Woody Strode’s 1950s transformation from football star to actor was the harbinger of hard-edged Western heroes later played by Jim Brown and Fred Williamson. Sidney Poitier’s Buck and the Preacher provided a narrative helmed by a groundbreaking African American director and offered unconventionally rich roles for women. Mask moves from these discussions to consider blaxploitation Westerns and an analysis of Jeff Kanew’s hard-to-find 1972 documentary about an all-Black rodeo. The book addresses how these movies set the stage for modern-day "Westploitation" films like Django Unchained.
A first-of-its kind survey, Black Rodeo illuminates the figure of the Black cowboy while examining the intersection of African American film history and the Western.
About Mia Mask:
Mia Mask is the Mary Riepma Ross endowed chair of Film at Vassar College. She received her Ph.D. from New York University. At Vassar she teaches African American cinema, documentary history, and genre courses. She is the author of Divas on Screen: Black Women in American Film, published by University of Illinois Press (2009). Professor Mask edited the anthology Contemporary Black American Cinema, published by Routledge (2012). In 2014, she published the jointly edited collection Poitier Revisited: Reconsidering a Black Icon in the Obama Age (Bloomsbury). She has written film reviews and covered festivals for IndieWire.com, The Village Voice, Film Quarterly, Time Out New York, The Poughkeepsie Journal and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her criticism was anthologized in Best American Movie Writing. Her cultural commentary has been featured on National Public Radio programs “Tell Me More,” “Marketplace” and “Morning Edition,” and in documentaries for the Smithsonian Channel, the Criterion Channel and CNN’s The Movies.

Join Ed Londergan, author of Unlike Any Other, a biographical novel about Bathsheba Spooner, for this talk about Spooner's life and times. Bathsheba Spooner was the daughter of Timothy Ruggles, a general in the French and Indian War, president of the Stamp Act Congress, Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, and a leading loyalist in Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War; the epitome of upper class. Like her father, Bathsheba was smart, strong-willed, and a staunch British loyalist. Forced to marry a man she did not love, Bathsheba withstood her husband’s abuse for years until a young Continental soldier entered her life. But when this well-heeled mother of three small children discovered she was pregnant with the soldier’s child, her thoughts quickly turned to murder.
Ed Londergan is the author of the award-winning books, The Devils’ Elbow and The Long Journey Home. Having researched American history for many years, he is a frequent speaker with a focus on colonial Massachusetts. A graduate of Holy Cross, he lives in Warren, Massachusetts. If you are a fan of classic literature and love a pint o' Guinness while you're reading, join us for this conversation with author and professor at Trinity College, Christopher Morash, as he discusses his book, Dublin: A Writer's City, which unfolds a book-lover's map of this unique city, inviting us to experience what it means to live in a great city of literature. Beyond the ever-present footsteps of James Joyce's characters, Leopold Bloom, or Stephen Dedalus, around the city centre, an ordinary-looking residential street overlooking Dublin Bay, for instance, presents the house where Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney lived for many years; a few blocks away is the house where another Nobel Laureate, W. B. Yeats, was born. Just down the coast is the pier linked to yet another, Samuel Beckett, from which we can see the Martello Tower that is the setting for the opening chapter of Ulysses. But these are only a few. The book is heavily illustrated and features custom maps.
Christopher Morash is the Seamus Heaney Professor of Irish Writing, a post dedicated to the teaching and research of Irish writing, based in the School of English. He has published histories of Irish theatre and of Irish media, both extending from the 17th century to the present; he has also published on Irish Famine writing, and, most recently, on theories of space in relation to theatre. He is currently working on Yeats's theatre. Learn more about Christopher here.

The 1849 murder of Dr. George Parkman in Boston stands as one of the most—if not the most—sensational trials of the 19th century. This case has it all: a grisly murder, a dismembered corpse, a wealthy victim, a respected suspect, a questionable lead witness for the prosecution, and unusual court proceedings. Nearly 60,000 spectators were ushered through the Boston courtroom in 10-minute intervals. An all-out media blitz ensued, with journalists traveling from Europe to Boston to cover the trial. Ultimately, the case spawned books, documentaries and even an iPhone app. The forensics of the case—one of the first trials to allow scientific evidence as testimony, and the first to allow dental evidence—will be explored along with a brief history of the “Spunkers” Club, a secret group of body snatchers at the Harvard Medical School. We are going to examine the lawyers, the judges, the problems with the case, and its oddities. Among the many fascinating elements to this story are: first, the number of Harvard men involved in the case; and second, the rapidly changing social climate during which the trial takes place. The trial is also legally historic. This case established the legal standard of “proof beyond a reasonable doubt,” a requirement that has since been adopted by just about every state in the nation. And it all started in Boston with this case.
Justice Dennis J. Curran (ret.) served as a Massachusetts trial judge for 15 years. He is a graduate of Boston Latin School, the University of Pennsylvania (B.A. and M.A.) and the University of Virginia School of Law. He has received four statewide awards for his deep commitment and belief in the justice system and dedication to the law.

Have you ever wondered who picked your Fairtrade banana? Or why we can buy British strawberries in April? How far do you think your green beans travelled to get to your plate? And where do all the wonky carrots go? Above all, how do we stop worrying about our food choices and start making decisions that make a difference? In an effort to make sense of the complex food system we are all part of, Louise Gray decides to track the stories of our five-a-day, from farm to fruit bowl, and discover the impact that growing fruits and vegetables has on the planet. Join us for this very important discussion as we celebrate Earth Day 2023!
About Avocado Anxiety: Through visits to farms, interviews with scientists and trying to grow her own, Louise Gray digs up the dirt behind organic potatoes, greenhouse tomatoes, and a glut of courgettes. In each chapter, Louise answers a question about a familiar item in our shopping basket. Is plant protein as good as meat? Is foraged food more nutritious? Could bees be the answer to using fewer chemicals? How do we save genetic diversity in our apples? Are digital apps the key to reducing food waste? Is gardening good for mental health? And is the symbol of clean eating, the avocado, fuelling the climate crisis?
Louise Gray is a freelance writer who has worked for The Daily Telegraph, the BBC, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Country Life, The Spectator and Scottish Field. She has a deep knowledge of environmental issues and has chaired a number of debatesand spoken at public events. She wrote The Ethical Carnivore, which discusses the ethics of meat by only eating animals she has killed herself. It was shortlisted in the Fortnum and Mason Food Awards and won two awards at The Guild of Food Writers Awards, Best Food Book 2017 and Best Investigative Work.
