Hygge House Decorating Contest

Hygge is a Scandinavian concept, a feeling of coziness and comfort in the present moment, and is often used to cope with the boredom, bad weather, and early evenings associated with wintertime.

Given that winter is well underway in New Enland, we thought it might be fun for people to create their own Hygge spaces this winter, using supplies provided by the library. Once the hygge space is created, submit a picture to Assistant Director Miki Wolfe* to be entered in the Hygge House contest.

The rules are simple:

  • The Sharon Public Library will provide you with basic supplies to build a Hygge room.
  • You *must* use the randomly assigned pieces of furniture in your Hygge room. You can feel free to supplement with any additional materials to help you achieve hygge (you aren't required to use the associated scraps and papers we provide with the kits. Those are just for fun. You can use the box provided for your room, or use another box if you prefer.)
  • Register online to reserve a house kit, available for pickup on 1/25/21. *Supplies are limited. One kit per household, please*
  • Decorate your hygge room at home. Once it's complete, take a photo and email it to mwolfe@ocln.org by 2/20/21. Photos will be posted on our Facebook page & voting will occur between 2/22/21 & 2/27/21.
  • We respectfully ask that all voting be limited to Sharon residents, and immediate friends and family. Unusual voting patterns will be subject to review by Sharon Public Library staff.
  • Our winners will be announced on March 1, 2021.
  • Space & supplies are limited. One entry per household, please. This contest is appropriate for ages 8+.

*of course, if competition violates your sense of hygge, then feel free to just assemble the room, and take pride in your accomplishment instead :)

[CANCELED] Raising Money-Savvy Kids: Embracing Your Role as Chief Financial Parent
7:00 PM - 7:50 PM

* This event has been canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience. To receive materials related to this presentation, please email Hilary Umbreit at humbreit@ocln.org. *

Parents want to prepare their children for a lifetime of success, but money is a complex topic that can bring up a range of complicated feelings. This seminar explores strategies that parents can leverage to help their children establish a healthy relationship with money and make smart, informed decisions about their financial futures. Attendees will think through their own values about wealth, discuss approaches to get on the same page with their partners, consider how to talk with their children about money (rather than at them), and use their actions rather than their words to teach their children about money.

This event will be hosted on Zoom, a free web conference program. To register, please contact Information Services Librarian Hilary Umbreit at humbreit@ocln.org. Registration is required.

Featured Craft: Shamrock Suncatcher

For the months of January-March, Miss Allison will offer a limited number of grab 'n' go craft kits for kids ages 9-13 to take home.

Due to the overwhelming positive response from families asking for kits these last few months, the week-by-week email registration process will remain in place to allow all families a chance to participate.

2. Registration for the next week's craft will open every Monday. For example, you would email Miss Allison starting Monday, January 4th, to pick up a kit for week of January 11-16th.

3. You will receive an email response confirming your registration.

4.  Due to recent upticks in COVID cases, we recommend considering curbside pick-up service. You can sign up for a curbside time slot any time during the designated week and write "KIDCRAFT" in after your last name in the last name field of the curbside sign-up form. (If choosing to enter the library building for pick-up, please check our homepage to be mindful of browsing restrictions.)

The grab 'n' go kits include most of the supplies needed to complete the projects and instructions (sometimes including links to online and/or video instructions).

Participants are encouraged to share their finished crafts by sending photos to ariendeau@ocln.org or sharing on social media and tagging Sharon Public Library.

Grab n go kits are popular! If you email Miss Allison and there are no more kits available that week she will put you first on the list for the next week's craft. You be notified by email if this happens.

*Please note that Miss Allison makes every effort to provide awesome kits to as many kids/families as possible. Supplies are limited, so we ask that you limit your request to 1 kit per child.

Curbside Craft Club: Grab 'n' Go Kits (Ages 9-13) - For the Week of March 22nd Pick-up

Featured Craft: Upcycled Book Page Daisies

For the months of January-March, Miss Allison will offer a limited number of grab 'n' go craft kits for kids ages 9-13 to take home.

Due to the overwhelming positive response from families asking for kits these last few months, the week-by-week email registration process will remain in place to allow all families a chance to participate.

1. Kits are available through email registration only. To register, email Miss Allison at ariendeau@ocln.org with the number of kits you are requesting and the child/children’s name(s).

The Sharon Public Library is back with our biweekly Virtual Trivia Night!

Join us on Zoom and test your trivia mettle. Play solo, or with a team (virtually speaking!). For security purposes, participants' video will be disabled, so no need to worry about having a working webcam to play. The ability to view slides on a screen is all you need for fantastic trivia fun.

Please note: Trivia questions are geared toward adults in content and challenge rating.

This program will be offered via Zoom. If you're interested, please register by sending an email to Assistant Director Miki Wolfe at mwolfe@ocln.org. Registration is required (this extra step will add a layer of security for the event). You will be emailed a link to the meeting ahead of time. You should download Zoom, a free videoconferencing program, ahead of time.

Curbside Craft Club: Grab 'n' Go Kits (Ages 9-13) - For the Week of March 29th Pick-up

Featured Craft: TBA

For the months of January-March, Miss Allison will offer a limited number of grab 'n' go craft kits for kids ages 9-13 to take home.

Due to the overwhelming positive response from families asking for kits these last few months, the week-by-week email registration process will remain in place to allow all families a chance to participate.

1. Kits are available through email registration only. To register, email Miss Allison at ariendeau@ocln.org with the number of kits you are requesting and the child/children’s name(s).

[VIRTUAL] How to Photograph Like a Pro w/ Randall Warniers
6:30 PM - 7:50 PM

Why are professional photographers so good at what they do? Why do they get great shots when most of the rest of us take pictures that are less successful, and even bland and boring? The answer is surprisingly simple: The pro photographers understand a small number of important principles and techniques that make a huge difference in the quality of their images. This 1-hour talk by Randall Warniers will show examples of those principles and techniques so that each attendee, regardless of camera and experience, can use this knowledge to improve their photography and make images they are proud to show.

This class will be held on Zoom. Registration is required. To register, email humbreit@ocln.org or call 781-784-1578 x1422.
