The Not so Golden Life of the Gilded Age Wife
7:00 PM

Some of the most interesting and important things in history are omitted because they’re taboo.  The Not-So-Golden Life of the Gilded Age Wife is “herstory” unsanitized. Herstory helps us understand each other by honoring our foremothers’ journeys. This presentation isn’t about spinning wheels, quilting bees, bustles, or butlers – audiences will laugh and grimace about the little-known issues faced by women of America’s Gilded Age. Perhaps women need to be reminded of how far we’ve come in order to see how far we still can go.  Join the Grounded Goodwife team at the Woodbury Public Library on Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 pm and go back in time to see how much has changed for present day women.  The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and is open to all, however space is limited and registration is required.

Featured Artist in the Gallery: Melody Asbury
10:00 AM

Painter Melody Asbury is the featured artist at the Woodbury Public Library during the month of October.  Growing up with an artist Mother, art was an important part of Melody’s Life. She started studying painting at the Ridgewood Art Institute while still in her teens. A fascination with people and their character prompted her to specialize in portraits. Her focus has since expanded to include traveling out west to research and execute a series on American Indians, and several years as a courtroom sketch artist. Of late her art has dealt with an agricultural theme prompted by her and her sons involvement with agricultural education at the Ellis Clark Regional Agri-Science and Technology program in Woodbury CT. The opportunity to study the animals up close, in fields and pens has been invaluable towards understanding anatomy and characteristics. She has now expanded to birds of prey and other wildlife. This also led to her being accepted as a signature member of the prestigious  international Society of Animal Artists.

Her paintings have won numerous awards through the years and are included in private collections throughout the United States and abroad.

Currently she paints from a studio in her home, she also gives workshops, demos, and teaches painting classes at her studio, and various other locations.  Ms. Asbury’s paintings will be on display at the Woodbury Public Library October 1 – 30 during regular open hours.  A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2:00 – 4:00 PM and is open to all.

Guitar Concert with Peter Biedermann
7:00 PM

Peter Biedermann is a solo instrumental guitarist based in Green Valley, AZ that has been composing and performing for over 40 years and will be appearing for the first time in the Woodbury Library. The common thread throughout his musical background is crossing the boundaries of music genres. This hybrid, contemporary style melds elements of American and European folk with jazz and blues shadings; underpinned by subtle ambient electronics. Peter began focusing on performing original solo instrumentals beginning in 2000. The music is now being presented in intimate settings such as libraries, art galleries, house concerts, churches etc.

Peter will be focusing on pieces from his latest recording 'Tales From The Desert' on a variety of guitars in unique tunings. The program encourages questions from the audience and will also include some of the history and evolution of steel string guitar playing over the last 50+ years. CD's will be for sale after the performance. Please go to www.biedermannmusic.com for more information.

The Facts on Fat with Lisa Larkin
7:00 AM - 8:30 AM

Join Ceritifed Health & Wellness Coach Lisa Larkin for The Facts on Fats.  Fats in general have gotten a bad rap in our heart-healthy and fat-obsessed diet culture.  Do we eat a no-fat diet, low-fat diet or full-fat diet?  Not all fats are created equally and not all affect the body in the same way. In this program you will learn:

  • the low-fat diet risk that may surprise you
  • why fats are necessary for a healthy body and lifestyle
  • the truth and powerful health benefits of monounsaturated fats
  • how eating the right kinds of fats can lower body weight

Also, we will be munching on some avocado samplings!

Mom-ologue: the Mother of all Seminars
2:00 PM

Every woman is a daughter – and even the best mother is imperfect. Join the Grounded Goodwife duo, Velya Jancz-Urban and Ehris Urban as they explore motherhood in this Friends of the Library sponsored seminar on Saturday, October 20 at 2:00 at the Woodbury Public Library. Learn how your ability to nurture and care for yourself depends very much on how your mom’s history has influenced your life. The mother-daughter relationship sets the stage for all other relationships, but until you figure out your mom’s miasm – as well as your own – you may have difficulty understanding yourself and your interactions with others. Mom-ologue will support you to recognize and embrace the warm, loving presence of “the maternal.” Once you master miasms, your worldview will change. Perhaps you’ll rewrite your future!  Registration is requested.
