Books & Brew Discussion Group - ONLINE
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Join a lively discussion with other book lovers, and enjoy your favorite brew too. Books & Brew meets on the first Wednesday of each month, Ages 18+, either via Zoom or in-person at Nathan Bill's Restaurant. This month's selection is The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. February's meeting will be on Zoom - join us at this link.

In her twenties, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. Pierpont Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture on the New York society scene and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps build a world-class collection. But Belle has a secret: she was born Belle Marion Greener, daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard. Belle's Portuguese heritage lets her pass as white, but she will go through great lengths to preserve her carefully crafted identity in a racist world.

Copies of the book will be available at the East Forest Park and Forest Park Branch Libraries, and most often are available via Hoopla with a Springfield City Library library card too. If Hoopla is new to you, check out this tutorial

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Join a lively discussion with other book lovers, and enjoy your favorite brew too. Books & Brew meets either online via Zoom or in person on the first Wednesday of each month, Ages 18+, at Nathan Bill's Restaurant in Springfield.

This month's selection is  All that she carried : the journey of Ashley's sack, a black family keepsake by Tiya Miles. Sitting in the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture is a rough cotton bag, called "Ashley's Sack," embroidered with just a handful of words that evoke a sweeping family story of loss and of love passed down through generations.

Books & Brew meets in person on the first Wednesday of each month, Ages 18+, at Nathan Bill's Restaurant in Springfield.

This month's selection is  The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Richardson. Cussy Mary Carter is the last of her kind, her skin the color of a blue damselfly in these dusty hills. But that doesn't mean she's got nothing to offer. As a member of the Pack Horse Library Project, Cussy delivers books to the hill folk of Troublesome, hoping to spread learning in these desperate times. But not everyone is so keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and the hardscrabble Kentuckians are quick to blame a Blue for any trouble in their small town. The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman's determination to bring a little bit of hope to the darkly hollers

Copies of the book will be available at the East Forest Park and Forest Park Branch Libraries, and most often are available via Hoopla with a Springfield City Library library card too. If Hoopla is new to you, check out this tutorial
