She is sometimes considered to have been a founder of the United States and is now designated as the first Second Lady and second First Lady of The United States.
Adams’s life is one of the most documented of the first ladies: she is remembered for the many letters she wrote to her husband while he stayed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the Continental Congresses. John frequently sought the advice of Abigail on many matters, and their letters are filled with intellectual discussions on government and politics. In one of her more famous letters she implores her husband and his colleagues, all of whom were male, to, “…remember the ladies…If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.” Her letters also serve as eyewitness accounts of the American Revolutionary War home front.
This story starts off as an adult and goes back through her childhood and then back to an adult again. The show is appropriate for children and adults. Music & Sound design by Scooter Perrotta from LA Soundtrack.
Since 2003, Sheryl Faye has masterfully brought to life important historical women to both children and adults across the U.S. In her one-woman shows, she immerses the audience in a multimedia learning experience that captivates viewers and sparks their interest to explore more.

Join Miss Roxanne on the Shrewsbury Public Library Facebook Page for this early literacy music & movement program for preschoolers and their grownups to enjoy together. Enjoy songs, rhymes, chants, fingerplays and a flannel board using scarves, shaker eggs, and rhythm sticks. To make it even more interactive, have a look around your home before the event for something to use as a scarf (a washcloth or dishtowel?), something that makes a noise (rice in covered plastic container?), and two sticks to clack together (sticks or pencils or wooden spoons?).

Participants will create their own smaller version, choosing parts from Millet’s pastel painting that inspires them. All attendees will see why Vincent van Gogh was enamored with Millet's work and why Vincent did plant studies inspired by Millet. As always, all will keep their pastel paintings.

Prior to the Civil War era, no African American woman had earned a bachelor’s degree or been appointed to teach a class of white students. Fanny Jackson Coppin managed to do both. Born into slavery, she went on to become Oberlin College’s second Black female graduate, its first Black instructor, and a lifelong educator and activist. For over three decades, she served as principal of Philadelphia’s Institute for Colored Youth (now Cheyney University). This lecture explains how Coppin’s life shaped her teaching philosophy. From her own adversities and achievements, Coppin knew better than anyone that knowledge was power. As an educator, she dismissed disparities in students’ means, backgrounds, and preparation and began instead from the premise that every child has the ability to learn.
John Frederick Bell is an assistant professor of history at Assumption University in Worcester. Previously, he was a Spencer Dissertation Fellow at the National Academy of Education, a Kilachand Postdoctoral Fellow at Boston University, and a visiting lecturer at Brown University. He received his PhD in American Studies from Harvard. Prior to pursuing graduate study, he worked as an analyst at the National Archives and as a high school social studies teacher.
His research examines the intersecting histories of race, education, and social reform in nineteenth-century America. His forthcoming book, Degrees of Equality: Abolitionist Colleges and the Politics of Race, will be published by Louisiana State University Press.

After teaching music in public/charter schools for more than a quarter of a century, Harris launched Drum Away the Blues in 2009. Since then, he’s also presented programs on Indigenous music, America’s musical roots, Woodstock’s 50th anniversary, and rock and roll.
