Breaking Ground: Henry B. Hoover, New England Modern Architect
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Interested in Modern architecture?  This illustrated talk will introduce two examples in Wayland by New England architect, Henry B. Hoover (1902-1989).  These houses will be discussed in the context of Hoover’s career as a Modern residential architect practicing from the late 1930s to the early 1970s.  Harvard-trained, Hoover developed his own "brand” of design that was informed by, but different from, the normative, Bauhaus-driven idea of modern architecture.  Beginning with his own house of 1937, the first modern house in Lincoln, his practice grew to include clients in neighboring New England Massachusetts towns including Wayland, Weston, Lincoln, Lexington, Belmont, Leominster, Gloucester, and Newton, as well as Jaffrey, New Hampshire, Thomasville, Georgia, and Miami, Florida. Notable about Hoover’s houses is that they exhibit a satisfying synthesis of the exceptional and the livable, always tailored to a particular client and site.  The publication Breaking Ground:  Henry B. Hoover, New England Modern Architect (University Press of New England, 2015), which examines all aspects of Hoover’s career, will be available for purchase and signing at the talk.

Hendrik Broekman: “LIVING THE HARPSICHORD LIFE”

Harpsichords, despite being real, stubbornly remain less well understood than unicorns by most folk, aficionados aside.  This program is intended to shed light on the making, music and other fascinations of this near-mythical instrument.  It is hoped that one might make a personal appearance.

Hendrik Broekman has been involved with harpsichords all his adult life, both as maker and player.   He progressed to his own shop in 1972.  Since 1979 he has served as the Technical Director of Hubbard Harpsichords.

Documentary Film: The Chinese Exclusion Act
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

This film explores the important connections between the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act – the only federal legislation in United States history ever to single out and name a specific race and nationality for exclusion from immigration and citizenship – and the history of American civil liberties, immigration, labor, and culture.

Historian Mae Ngai raved:

"This couldn’t come at a more important time in our country… because it tells a story, it tells our story. It shows what was done to our people, but it is also relevant to our present moment, and what is going on today, with anti-immigration laws and prejudices and what’s going on with the Muslim ban. They all have their roots, legally and politically in Chinese exclusion.”

Professor Emma Teng will offer comments after the film. Professor Teng is the T.T. and Wei Fong Chao Professor of Asian Civilizations and MacVicar Faculty Fellow at MIT.

The film runs 39 minutes.

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world. Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented. This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved.

Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of America's Most Notorious Pirates
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Author Eric Jay Dolin will discuss his recently released book Black Flags, Blue Waters which reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Through engrossing episodes of roguish glamour and extreme brutality, Dolin depicts the star pirates of this period, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.

The Guide to Walden Pond with Robert M. Thorson
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

This is the first guidebook to Henry David Thoreau’s most defining place, visited by half a million people each year and widely known as the fountainhead of America's environmental consciousness.

Using this guide, both armchair readers and trail-walkers alike can amble around the pond’s shoreline, pausing at fifteen special places to learn about people, historic events, and the natural world. Thoreau will be a constant companion via quotes from Walden. Stop by stop, the place of his book will merge with the book of his place.

Abundantly illustrated with photographs, drawings, and maps, this guide is a must-have for a meaningful, engaging tour of Walden Pond as well as a souvenir of a visit.

ROBERT M. THORSON is a professor at the University of Connecticut. An award-winning author, scientist, and journalist, he's an expert tour guide for Thoreau's Concord and a frequent speaker and consultant. From his home in Storrs, Connecticut, he walks to work on a trail through the woods.
