Mystery Book Club on Zoom

This month we will discuss The Red House Mystery by A. A. Milne. Best known as the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, Milne takes readers to the Red House, a comfortable residence in the placid English countryside that is the bachelor home of Mr. Mark Ablett. While visiting this cozy retreat, amateur detective Anthony Gillingham and his chum, Bill Beverley, investigate their genial host's disappearance and its connection with a mysterious shooting. Between games of billiards and bowls, the taking of tea, and other genteel pursuits, Gillingham and Beverley explore the possibilities in a light-hearted series of capers involving secret passageways, underwater evidence, and other atmospheric devices.

Copies of the book are available at both libraries; call to set up a pick-up time. You can also check out the ebook or audiobook from Hoopla with no wait or the ebook from Overdrive/Libby with your CLAMS card. Please email ckaufmann@clamsnet.org or call the library at 508-760-4820 to register to receive a Zoom link or with any questions.

If you need Zoom assistance, please call 508-258-9496 or email ckaufmann@clamsnet.org to set up a troubleshooting session.

Online Zoom Book Talk

This month we will be discussing Go Tell It On the Mountain by James Baldwin. Originally published in 1953, Go Tell It on the Mountain was James Baldwin's first major work, based in part on his own childhood in Harlem. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a Pentecostal storefront church in Harlem. Baldwin's rendering of his protagonist's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle toward self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understood themselves.

Copies of the book are available at both libraries; call to set up a pick-up time. You can also read the ebook or listen to the audiobook on Overdrive/Libby through CLAMS or another consortium in Massachusetts with your CLAMS card. Please email ckaufmann@clamsnet.org or call the library at 508-760-4820 to register to receive a Zoom link or with any questions.

If you need Zoom assistance, please call 508-258-9496 or email  ckaufmann@clamsnet.org to set up a troubleshooting session.

Mystery Book Club on Zoom

This month we will discuss The Unquiet Dead by Ausma Zehanat Khan. Detective Esa Khattak is in the midst of his evening prayers when he receives a phone call asking that he and Detective Rachel Getty look into the death of a local man who has fallen off a cliff. At first Christopher Drayton's death--which looks like an accident--doesn't seem to warrant a police investigation, especially not from Khattak and Rachel's team, which handles minority-sensitive cases. But it soon comes to light that Drayton might have been living under an assumed name, and he may not have been the upstanding Canadian citizen he appeared to be. In fact, he may have been a Bosnian war criminal with ties to the Srebrenica massacre of 1995.

Copies of the book are available at both libraries; call to set up a pick-up time. You can also check out the audiobook from Hoopla with no wait or the ebook from Overdrive/Libby with your CLAMS card.

This month we will be discussing My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her "missing" boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit. A kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where Korede works is the bright spot in her life. She dreams of the day when he will realize they're perfect for each other. But one day Ayoola shows up to the hospital uninvited and he takes notice. When he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and what she will do about it.
