Teens @ The Library: Nutmeg Book Club

Thursday, October 17th at 3:30 pm

Join us for the next meeting of the KML Teen's Book Club! We'll be discussing "Moongarden" by Michelle A. Barry

Books will be available to check out at the library. Open to all people in grades 6-12. Registration is not required.

Moongarden
by Michelle A. Barry

Centuries ago, Earth’s plants turned deadly, and humanity took to space to cultivate new homes.

Myra Hodger is in her first year at an elite school on the Moon, and she’s crumbling under the pressure.

She doesn’t fit in and, worse, the tattoos that signal her Number Whisperer magic aren’t developing.

In her heart, she knows she doesn’t have a Creer, and soon everyone else will, too.

Wandering the halls while cutting class, she discovers a secret lab hidden behind one of the unused classrooms and, beyond that, a secret garden overflowing with plants.

Dangerous toxic plants.

As she learns more about the garden, Myra begins to wonder if she does have a Creer after all—one that died out when the Earth did.

One that could help solve the food shortages the government doesn’t want anyone to know about.

Rise to the Challenge Book Discussion

A book group for adults to read and discuss books that have been challenged and/or banned. Copies of the book will be available at the library. Facilitated by Librarian Anna Cierocki. Registration is not required.

Please be aware that this group discusses books which may include sensitive topics.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Far in the future, the World Controllers have created the ideal society. Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs, all its members are happy consumers. Bernard Marx seems alone in feeling discontent. Harbouring an unnatural desire for solitude, and a perverse distaste for the pleasure of compulsory promiscuity, Bernard has an ill-defined longing to break free. A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations, where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress.…

Suffield Garden Club Presents: Naturescaping Your Yard

January 6, 2025 1:00 pm

“Naturescaping Your Yard” with Karen Bussolini

Karen Bussolini is a lifelong organic gardener and lover of nature. She had a long career as a garden photographer, speaker and writer before establishing a practice as an eco-friendly garden coach.

Naturescaping is landscaping with nature – attracting and sustaining wildlife, using native and well-adapted plants, using resources wisely, and avoiding environmental pollution. But it also means landscaping like nature. Nobody plants, waters or fertilizes the forest or the prairie, yet they survive beautifully on their own. Naturescaping, also called Ecological landscaping, creates self-sustaining (low-maintenance) landscapes that function like nature.

Everything comes from somewhere, everything goes somewhere and it’s all connected. Karen will present big-picture ecological thinking, nitty-gritty how-to tips along with images of sustainable yards and gardens that serve the needs of the people who use them, look attractive and function as small ecosystems.

Registration is required.

Lush by Natasha Friend

Natasha Friend's novel about a girl whose father is an alcoholic and how she and her family learn to deal with his condition. It's hard to be a 13-year-old girl. But it's even harder when your father's a drunk. It adds an extra layer to everything — your family's reactions to things, the people you're willing to bring home, the way you see yourself and the world. For Samantha, it's something that's been going on for so long that she's almost used to it. Only, you never get used to it. Especially when it starts to get worse...

Suffield Garden Club Presents: It's a Bird, It's a Plane - No, It's an Eagle!

March 3, 2025  6:30 pm

“It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane – No, It’s an Eagle!” with Ginny Apple, CT Master Wildlife Conservationist

Ginny Apple is a Master Wildlife Conservationist with the State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, for which she gives almost 100 talks yearly and volunteers monitoring the local bear population.

Bald eagles were once so endangered that many considered whether to replace them as America’s national symbol. The ongoing story of their recovery as a species and CT’s healthy eagle population is a comeback story worth hearing.

Join us for a talk about these magnificent birds of prey that so fascinate onlookers, and their valuable contributions to our ecosystem. Ginny’s talk on the bald eagle and its resurging population in Connecticut will be accompanied by a slideshow presentation.
