Virtual Cookbook Book Group

Just because we can’t meet in person doesn’t mean the end of the Cookbook Book Group! We’ve planned an eclectic variety of programs designed to keep us cooking. We’ll chat with cookbook authors, local food purveyors and other foodies. We’ll learn, share ideas and maybe even find hidden culinary treasures. . .

First-time cookbook author Michelle McGrath will be joining us to talk about “The Creative Table: Inspired Recipes that Nourish, Gather and Unite.” Published in early November 2020, it was the # 1 cookbook in the New England category on Amazon in only ten days! She’ll share recipes and inspiration -- and how she happened to write a cookbook during a pandemic. Please register to get a Zoom invite!

Virtual - Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck

The Shrewsbury Public Library and Shrewsbury Media Connection invite you to a joint local broadcast and online streaming event featuring a screening of “Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck” and an exclusive Q&A session with two-time Emmy-nominated producer Andrew Giles Buckley.

This 90-minute film, a presentation of the series “Hit and Run History” by American Public Media, shares the story of Stephen Hopkins, the only Mayflower passenger who had been to North America prior to the famed journey in 1620. A decade earlier, Hopkins was aboard a Jamestown-bound ship that wrecked on Bermuda and provided inspiration for Shakespeare’s play, “The Tempest”. Shot on-location, the “Hit and Run History” crew retraces Hopkin’s life crisscrossing the Atlantic and examines stories that Hopkins may have been the model for the drunken, mutinous Stephano in Shakespeare’s play. Hit and Run History seeks out the reality of a man who was everywhere at the founding of America.

Reading Glasses Book Group

Join Reading Glasses - a casual and collaborative book group for adults in their 20s and 30s! Each month we take turns presenting our choices for our next read and we vote on a favorite. If you've ever dropped out of a book group because you didn't like the books being chosen, give us a try! We're more than just a book group, we're friends talking about books.

This month we're reading Stormy Weather by Florida Man Carl Hiaasen. "Hiaasen's latest madcap romp across southern Florida presents an apocalyptic panorama of the region in the wake of a storm much like Hurricane Andrew. Transforming a suburban sprawl into a lawless frontier, the hurricane puts on a collision course a demented cast of tourists, scam artists and eccentrics" (Publisher's Weekly).

Newcomers welcome! Email Annie Lee (aking@cwmars.org) for a Google Meet invite

This stereotype-defying virtual program celebrates the diverse sounds of Native America and introduces its greatest artists.

Craig Harris is a master percussionist, educator, historian, storyteller, photographer, host of a Friday night radio show (bluegrasscountry.org) and the author of Crossing Borders: My Journey in Music (written with Max Baca of the Grammy-winning Los Texmaniacs) (May 2020). He is also the author of Bluegrass, Newgrass, Old-time and Americana Music (2018), The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music (2014/2017), Heartbeat, Warble and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music (2016), and The New Folk Music (1993). Harris’ reviews, articles, and photographs have appeared in countless newspapers, magazines, and websites. Having played percussion for C.J. Chenier, Greg Brown, Jonathan Edwards, Rod MacDonald, Melanie, Merl Saunders, Rick Danko, and Los Texmaniacs, he is a member of Two Days Jeans and the Gaea Star Band (with whom he’s co-hosted the syndicated Gaea Crystal Radio Hour since 2014). After teaching music in public/charter schools for more than a quarter of a century, Harris launched Drum Away the Blues in 2009. Since then, he’s also presented programs on Indigenous music, America’s musical roots, Woodstock’s 50th anniversary, and rock and roll.

Virtual - Relieve Stress Through Meditation

When uncertainty surrounds us, there is a way to discover peace and stability within us through meditation. By focusing your attention within you can tap into an abundant source of peace and calm that can enhance clarity of thought, relieve stress, and improve physical, mental and emotional health.

Join Arvind Naik, long-time meditator, as he explores the extraordinary effect of meditation to reduce stress-related responses. Learn a simple method of meditation that you can use anytime, anywhere-- a great addition to your wellness. There will even be a chance to practice this time tested technique.

Arvind Naik, MBA in Global Business Management from NYIT, is educated as an Electronics Engineer and works as a Data Architect and Business Professional in Information Technology.

He has been giving lectures and workshops on the topic of meditation, where he discusses how incorporating meditation into our daily routine can be life changing. In his programs Arvind explores how this practice can help each of us develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Arvind led a meditation program at Target  and regularly speaks at libraries and community centers all across the country.  Most recently he spoke at Boston Scientific to introduce meditation as a tool for stress reduction in the workplace and he was invited by the Columbia Heights Police Department to give talks on the many benefits of meditation and how it can help the Officers with their day to day stress.  Arvind lives in Minnesota and is married with two sons.

Virtual - Borderland: The Life & Times of Blanche Ames Ames
Blanche Ames Ames (1878-1969) was an artist, an activist, a builder, an inventor, a birth control maverick, and a leader of the woman suffrage movement in Massachusetts. She was a woman of privilege who was not afraid to shock polite society. Her name doesn't appear in most American history books. This, too, is part of her story.

Borderland: The Life & Times of Blanche Ames Ames is a 55-minute documentary that chronicles the life of a woman who was born in the 19th century, worked to change the 20th century, and whose wisdom still resonates in the 21st century.

After the film, a Q&A will be hosted by Edmond Hands.

Edmund Hands is a local teacher of history with extensive experience in social studies curriculum mapping. He serves as a consultant for the Massachusetts Elementary School Principal’s Association for curriculum development. Author of Easton's Neighborhoods, Hands holds a B.A. in History from Bridgewater State and an M.A. in Latin American History from U. Mass Amherst. Hands is available for scholar led discussions at the high school level.
