This month's title is Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom by Ilyon Woo.
In the years before the American Civil War, the abolitionist movement thrived on narratives of self-emancipated people, who could recount from their own experience the physical and emotional tolls of slavery and the risks they took to flee from it. Here, Woo (The Great Divorce) recounts the lives of one such enslaved couple, little remembered today despite publishing their narrative in 1860. William and Ellen Craft escaped slavery by disguising the fair-skinned Ellen as a wealthy white man traveling with William as her enslaved attendant. Both skilled craftspeople, the Crafts hoped to make a home in Boston, where they connected with abolitionist activists and shared their story with enraptured audiences. Ellen’s former enslaver, determined to pursue the couple, eventually forced the Crafts to immigrate to the United Kingdom, where they found work as lecturers and teachers. At every step of their journey, they were sustained by bravery, determination, and their firm love for each other. Never losing sight of slavery’s quotidian horrors, this book tells a quintessentially American story of Black love, courage, and agency.
Book club books will be available for pick up at the circulation desk about one month before the discussion date and are due back on the night of the discussion. This title is also available on OverDrive as an ebook and eaudio.
All readers are always welcome.

Whiteout by Ken Follette:
A missing canister of a deadly virus. A lab technician bleeding from the eyes. Toni Gallo, the security director of a Scottish medical research firm, knows she has problems, but she has no idea of the nightmare to come.
As a Christmas Eve blizzard whips out of the north, several people, Toni among them, converge on a remote family house. All have something to gain or lose from the drug developed to fight the virus. As the storm worsens, the emotional sparks—jealousies, distrust, sexual attraction, rivalries—crackle; desperate secrets are revealed; hidden traitors and unexpected heroes emerge. Filled with startling twists at every turn, Whiteout rockets Follett into a class by himself.
"Everyone likes a page-turner, and Follett is the best." —The Philadelphia Inquirer
"A hell of a storyteller" (Entertainment Weekly), #1 New York Times bestselling author Ken Follett reinvents the thriller with each new novel. But nothing matches the intricate knife-edge drama of Whiteout. . . .
All readers are always welcome!
