Spring Cleaning Hacks: How to Get Started When You Don’t Want To

There’s a lot of advice out there about spring cleaning and decluttering. We may want to spark joy with our surroundings, conquer the paper piles on our desks, or organize our sock drawer. The truth is most of us would rather be doing something else. In this presentation, psychologist Kelly Kandra Hughes will share insights from personality and behavioral neuroscience research that explains how our brains are the biggest obstacle to our decluttering success, as well as share practical advice that can jumpstart our motivation and help us tackle the items on our spring cleaning to-do list.

Kelly Kandra Hughes earned her PhD in psychology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After quitting her job as a tenured associate professor, Kelly gave away, donated, recycled, and trashed 95% of her belongings. Although she has zero expectations that anyone else should subscribe to her level of minimalism, she is always happy to assist others on their personal growth journeys, particularly with decluttering, goal setting, and behavior change.

DAR Genealogy Workshop

As we approach the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, have you ever wondered if you are descended from someone who helped found our country? An American Patriot, as defined by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, is anyone who contributed to the cause of American freedom.

Consider membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a volunteer women’s service organization that honors and preserves the legacy of our Patriot ancestors. Nearly 250 years ago, American Patriots fought and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. As a member of the DAR, you can continue this legacy by actively promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education for children.

The Trumbull-Porter Chapter DAR, will be holding a Genealogy Workshop for women interested in joining the DAR. Experienced genealogists will be present to help you get started on your search. Please bring any documentation you have collected so far that shows your lineage.

Reservations are requested. Please contact Chapter Registrar, Katie Gabrielson at 203-217-2234 or Katieg.TrumbullPorterDAR@gmail.com for more information.

Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership. DAR volunteers are willing to provide guidance and assistance with your first step into the world of genealogy.  DAR has nearly 190,000 members in nearly 3,000 chapters worldwide, including chapters in 14 foreign countries and one territory. Since its founding in 1890, DAR has admitted more than 1 million members.

The works of Master Contemporary artist J. Neil Bittner are extensive in scope and displayed throughout the world in private art collections.  The artist’s award winning works are represented in six different mediums, Oil painting collage, Serigraphy, Oil painting, Stained glass, Photography and Sculpture. Click on the Red Wax Seal under the works of art on bittnerstudios.com for the backstory.  His works of fine art are marked by precision and aesthetics that evoke a powerful emotional connection with the viewer.

Serigraph (Silk Screen) was introduced to Mr. Bittner while a graduate student working on his Master of Arts Degree in painting at Michigan State University.  Mr. Bittner went on to complete his Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree in one and a half years, normally a three year program. Mr. Bittner was offered a position teaching Serigraphy, Lithography and Life Drawing at Michigan State University. After returning to the East coast he taught color theory and visual organization at The University of Bridgeport for 25 years.

Each serigraphy is composed of a myriad number of colors produced individually on a separate screen with a hand cut lacquer film.    Mr. Bittner has travelled extensively around the world and has documented his travels in diverse works of art.

J. Neil’s International limited edition works include Thira on Santorini, a serigraph of the Greek island volcano with the city of Thira perched high on its slopes.  Shutters and Lace, a narrow street in Mykonos rendered in aquas and blues, and Callejón de las Flores of Cordoba, capturing the essence of spring in Spain with flower-draped courtyards and alleyways.  The awe-inspiring mist shrouding Toltec Pyramids of the Yucatan, Block Island and scenes of New England are subjects of his other limited edition serigraphs.

Pearls from Carol: AuthorTalk

Join author Albert Ruggiero for readings from his book, "Pearls from Carol", a delightfully funny collection of over 300 stories and poems written by his late wife, Carol.  Books will be available for purchase.

This little volume has been both written by and is dedicated to my late wife, Carol Ann Ruggiero For twenty years she lovingly attended and wrote for a writing group known as “Writers Unlimited.” These are her words, her thoughts, her humorous outlooks on life. This book is meant to be enjoyed by anyone of any age or social background. It is real and utterly without pretense. The author possessed no hidden agenda nor did she ever aspire to be anything but what she which was a genuine lady. Her life experiences endowed her with a healthy respect for humanity along with a large dose of common sense and humor. This book can be read cover to cover but it also can be read and savored in small doses over a long period of time. Each story centers on one brief moment. Each story is a tiny world of its own. Early on, Carol was taught to “show” not just tell. This lesson well learned, is the key to understanding and enjoying “Pearls from Carol” It is my firm hope that you the reader will both enjoy and pass on these pages for the enjoyment of many. This is a timeless gem. In our troubled, complex and anxiety ridden society this book will provide many a smile and no small amount of comfort.

