Abstract Tape Resist Painting

Join us in welcoming Gariné, an artist and potter, who runs pottery studio Kulina Folk Art.

She will be teaching this abstract tape resist painting program. Tape resist art is all about color, originality and celebrating negative space. The ease of this technique allows for lots of expressive freedom while no special skills are required, making it popular with everyone.

During the workshop the participants will use tape and acrylics on stretched canvas to create an abstract, angular painting without the use of brushes. We will also discuss negative space, experiment with design elements, start with a limited palette and blend an endless array of colors to get the desired effect. The work will have to be left at the venue to dry overnight. After the canvas is completely dry, the tape can be removed and the painting will be ready for display. The stretched canvas is 10” x 10”.

**We will be using acrylic paints so bring an old shirt to protect your clothing.**

Registration is Required! Open to Teens and Adults!

Nonfiction Book Club

This month's title is Shut Out: A Story Of Race And Baseball In Boston by Howard Bryan.

"Sport is not always a metaphor . . . but in this instance the story of race and the Red Sox is an exceedingly accurate mirror of the story of race and Boston, and thus race and America." — Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post

Shut Out is the compelling story of Boston's racial divide viewed through the lens of one of the city's greatest institutions - its baseball team, and told from the perspective of Boston native and noted sports writer Howard Bryant.

This well written and poignant work contains striking interviews in which blacks who played for the Red Sox speak for the first time about their experiences in Boston, as well as groundbreaking chapter that details Jackie Robinson's ill-fated tryout with the Boston Red Sox and the humiliation that followed.

Book club books will be available for pick up at the circulation desk about one month before the discussion date and are due back on the night of the discussion.

All readers are always welcome.

Buy Night, Forgotten Book Online at Low Prices in India | Night, Forgotten Reviews & Ratings - Amazon.inNight Forgotten by Meghan Joyce Tozer

Before . . .
Life is idyllic for Julie Porter and her husband Owen. They’ve bought their dream house in the Berkshires; their careers are on the upswing; and they have the world at their fingertips. They’ve never been so in love. They’ve never been happier. The only thing that’s missing is a baby--but Julie’s got a plan, and they’re right on schedule.

Until Owen falls ill with food poisoning, leaving Julie to attend a neighborhood holiday party alone. When she wakes up, half-naked in her neighbor’s bathtub, Julie doesn’t know how to tell Owen, the police, her friends--anyone--that she has been sexually assaulted. So she keeps it secret until she realizes that she’s pregnant with her assailant’s baby.

After . . .
Life is unmanageable for Julie. She can’t function in the world with a newborn, and she’s unable to be present for her husband, her family, her friends. Desperate to solve the mystery of what happened to her, Julie’s driven to more and more erratic behaviour, until the truth about that night is revealed. Afterward, no one will be the same ever again. Not Owen. Not the baby. And especially not Julie.

Book club books are available at the Circulation Desk on the Main Level about a month before the meeting and are due back on the evening of the discussion.

All readers are always welcome!

Genealogy Club

Are you interested in tracing your family's history?  Are you working on your genealogy and want to meet up with others who are working on their family trees?  Then join us at the Thayer Public Library's Genealogy Club.  All are welcome from novice to expert. Come learn about the resources that the library has to offer. We can compare notes and stories as well as help each other with research.

Welcome to the Graveyard -- Braintree Cemeteries, with The Gravestone Girls

This presentation is about New England cemetery art, history and symbolism and what you can find in Braintree cemeteries! The Girls will hit the road and go through the Braintree’s cemeteries, taking pictures to show us some hidden gems.  They hope to  teach us what’s in the backyards and main streets of our town.  They hope to inspire us to go out and explore on our own; which might lead to graveyard clean ups, documentation projects and other fun and educational cemetery experiences!

Registration is requested, but not required.  Register to be on the Genealogy Club email list to learn about genealogy webinars and special events throughout the year.

Brown Bag Book Club

This month's selection is Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker. The Brown Bag Book Club meeting will be held in Logan Auditorium, 12-1 PM on Wednesday, May 8th. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month. Registration required.  Visitors and new members are always welcome!

Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family by Robert Kolker (NF)

Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their twelve children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony—and they worked hard to play their parts. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the ten Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic. How could all this happen to one family?

PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction Nominee for Shortlist, Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Nonfiction

Copies of the print edition in regular and large print, as well as audiobook on CD, will be available at the library's Circulation Desk one month ahead of the meeting.

Please email Christina at ccastle@braintreema.gov if you are having trouble borrowing a copy of the book.

Second Thursday Book Club

This month's discussion book is An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor.

Amazon.com: The Little Paris Bookshop eBook : George, Nina, Pare, Simon: Kindle Store Barry Laverty, M.B., can barely find the Northern Ireland village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there. But Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice.

At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly.

The older physician has his own way of doing things. At first, Barry can't decide if the pugnacious O'Reilly is the biggest charlatan he has ever met or the best teacher he could ever hope for. Through O'Reilly, Barry soon gets to know all of the village's colourful and endearing residents and a host of other eccentric characters who make every day an education for the inexperienced young doctor.

Ballybucklebo is a long way from Belfast, and Barry is quick to discover that he still has a lot to learn about country life. But with pluck and compassion, and only the slightest touch of blarney, he will find out more about life--and love--than he ever imagined back in medical school.

Book club books are available for pick up at the circulation desk about one month before the discussion date and are due back on the night of the discussion.

All readers are always welcome!
