Great Decisions: the End of Globalization?
Great Decisions (virtual): The End of Globalization?
Elle Van Dermark, Associate Professor of History & Political Science at Asnuntuck Community College, will be the group facilitator for this series.
This month's topic is The end of globalization?
As the United States enters another election season, the merits and drawbacks of globalization are again being debated by the presidential candidates. With the passing of the Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s America First doctrine, protectionist policies have become more prevalent, challenging globalization. What is globalization and how will it be affected by protectionist trade policies? How will the United States and the world be affected by such policies? Is globalization really at an end, or in need of a refresh?

Please Note: you only need to register once for the whole discussion series!

Great Decisions Briefing Books are $30.  To purchase, please mail a check, made out to the Richard Salter Storrs Library, to the address below:

Organize Your Practical Pantry

Flyer for Organize Your Practical PantryA practical pantry doesn’t have to be Pinterest-pretty with dry goods decanted into jars with artful labels. It's more than just a place to store food; it’s a space that can support your goals – from eating healthier, creating a snack station for kids, or stocking up on supplies without losing control of where everything is.

Storrs Library invites you to join us with professional organizer Susan McCarthy to listen, learn, and enjoy or to set up your device near your pantry to go through the process during the program. We’ll use a minimal mess method so if you don't finish, you won’t be stuck with the contents of your pantry strewn over the floor. No need to buy organizing products before class; you’ll see what, if anything, you need after you go through your pantry. Have a box available for donations, a trash can nearby, and cleaning supplies on hand.

Susan McCarthy realized she was a minimalist midlife while going through her parents' house packed full of stuff. She founded A Life Less Cluttered to help others develop peaceful decluttered spaces in their homes. Susan is a certified member of NAPO, National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals.

This program is sponsored by Friends of Storrs Library.

Tea: The First Wicked Weed

Flyer for Tea: The First Wicked WeedJoin Storrs Library as historian Dory Codington explores the material culture shifts leading up to the American Revolution.

In December 1767, the Town Meeting of Harvard, Massachusetts voted to discourage the sale and purchase of items as varied as tea, carriages, and ready-made clothing. Material culture had increasingly made women’s lives easier, and so the rejection of it shows us that consumers were willing to separate themselves from Britain. Much of the rhetoric at the beginning of this path toward the Revolution centered on tea, that "wicked weed."

Dory Codington is a local historian and novelist. As a Freedom Trail and Faneuil Hall Guide, for the National Park Service, she began to investigate the social changes that were necessary to embrace the higher notion of Independence and America’s break from Great Britain. She has three novels set during this time period: Cardinal Points, Beside Turning Water and Fate and Fair Winds.

The Durability of a Kennedy: JFK at War, 1937-1945

Flyer for “The Durability of a Kennedy": JFK at War, 1937-1945Celebrate President John F. Kennedy's birthday with Storrs Library and Longmeadow Historical Society as we host a presentation by historian Philip Goduti.

Before he was President of the United States, John F. Kennedy had a coming of age journey. He toured Europe on the brink of war in 1937, served in the Pacific campaign suffering “grievous wounds,” as he wrote later, that followed him for rest of his life. In 1943,  hereported on the United Nations peace effort in San Francisco, and witnessed the destructive nature of war as he walked among the battle torn cities and countryside of Europe in 1945.  This talk will explore JFK’s experiences before his time in public office, examining letters, diaries, and newspaper articles that he wrote during this coming of age period in an effort to delve deeper into how those events shaped him as a leader.

Philip A. Goduti, Jr. is a teacher, professor, historian, and author.  He has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of History at Quinnipiac University and a full-time history teacher at Somers High School in Somers, CT for the past twenty years. Goduti is pursuing his PhD in United States History at the University of Connecticut with a focus on civil rights and foreign policy post 1945.   His dissertation is examining how emotion shaped John F. Kennedy’s decision making as President of the United States.

Goduti has published books and articles examining the history of civil rights and United States foreign policy in the 1950s and 1960s. In addition to his books, he has published reviews in the American Historical Review, Journal of Cold War Studies, and The Historian and has contributed to Oxford University Press: American National Biography Online series.  Goduti contributed to Kennedy: His Life and Legacy (2013) with an article titled “The Young President.” As a freelance writer he wrote for the Providence Journal-Bulletin, Middletown Press, and Hamden Chronicle.

This program is cosponsored by Longmeadow Historical Society and Friends of Storrs Library.

This Business of Fighting: A Human Face on World War II

Flyer for This Business of Fighting: A Human Face on World War IIA few years ago, Arnie Pritchard inherited the World War II army footlocker of his father, Anton (Tony) Pritchard.  It turned out to contain hundreds of letters and other family papers from Tony’s service in the Army and in the United Nations’ refugee program in postwar Europe.

From these letters Arnie has created a story. “This Business of Fighting” focuses on Tony’s time in the front lines in Europe. It portrays a young man dealing with everything from raw fear to his role as a leader to his exposure to a world both wider and more brutal than he had known.  Tony wonders how he will respond to his first combat, describes crawling through the freezing woods of the Ardennes under enemy fire, and sees crowds of escaping forced laborers wandering the roads of Germany as the Nazi regime was collapsing.

Arnie Pritchard has a Ph.D. in history from Yale, and has been telling stories in public for about twenty years.  He lives in New Haven, Connecticut.

We will be using Zoom for this presentation. You will need a computer, smartphone, iPad, or similar device that has a camera and audio ability.

Turner held gatherings of young Black Americans at Mrs. Atkins house, inviting them up from the South to find opportunities in the New England.
