1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Join parents throughout the community as they read to their young children as part of the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program.

Who: the program is designed for infants, toddlers and preschoolers

What: a self-paced program that encourages reading to young children before they start kindergarten

Why: The goal of 1,000 Books is to strengthen children’s vocabulary and language skills while promoting the habit of reading. Increased vocabulary and language skills are important tools for children to have as they begin to learn to read in kindergarten

How: To start the program while the library building is closed, please register here then start writing down the titles or number of books you read to your child. Keep track of the books being read by using a '1,000 Books' reading log, a piece of paper, or by using the '1,000 Books Before Kindergarten' app. If you do not have a SAILS Libray card to register for the program, please contact us at childrens@seekonkpl.org.

Tip: If you read a book multiple times, you may write the title down every time you read the book. Why? Because the program isn’t about individual titles; it’s about the habit reading, plus children learn by repetition so reading a book many times is actually quite beneficial for kids!

To achieve the goal of reading 1,000 books, read regularly and receive reading incentives throughout the program. You’ll reach the goal before you know it!

Details about the program's reading incentives, awards and reading logs are available here

Set your own pace and see how it adds up…
– read 1 book a day and the program is completed in 3 years
– read 3 books a day and the program is completed in 1 year

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read it and Reap!

Join Rhonda Matson, Director of South Coast Music Together, for a taped, musical singalong program. This interactive, music experience engages the whole family in musical play with a story book mixed in. New videos will be posted each Wednesday for 6 weeks. A link to each video will be provided below.

Some weeks you will want to have a "found in the kitchen" instrument ready (Tip: in a pinch, a box of mac & cheese makes a great musical shaker!)
Other weeks you may want to have a hand towel or cloth napkin close by to dance with and to use while waving to the music.
And for every week, be sure to have someone or something nearby to snuggle and cuddle with!

Everyone is invited to download the free, Music Together® Hello Everybody app, to learn some of the songs and see digital copies of the storybooks used.
Please note that the app is not necessary to participate in the program.

Whether you've attended Rhonda's music classes at Seekonk Library before or if you're simply looking for an immersive musical experience for your child, join us as we SingAlong with Rhonda.

New!! May 27: Vehicles

May 20: Birds

May 13: In the Kitchen!

May 6: moon theme
