Board Certified Music Therapist, (Berklee College of Music), Ben Pernick will talk about the beginnings of Music Therapy in the 1800s, originally used to help Veterans. Ben will treat us with examples used for music therapy and will play other military music to delight those in attendance.
Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional. In the mid-20th century, the profession of music therapy formally began after World War I and World War II when community musicians of all types went to Veterans hospitals around the country to play for the thousands of veterans suffering both physical and emotional trauma from the wars. The patients' notable physical and emotional responses to music led the doctors and nurses to request the hiring of musicians by the hospitals.
In years since, the field of Music Therapy has grown considerably, and has become a very popular and effective alternative therapy for various groups, including children on the autism spectrum, older adults with memory loss & dementia, traumatic brain injuries, and many other populations. Yet still, music therapy continues to be an excellent evidence-based non-pharmacological treatment for both active-duty military personnel and Veterans of all ages and backgrounds to address symptoms of PTSD, enable self-expression and improve overall quality of life.
