Reading Glasses

Reading Glasses is our book group for adults in their 20s and 30s. Due to Thanksgiving, we have scheduled our “November” meeting for Thursday, December 2nd (on Zoom). We’ll be discussing “The Lost Apothecary” by Sarah Penner.

According to NPR’s Denny S. Bryce, the book is “an enthralling work of mystery, murder, trust, and betrayal. Set in an atmospheric London, Penner's immersive story flows skillfully from past to present, revealing the heartaches and lost dreams of three captivating main characters in a page-turningly tense drama that surprises right up until the final paragraph.”

New attendees please email splreference@cwmars.org (or jd’atri@cwmars.org) to be added to the notification list and receive a Zoom invite closer to the date.

Virtual - The History of Christmas

The event that is celebrated in Christian parts of the world has a very interesting history. Early Christians did not celebrate the birth of Christ. They believed that to do so was a form of pagan idolatry. The main celebration was at Easter to commemorate the death of Christ.

Ancient societies celebrated the winter equinox and its observance was deeply embedded in their pagan traditions. In Roman society there was an annual winter festival called Saturnalia. Northern European societies celebrated the equinox in a Yule festival.

Roman Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, in the 4th century. It was then necessary to have a Christian festival at that time of year to replace the pagan festival. What followed was an event to celebrate the birth of Christ that included many of the events associated with the pagan tradition. It is unlikely that the 25th December coincides with the actual birth of Jesus. The biblical descriptions of his birth point to a spring date.

From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was outlawed in Boston, and law-breakers were fined five shillings for breaking the law. Christmas was declared a federal holiday in the United States on June 26, 1870.

This virtual presentation by historian Sean Murphy will also include some information on the celebration of Christmas in Ireland and will incorporate recorded music and video to create a holiday friendly atmosphere.

Please register here.

Virtual - The History of Race and Politics in the Northeast

From Brooklyn to Boston, from World War II to the present, Jason Sokol traces the modern history of race and politics in the Northeast. Why did white fans come out to support Jackie Robinson as he broke baseball's color barrier in 1947 even as Brooklyn's blacks were shunted into segregated neighborhoods? How was African-American politician Ed Brooke of Massachusetts, who won a Senate seat in 1966, undone by the resistance to desegregation busing in Boston? Is the Northeast's history a microcosm of America as a whole: outwardly democratic, but inwardly conflicted over race?

This program is brought to you with federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Understanding Your Cat

Everyone loves a good cat video…but what if your cat isn’t acting quite as cute as the ones you see on the internet?  Are you tired of your cat thinking “outside the box" or living with a hardcore shredder? And I don’t mean snowboarding…  And when it comes to your multi-cat household – why can’t they all just get along?

Meet Dr. Rachel Geller, certified cat behaviorist.  She'll answer all of these questions and more, in her informative, fun presentation.
