - 2:00 PM

The Sharon Public Library is back with our biweekly Virtual Trivia Night!

Join us on Zoom and test your trivia mettle. Play solo, or with a team (virtually speaking!). For security purposes, participants' video will be disabled, so no need to worry about having a working webcam to play. The ability to view slides on a screen is all you need for fantastic trivia fun.

Please note: Trivia questions are geared toward adults in content and challenge rating.

This program will be offered via Zoom. If you're interested, please register by sending an email to Assistant Director Miki Wolfe at mwolfe@ocln.org. Registration is required (this extra step will add a layer of security for the event). You will be emailed a link to the meeting ahead of time. You should download Zoom, a free videoconferencing program, ahead of time.

[Virtual] Pineapple Project: A Play for Kids Exploring Gender, Ages 3-8
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Join us for an original play about gender, creativity, and each child's freedom to be who they are.The Pineapple Project was born during a moment of play between actor Mal Malme and Mal’s niece in which their niece said "Boys Can't be Princesses!" As a nonbinary person and theater artist, Mal couldn't ignore this statement. This led Mal, and colleagues Becca A. Lewis, and Renee Farster-Degenhardt to create a theatre piece for children ages 3-8 to broaden the gender conversation and validate each child's identity. The performance will be followed by a question & answer opportunity. Please register and you will be emailed the Zoom link prior to the program.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Sharon Public Library.

Virtual Crafternoons with Creativebug!
12:00 PM - 12:45 PM

Calling all crafters! Sharon Public Library will be hosting a Crafternoons series with selections from our new arts & crafts database, Creativebug! For each meeting, we'll highlight a craft from Creativebug. Participants can watch the video and complete the craft, and then we'll meet to discuss how it turned out, show off finished products, and socialize!

Today's craft: Watercolor Cards & DIY Envelopes (access the Creativebug classes: watercolor cards & envelopes)
"Learn how to make simple watercolor cards that you’ll enjoy making just as much as your friends and family will enjoy receiving. Courtney Cerruti demonstrates how to create elegant motifs using watercolor and simple brushstrokes or how to use a stencil to apply watercolor if you feel intimidated by the medium." Then, "Learn how to make customized paper envelopes with Courtney. With a few folds and a couple swipes of glue stick, you'll have a perfect envelope for birthdays, thank you cards, and holidays."

This series will run biweekly on Tuesdays at 12pm. Meetings will be hosted virtually on Zoom, a free videoconferencing program. For more details or to register, please email Information Services Librarian Hilary Umbreit at humbreit@ocln.org.

A Long Walk Down a Winding Road: Author Talk
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

Author Sam Farmer will discuss his book A Long Walk Down a Winding Road

Interwoven with real stories of personal triumphs, A Long Walk Down a Winding Road offers clear advice and simple steps for overcoming adversity and improving your life. Growing up, Sam Farmer contended with challenges many of us faceHe was bullied, faced difficulties around self-awareness and social skills, and struggled to build self-esteem. At the age of forty, he received a life-altering diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome. In spite of initial feelings of frustration and confusion, he learned to embrace his newfound “Aspie” profile, recognizing that doing so would ultimately pave the way toward acquiring self-love.

Farmer has written this book in order to share his ideas and insights learned along the winding road of his life. The stories and wisdom shared will inspire and empower everyone to help themselves achieve happier, more productive lives. By emphasizing the importance of a broader acceptance of autism and arguing why it should not be thought of as a disorder, Farmer illustrates how society can greatly benefit from showing an understanding of people who are different.

Author Tina Cassidy Speaker Program
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join the Sharon/Stoughton League of Women Voters and the Friends' of the Sharon Public Library as they sponsor author Tina Cassidy.   Ms. Cassidy will discuss her new book,  "Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait?: Alice Paul, Woodrow Wilson, and the Fight for the Right to Vote".

As described by her agent, Richard Abate, Journalist Tina Cassidy’s vivacious biography of militant activist Alice Paul, one of the undersung heroes of the American women’s suffrage movement and a key player in the adoption of the 19th Amendment, looks at her in the context of and in contrast to President Woodrow Wilson, whom Paul and her peers considered their primary antagonist. Cassidy highlights, with clear admiration, Paul’s energy, vision, and persistence, crediting her with pushing for methods of engagement that are still key to protestors today—marches, picketing at the White House, lobbying, silent protest, noncooperation with arresting officers, and hunger strikes. Her radical push for a constitutional amendment put her in conflict with others in the movement like Carrie Chapman Catt, who preferred a slow, state-by-state approach grounded in the willingness of men to accept the idea of women voting. The depiction of Wilson is conflicted, sympathizing with his stress and fatigue, but ultimately painting him as a failure and an unworthy opponent. Cassidy’s descriptions of the protests and marches led by Paul and her supporters are delightful, full of boisterous color and drama, and featuring the full texts of the wordy (and cheeky) banners used. This engaging history brings the suffrage struggle to life.
