Nonfiction Book Club

This month's title is American Sirens: The Incredible Story of the Black Men Who Became America's First Paramedics by Kevin Hazzard.

The extraordinary story of an unjustly forgotten group of Black men in Pittsburgh who became the first paramedics in America, saving lives and changing the course of emergency medicine around the world.

Until the 1970s, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. A 9-1-1 call might bring police or even the local funeral home. But that all changed with Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America's first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their story and their legacy erased--until now.

In American Sirens, acclaimed journalist and paramedic Kevin Hazzard tells the dramatic story of how a group of young, undereducated Black men forged a new frontier of healthcare. He follows a rich cast of characters that includes John Moon, an orphan who found his calling as a paramedic; Peter Safar, the Nobel Prize-nominated physician who invented CPR and realized his vision for a trained ambulance service; and Nancy Caroline, the idealistic young doctor who turned a scrappy team into an international leader. At every turn, Freedom House battled racism--from the community, the police, and the government. Their job was grueling, the rules made up as they went along, their mandate nearly impossible--and yet despite the long odds and fierce opposition, they succeeded spectacularly. Never-before revealed in full, this is a rich and troubling hidden history of the Black origins of America's paramedics, a special band of dedicated essential workers, who stand ready to serve day and night on the line between life and death for every one of us.

Book club books will be available for pick up at the circulation desk about one month before the discussion date and are due back on the night of the discussion.

All readers are always welcome.

                                                                                      Horse by Geraldine Brooks

Horse by Geraldine Brooks book review - The Washington PostKentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance.

Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse—one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success.

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington,
Horse is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.

Book club books are available at the Circulation Desk on the Main Level about a month before the meeting and are due back on the evening of the discussion.

Boston Marathon Traditions and Lore

Cover of The Boston Marathon (Images of Modern America)The 128th Boston Marathon will be run this year! Join bestselling author Paul Clerici on Tuesday, March 12, at 7 pm, as he shares stories from the traditions and lore surrounding the iconic Boston Marathon.

Paul Clerici has written extensively on the race in the “Boston Marathon History by the Mile,” “Images of Modern America: The Boston Marathon,” and the newly released “Boston Marathon Traditions and Lore”. He supplements his storytelling with a multimedia presentation of images, which include some from rare collections, and some never seen before.

He will describe and illustrate such traditions as the connection between the Greek god Zeus, the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, and the gold-dipped olive-branch wreaths each champion receives; the growth of the start and finish lines from its simple origins as a single line to its lavish colorful artistry; the unique athlete and culture exchange program with the Ohme-Hochi 30K in Japan that began with four-time Boston Marathon winner Bill Rodgers in the 1970s; statues and monuments along the course, including one of runner-sculptor Bobbi Gibb, the first woman to finish the Boston Marathon and who created the life-size statue herself; the ever-changing beauty of the finisher medal; the evolution of media coverage; the athlete villages -- one of which began in 1996 to accommodate its largest field of 38,000 for its centennial -- and much more.

Paul Clerici's combined experience and knowledge as a runner (competing in nearly every distance from the mile to the marathon, including 2 triathlons and 43 marathons, among them the Boston Marathon 23 times), journalist and writer (covering the sport of running for over 35 years for a variety of media outlets) is reflected in his popular books and talks. Books will be available to purchase and can be signed by the author. No purchase is necessary to attend this free program.

Held in Logan Auditorium on the Upper Level, accessible by elevator from the Parking Lot Entrance at the rear of the building, this program is made possible through State Aid funding.

Brown Bag Book Club

This month's selection is Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult. The Brown Bag Book Club meeting will be held in Logan Auditorium, 12-1 PM on Wednesday, March 13th. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month. Registration required.  Visitors and new members are always welcome!

Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult

Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising a beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in, and taking over her father's beekeeping business.

Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can she trust him completely . . .

Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.

Copies of the print edition in regular and large print, as well as audiobook on CD, will be available at the library's Circulation Desk one month ahead of the meeting.

Please email Christina at ccastle@braintreema.gov if you are having trouble borrowing a copy of the book.

Second Thursday Book Club

This month's discussion book is The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi.

Amazon.com: The Little Paris Bookshop eBook : George, Nina, Pare, Simon: Kindle Store Escaping from an abusive marriage, seventeen-year-old Lakshmi makes her way alone to the vibrant 1950s pink city of Jaipur. There she becomes the most highly requested henna artist—and confidante—to the wealthy women of the upper class. But trusted with the secrets of the wealthy, she can never reveal her own…

Known for her original designs and sage advice, Lakshmi must tread carefully to avoid the jealous gossips who could ruin her reputation and her livelihood. As she pursues her dream of an independent life, she is startled one day when she is confronted by her husband, who has tracked her down these many years later with a high-spirited young girl in tow—a sister Lakshmi never knew she had. Suddenly the caution that she has carefully cultivated as protection is threatened. Still she perseveres, applying her talents and lifting up those that surround her as she does.

