To celebrate Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust 60th Anniversary this year, The Woodbury Public Library will host an exhibition of artwork by Flanders founder Natalie Van Vleck.
The exhibition will feature some of the more than 150 works of art by Flanders founder Natalie Van Vleck that Flanders Curator Marc Chabot and the Flanders Art Committee have tracked down since 1998. A good number of the pieces have been acquired by bequest and donation to Flanders, allowing them to build the most significant collection of art and artifacts relating to this important and fascinating American Woman Modernist Artist and Artisan, who ultimately became a pioneer of land preservation and environmental education. Natalie Van Vleck has left a rich creative legacy of her own artwork and a beautiful working New England Farm with a vision of creating a green belt to preserve our rich agricultural heritage and foster awareness and responsible stewardship among our local and inner city youth through immersion in nature, artistic self-expression and environmental education. The artwork will be on display during regular library hours.

We are delighted to invite you to join us for a virtual conversation with the amazing author and illustrator of Following the Water: a Hydromancer's Notebook.
Following the Water is the intensely observed chronicle of David Carroll s annual March-to-November wetlands immersion from the joy of the first turtle sighting in March to the gorgeously described, vibrant trilling of tree frogs ("lichen with eyes") in late May to the ancient sense of love and loss Carroll experiences each autumn when it is time once again to part with open water.
The writer, naturalist, and artist David Carroll illuminates the ecology and life histories the tree frogs, hawks, foxes, and the increasingly rare wood and spotted turtles he has been tracking for decades with the precision and passion that won him a 2006 MacArthur "genius" award, A Boston Globe Best Nonfiction Book of 2009 and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Books will be available to check out at the front desk. See more about his story here: https://www.storypreservation.org/david-carroll-naturalist-book-illustrator-writer

Join Historian and author John Cilio as he shares the history and origins of America’s most recent addition to our national holiday schedule, Juneteenth. It is the 11th national holiday and the first authorized in the 21st century.
It’s also a holiday recognized in all 50 states with Texas being the first state to legislate it as a state paid holiday. Juneteenth is a portmanteau word for June and nineteenth. It commemorates the June 19, 1865 Federal Government’s announcement in Texas that emancipated the last enslaved African-American people of the Confederate South. Juneteenth, originally known as Jubilee Day, is a special holiday celebrating the promise of tomorrow that freedom provides every citizen.
John Cilio is a historian, storyteller, a member of the Organization of American Historians and the Association for the Study of Connecticut History. He thrives on researching the ghosts of our past, uncovering the underlying forces and historical trends that one single event rarely impacts. He believes that often the consequences of a historical incident were hidden from those that experienced it, yet looking back, one can sense the full impact of their moments in time.
John lives in Sherman, CT, and is the author of six historical books and written over 200 articles. He has spoken at over 475 events on a wide range of topics in several countries. His goal is to make history relevant, engaging, and enlightening.

The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin
As the Page Turns book discussion group meets monthly at the WPL. A variety of contemporary fiction is discussed. Books are available to check out at the front desk prior to the meeting. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 2:00 PM (please note the change in date for this meeting!). All readers are welcome!
“A beautiful debut, funny, tender, and animated by a willingness to confront life’s obstacles and find a way to survive. . . . It celebrates friendship, finds meaning in difficulty and lets the reader explore dark places while always allowing for the possibility of light. Lenni and Margot are fine companions for all our springtime journeys.”—Harper’s Bazaar, UK
An extraordinary friendship. A lifetime of stories.
Seventeen-year-old Lenni Pettersson lives on the Terminal Ward at the Glasgow Princess Royal Hospital. Though the teenager has been told she’s dying, she still has plenty of living to do. Joining the hospital’s arts and crafts class, she meets the magnificent Margot, an 83-year-old, purple-pajama-wearing, fruitcake-eating rebel, who transforms Lenni in ways she never imagined.

While walking is great exercise, in this program we will be focusing on a total body workout! In this class, participants will tone up, release tension from their bodies, boost their immune system, speed up their metabolism, connect with others, enjoy the outdoors, and feel their best! According to the Mayo Clinic, there are 5 components of a well-rounded fitness routine: cardiovascular endurance, strength training, core exercises, balance training, and flexibility. In this active outdoor class, participants will learn how to incorporate these 5 elements of fitness into their walking routine. We will walk, stretch, and target tone the arms, legs, and abs (without getting on the ground)! No equipment needed. Comfortable clothing and sneakers are recommended. Optional to bring water bottle and mesh/sport bag. In the event of rain, we will still hold this program inside as Indoor Walk & Tone!

The WSCC and the WPL are very excited to bring back the popular cookbook club! This month we are using the fantastic line of Food52 cookbooks for our cooking inspiration!
Here’s how it works:
Copies of the cookbooks chosen for each month will be available to check out at the Woodbury Library – join us - all levels welcome!
We meet at 6:00 pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month at the Woodbury Senior Community Center to share recipes and a meal.
To avoid any duplicates, we ask for you to call Marla Martin at the WPL 203-263-3502 or Loryn Ray at the WSCC 203-263-2828 and let us know the recipe you are planning to share.
Here’s what you’ll need to bring to the club meeting:
· serving utensil(s) for your dish
· your own utensils, drinkware & plate
· a cloth napkin
· your premade recipe, ready to serve
We would like to lessen our environmental impact so paper goods will no longer be provided.
Instead, we suggest you make up a “cookbook club” bag and pop a plate, napkin, a glass (maybe a plastic one!) and silverware in it. We will provide ice water; if you prefer another beverage please bring you own. (The “cookbook club bag” is sounding pretty handy now, isn’t it?)
We will discuss the recipes/cookbooks/chefs over a delicious dinner made by the group.
At this time, Cookbook Club is limited to a total of 20 participants so recipe registration is a must!

Woodbury Public Library staff member Anna Bunovsky brings her love of classic cinema to the Library in a new film discussion series.
Participants will watch the film followed by a conversation about the movie.
Anna Bunovsky is currently a sophomore at Southern Connecticut State University, where she is an ILS major. She works part-time at the Woodbury Public Library in circulation services, and is working towards building a career in librarianship. Her fascinations began at an early age, when she learned that many of her favorite Disney films were based on preexisting books and fairy tales.

A cigar wrapper is the tobacco leaf that you see on the outside of the cigar. Most makers agree that a wrapper has the greatest potential to impact the subtle flavor notes of a great cigar. Connecticut started growing tobacco in 1640, eventually producing shade-grown tobacco for wrappers in 1901. Since then, CT farmers have produced some of the finest wrappers in the world. To produce this cash crop, farmers use cheesecloth or nylon netting to help protect the growing leaves from the sun’s rays and damaging winds. The technique has elevated CT-grown shade tobacco wrappers into the top tier of choice from the more than 50 that exist. Learn some of the histories of tobacco, cigars and Connecticut shade-grown wrappers with us.

Participants will watch the film followed by a conversation about the movie.
Anna Bunovsky is currently a sophomore at Southern Connecticut State University, where she is an ILS major. She works part-time at the Woodbury Public Library in circulation services, and is working towards building a career in librarianship.
