Rise to the Challenge Book Discussion

Banned Book Discussion

Once a Month  Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

Read and discuss books that have been challenged and/or banned

"The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls facilitated by Anna Cierocki, KML Program Services and Outreach Coordinator

A tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that, despite its profound flaws, gave the author the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to a dismal West Virginia mining town and total dysfunction.

B.J. Smith Returns to Discuss NO GRAVES AS YET....

NO GRAVES AS YET BY ANNE PERRY

Books will be available at the library.

B.J. Smith's book discussions are so engaging, you won't want to miss this book discussion.

No Graves as Yet is the first book in a 5-part series in case you like the book so much you want to continue the series.  This New York Times bestselling author sweeps us into the golden summer of 1914, a time of brief enchantment when English men and women basked in the security of wealth and power, even as the last weeks of their privileged world were swiftly passing. Theirs was a peace that led to war.  .Anne Perry is a sublime master of suspense. In No Graves As Yet, her latest haunting masterpiece, she reminds us that love and hate, cowardice and courage, good and evil are always a part of life, in our own time as well as on the eve of the greatest war the world has ever known.

Suffield Garden Club: Then & Now: The Importance and Relevance of Frederick Law Olmsted

Then & Now: The Importance and Relevance of Frederick Law Olmsted

Leslie Martino, landscape designer and historian will help us celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted, considered the father of American landscape architecture.

Olmsted’s designs provided an opportunity for people to interact with nature as well as other people. He understood the impact a designed green space had on people’s social, mental, and physical health when he began designing public parks.

Explore the relevancy of his design principles and our interest in public green spaces by looking at Olmsted parks, their current issues, the newest trends in public green spaces and their role in our lives.

Suffield resident George Hendee was a client of Olmsted’s firm from 1928-1929.

This event is co-sponsored by the Suffield Garden Club, Friends of the Farm at Hilltop and the Trees for Suffield Initiative.

Registration is required.