Book club books are available for pick up at the circulation desk about one month before the discussion date and are due back on the night of the discussion.

Genealogy Club

Are you interested in tracing your family's history?  Are you working on your genealogy and want to meet up with others who are working on their family trees?  Then join us at the Thayer Public Library's Genealogy Club.  All are welcome from novice to expert. Come learn about the resources that the library has to offer. We can compare notes and stories as well as help each other with research.

This month we will learn proper gravestone rubbing techniques with The Gravestone Girls!

Don’t be scared of those old cemeteries, they are unique and interesting places full of folk art and history found only in New England! The images on old gravestones are considered the first graphic art of the New World and communicated messages to individuals and the community at large about virtues, ethics and standards of behavior. These objects can be more than 300 years old and still stand on the landscape in a virtual museum which serves as a gateway between the past and the present.

Everyone sometime in their life has probably done a gravestone rubbing. Some have left behind a mark of their presence through improper techniques. Others have left unsatisfied with their result and still others long to go back to do it again. Currently, there are many misconceptions about doing gravestone rubbing. Tissue paper and hard crayons are out! You will learn the safest methods for creating a rubbing while ensuring the safety and preservation of the old gravestones.

Registration is requested, but not required.  Register to be on the Genealogy Club email list to learn about genealogy webinars and special eents throughout the year.

SciFi/Fantasy Book Club

Join us Monday March 18th @7:00-8:00pm in the Reading Room for Science Fiction/Fantasy Book Club!  Visitors and new members are always welcome!  Registration is not required, but an email stating that you plan to attend is appreciated.

Our next book is...

Leviathan Wakes by S.A. Corey (SciFi)

Humanity has colonized the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond - but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, "The Scopuli," they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for - and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to "The Scopuli" and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations - and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.

Copies of the regular print edition will be available at the library's Circulation Desk one month ahead of the meeting.

All readers are always welcome!  Questions or having trouble borrowing a copy of the book? Email Christina!

Nonfiction Book Club

This month's title is Beautiful Country: A Memoir by Qian Julie Wang.

A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER * The moving story of an undocumented child living in poverty in the richest country in the world--an incandescent debut from an astonishing new talent * A TODAY SHOW #READWITHJENNA PICK

In Chinese, the word for America, Mei Guo, translates directly to "beautiful country." Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994 full of curiosity, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China, Qian's parents were professors; in America, her family is "illegal" and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive.

In Chinatown, Qian's parents labor in sweatshops. Instead of laughing at her jokes, they fight constantly, taking out the stress of their new life on one another. Shunned by her classmates and teachers for her limited English, Qian takes refuge in the library and masters the language through books, coming to think of The Berenstain Bears as her first American friends. And where there is delight to be found, Qian relishes it: her first bite of gloriously greasy pizza, weekly "shopping days," when Qian finds small treasures in the trash lining Brooklyn's streets, and a magical Christmas visit to Rockefeller Center--confirmation that the New York City she saw in movies does exist after all.

But then Qian's headstrong Ma Ma collapses, revealing an illness that she has kept secret for months for fear of the cost and scrutiny of a doctor's visit. As Ba Ba retreats further inward, Qian has little to hold onto beyond his constant refrain: Whatever happens, say that you were born here, that you've always lived here.

Inhabiting her childhood perspective with exquisite lyric clarity and unforgettable charm and strength, Qian Julie Wang has penned an essential American story about a family fracturing under the weight of invisibility, and a girl coming of age in the shadows, who never stops seeking the light

Book club books will be available for pick up at the circulation desk about one month before the discussion date and are due back on the night of the discussion.

All readers are always welcome.

Homecoming: 9781529094053: Amazon.com: BooksHomecoming by Kate Morton

A breathtaking mystery of love, lies and a cold case come back to life, told with Morton's trademark intricacy and beauty.

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959. At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek in the grounds of a grand and mysterious house, a local deliveryman makes a terrible discovery. A police investigation is called, and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia.

Many years later and thousands of miles away, Jess is a journalist in search of a story. Having lived and worked in London for nearly two decades, she now finds herself laid off from her full-time job and struggling to make ends meet. Until a phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother, Nora, has suffered a fall and been raced to the hospital.

At Nora’s house, Jess discovers a true-crime book that chronicles the police investigation into a long-buried event: the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959. It is only when Jess skims through the pages that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this once-infamous scandal - a murder mystery that has never been resolved satisfactorily.

Book club books are available at the Circulation Desk on the Main Level about a month before the meeting and are due back on the evening of the discussion.