WEEK FIVE: POLITICS IN LATIN AMERICA

Electoral results in Latin America over the past four years have led many observers of the regional/political scene to discern a left-wing surge in the hemisphere, reminiscent of the so-called “Pink Tide” that swept the area some 20 years ago. But how much do these politicians actually have in common? What implication does their ascendency have for the region? By Jorge Castañeda

Beneficial Insects as Pest Control

Gardening and landscaping are fantastic activates for outdoor enthusiasts.  One of the most satisfying fruits of one’s labor (sometimes literally) are beautiful gardenscapes that are breathtaking to behold.  Unfortunately, there are sometimes negative factors that affect our outdoor sanctuaries in the forms of pest insects, diseases, and other environmental factors.  The traditional course of action has often been to look up pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical solutions to these issues.  However, chemicals are not necessarily the only answer.  In the interest of trying to create a healthier environment, it is advantageous to consider more natural solutions.

Join Reference & Technology Librarian Ron Fairchild for a glimpse at some different options for natural pesticides and herbicides, including some truly fascinating beneficial insect and arachnid species!

Leela and the Forest of Light Book Talk with Author Lin Northrup

Get ready to go on a vision quest for Mother Earth!

Join author Lin Northrup as she shares excerpts from Leela and the Forest of Light, an inspiring story about finding our place in the circle of life so we can be earth-wise humans!  The talk suitable for all ages.  Follow Leela into a mystical forest and discover how the animals and tree nation teach her the sacred point of view of all living things. This story is a hero's journey, a visionary quest that speaks to our hearts with a powerful message of 'Nature as our teacher.'  It weaves together Native American wisdom that connects us to the natural world in such a beautiful way. Their tradition honors all animals as teachers who offer us life lessons.

Fox tells Leela, “Humans have forgotten their place in the circle of life. When things get out of balance, the children of earth and sky come forward to help the planet.”

Find out how Fox, Hawk, Deer, Mountain Lion, Gray Wolf, a shaman, and wise medicine women teach Leela the skills she'll need to fulfill the prophecy and face the forces that ignore nature's laws of equality and unity.

Lin Northrup, linnorthup.com, was a teacher of gifted programs, taught at Naugatuck Valley Community College, offers creative writing workshops and lives in a quiet corner of planet Earth with her rescue cat, Max.

Money Smart Week: En Espanol Financial Institutions (Virtual Event)

The Bear Reality with Master Wildlife Conservationist Felicia Ortner

Join Felicia Ortner, a Connecticut Master Wildlife Conservationist and bear enthusiast, as she provides education about bears and helps dispel misunderstandings.  Ortner, who has been involved in bear research in Connecticut for 25 years, will describe the resurgence of this remarkable survivor that once was extinct in the state, and is now rapidly increasing, numbering in the hundreds.

In the mid 1990s, Ortner turned her passion for learning about bears into a passion for teaching about them. Since 2008, she has presented bear education programs on behalf of the CTDEEP’s Master Wildlife Conservation program, and has logged over 310 outreach education hours, connecting with over 5,800 people in more than 190 programs in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.  With the populations of black bear increasing through New England and New York State, Ortner hopes “through outreach and education that these magnificent creatures will become better understood, we will learn to respect them instead of fear them and a strategy of coexistence with humans and bears is in the future.”

Cook Book Club: Half Baked Harvest

The WSCC and the WPL are very excited to bring back the popular cookbook club!  This month we are using the wonderful "Half Baked Harvest" cookbook series for cooking inspiration!

Here’s how it works:

Copies of the cookbooks chosen for each month will be available to check out at the Woodbury Library – join us - all levels welcome!

We meet at 6:00 pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month at the Woodbury Senior Community Center to share recipes and a meal.

To avoid any duplicates, we ask for you to call Marla Martin at the WPL 203-263-3502 or Loryn Ray at the WSCC 203-263-2828 and let us know the recipe you are planning to share.

Here’s what you’ll need to bring to the club meeting:

· serving utensil(s) for your dish

· your own utensils, drinkware & plate

· a cloth napkin

· your premade recipe, ready to serve

We would like to lessen our environmental impact so paper goods will no longer be provided.

