Kindness continues to rock in October at Seekonk Library. Children and families may stop by the Library throughout October to pick up a package of rocks that can be painted with simple messages of kindness or love. Rocks may then be left in the Kindness Rocks Garden at Seekonk Library, given to someone you know, or placed in a visible location in Seekonk to spread the idea of kindness throughout town.
Each rock will have a base color of paint so that messages will be easier to read. The latest supply of rocks will have a base coat in shades of fall colors. Seekonk Library will supply the rocks but paints or permanent markers are not provided.
This program is open to everyone, even those who have previously received rocks from the Library. Great intergenerational and family activity.
Registration is not required, simply stop into the library to pick up one or more packages of rocks. Curbside pick up may also be arranged.
The need for kindness is great and communities across the world are making a difference! Just stop by to pick up your rocks.
National Library Card Sign-Up Month continues!
To encourage reading throughout the year, Seekonk Library is making it easy for every Seekonk student to get their own SAILS Library Card. (And all adults are invited to get a SAILS library card, too!)
The benefits of having a SAILS library card for children are many including:
-curriculum support for the current school year
-borrowing books for school assignments and for leisure reading
-borrowing ebooks, movies, music, magazines, digital cameras and even ukuleles, all for free.
-access to online services like Tumblebooks, a collection of online, animated talking books and videos for children
-ability to sign up for children's programming including virtual events such as Virtual Owl Prowl, Make Your Own Video Game and Life Skills: Cooking!
A Library card also provides access to more than 60 additional libraries in the SAILS network and even more libraries state-wide. A library card is free to get, free to use.
If your child doesn’t already have a Seekonk Public Library card, simply complete the SAILS library card application form and bring it to Seekonk Library to receive the card as well as a free book bag, lanyard and special (large!) sticker.
Seekonk Public Library is a great community resource and is available to one and all. We hope you take advantage of this terrific opportunity to get a library card for your child (or for yourself!)
Not sure if your child already has a SAILS card? Call the Customer Services desk at (508) 336-8230.
In celebration of Free Comic Book Days, stop by the children's room anytime on or after October 2 and select two free Halloween themed comic books to take home and keep. Available as supplies last.
Last summer, Massachusetts children were asked what their favorite books are. From the hundreds of responses, the list was narrowed down to 52 "candidate books" that kids can now vote for as their favorite. The ballot will also have an option for kids to write in and vote for a title that is not listed.
The voting site is KidsVoteForBooks.com and it will go live on Monday, October 26. Voting will continue through Monday, November 9 with the top 25 books announced on November 12.
Kids, Make Your Vote Count and vote for your favorite book!

Join parents throughout the community as they read to their young children as part of the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program.
Who: the program is designed for infants, toddlers and preschoolers
What: a self-paced program that encourages reading to young children before they start kindergarten
Why: The goal of 1,000 Books is to strengthen children’s vocabulary and language skills while promoting the habit of reading. Increased vocabulary and language skills are important tools for children to have as they begin to learn to read in kindergarten
How: To start the program, please register here then start writing down the titles or number of books you read to your child. Keep track of the books being read by using a '1,000 Books' reading log, a piece of paper, or by using the '1,000 Books Before Kindergarten' app. If you do not have a SAILS Libray card to register for the program, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tip: If you read a book multiple times, you may write the title down every time you read the book. Why? Because the program isn’t about individual titles; it’s about the habit reading, plus children learn by repetition so reading a book many times is actually quite beneficial for kids!
To achieve the goal of reading 1,000 books, read regularly and receive reading incentives throughout the program. You’ll reach the goal before you know it!
Details about the program's reading incentives, awards and reading logs are available here
Set your own pace and see how it adds up…
– read 1 book a day and the program is completed in 3 years
– read 3 books a day and the program is completed in 1 year
The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read it and Reap!