Instead, we suggest you make up a “cookbook club” bag and pop a plate, napkin, a glass (maybe a plastic one!) and silverware in it.  We will provide ice water; if you prefer another beverage please bring you own. (The “cookbook club bag” is sounding pretty handy now, isn’t it?)

We will discuss the recipes/cookbooks/chefs over a delicious dinner made by the group.

At this time, Cookbook Club is limited to a total  of 20 participants so recipe registration is a must.

Celebration of Poetry

Woodbury Public Library will host an all-day celebration of poetry in the Library's Gallery Space. Join Connecticut's Poet Laureate, Antoinette Brim-Bell, along with several other Connecticut poets for panel discussions and workshops on poetry, poetry and art, and poetry and music.

Presenters:  Antoinette Brim-Bell (West Haven), Emma Bocciarelli (pianist, Griswold); Sandy Carlson (Woodbury), Julie Cook (Woodbury), Pegi Dietz Shea (Vernon), Suzanne Frischkorn (Redding), Barb Jennes (Ridgefield), Jim Kelleher (Goshen), Sarah Marze (Canton), Pat Mottola (Cheshire), Tom Nicotera (Bloomfield), Lin Northrup (Woodbury), Steve Parlato (Middlebury), Katie Schneider (Norwalk), Jack Sheedy (Harwinton), Connor Shirshac (Columbia), Faith Vicinanza (Southbury)

PANELS:

What is poetry? A conversation about what makes a poem: How do you know a poem when you see one? Why do writers write poems? What is their place in our world? Do we need them? Who are these poems for?

Why We Write. A conversation about why we write: Who is the audience we hold in our minds as we write? Whom do we hope will read our finished poems? What does it mean to publish a poem in a world of social media, in-person and online open mics, blogs, and traditional and selfpublishing?

Music & Poetry Playshop. Poetry can stand on its own or be enhanced by musical accompaniment. In this creative session, participants have permission to awaken their inner musicians by picking up easy-to-play instruments such as drums, chimes, and shakers to accompany short poetry readings — and then trade roles. Join the fun and open your ears to a new way to enjoy poetry!

Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop. Ekphrastic poetry is defined as poems about works of art. “Ekphrasis” is a Greek word that means to describe in vivid detail. In this workshop, you’ll explore ekphrastic poems alongside the works of art they take as their subject, and you’ll have the opportunity to try your hand at writing an ekphrastic poem.

An Exploration of Poetry and Place. A conversation about the relationship between what we write and where we are: How does where we are influence, or interact with, what we write? The designation of poet laureate is defined by geography. How is that assignment reflected in the poets’ work? How does poetry go beyond those borders? How does it celebrate place?

Art Song & Contemporary Poetry. In the art song repertoire, there is a distinct lack of contemporary music written with developing vocalists in mind. Supported by a UConn IDEA Grant, Sarah Marze composed a songbook and created educational resources for high school students of classical voice and their teachers. In collaboration with poets from the Connecticut Poetry Society, Marze has set six poems that are age-appropriate, fulfilling and accessible for young students. The songs, while written to be teaching tools, contain expressive music for all ages meant to be a bridge into contemporary music. Marze, Emma Bocciarelli, and Conor Shirshac will perform songs from Let Us Sing.

Marze, Emma Bocciarelli, and Conor Shirshac will perform songs from Let Us Sing.

Author Talk with Jennifer Lupone

Author Jennifer Lupone will share excerpts from her book Your Life is Your Journey.

A joyful and down to earth person, Ms. Lupone loves to inspire and to see others succeed and be happy. After struggling with her own anxiety and insecurity, she wrote a book called Your Life is Your Journey. The book also talks about the devastating illness, Huntington’s disease, as well as depression, anxiety, and other life struggles. It is also about drawing yourself closer to God, and living a faithful life. The author shares that loving who you are is the most important thing we can learn to do.  She talks about boundaries, knowing when to let go, and that being weak is okay. Ms. Lupone feels everyone can use encouragement about how to deal with life’s obstacles, heartache, heartbreak, and so much more.  She prays that her book touches many lives, opens new doors and possibilities.

WEEK SEVEN: IRAN AT A CROSSROADS

By the fall of 2022, Iran was in a state of turmoil due to widespread protests against government-enforced wearing of the hijab, a failing economy, an ineffective new president, and the looming succession of the country’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Abroad, renewal of the Iran nuclear deal seemed doubtful and tensions remain high between Iran, Israel, and Arab states. Many Iranians have lost hope of a better future, and the country seems at a crossroads. How should the United States deal with it? By Lawrence Potter
