Productive Conversations Without Confrontation: A Cape-wide community discussion with the News Literacy Project

Thursday April 25 at 5:30 pm

Two ways to participate: either join the Zoom from home, or join us at the South Yarmouth Library to watch as a group! Please register to be sent the Zoom link.

When was the last time you had a conversation about current events with someone who holds an opposing view? If that experience left you feeling frustrated and shut down, join this virtual Cape-wide discussion with the News Literacy Project to learn tools for speaking about current events and listening across divides.

In today’s divided political climate it can feel impossible to hold civil conversations about current events – especially when misinformation and conspiracy theories abound. However, learning a few news literacy skills can help you keep conversations grounded in fact while maintaining the civility that is essential in a thriving democracy.

This is the first of two events with the News Literacy Project organized by the Sturgis Library. Look for the next one on May 23!

About the News Literacy Project: The News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan education nonprofit, is building a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy throughout American society, creating better informed, more engaged and more empowered individuals—and ultimately a stronger democracy.

Organize Your Family Photos: Digitize Them (Repeat Class!)

Family photos are great for tracing your genealogy and documenting your family history. One easy and inexpensive way to organize and preserve your photos is to digitize them. Once digitized, you can organize them into folders and albums, or create videos and websites, and share them with family and friends. And once they’re digitized, they are protected from damage by fire, water, general deterioration, or loss.

In this hour-long introduction at the South Yarmouth Library, you'll learn: digital vs print media; how to use a cell phone to digitize photos; the importance of understanding the cloud; safe keeping and sharing of images and information by creating albums, videos, or websites - and more!

If you attended this event in January, this will be a repeat of the same content, but you are welcome to drop in at 12:00 for a hands-on help session.

Yarmouth resident Hilary Godin, a retired art teacher and former website manager, will share her expertise in digital design combined with her interest in preserving family history with photos.

Environmental Toxins in our Personal Care Products

Every day, we use soaps, lotions, deodorants, hair products and cosmetics on various parts of our bodies. But in recent years, an increasing number of reports have raised concerns about many of them. Cosmetics and personal care products are notoriously under-regulated. Companies often spruce up labels with words like “naturally derived,” “nontoxic” and “clean” — which sound good, but are basically just marketing terms.

How is the average consumer supposed to sort through which chemicals might do them harm? Learn about the problems, issues and some simple solutions.

Brought to you by Dr. Jeanne Schumacher, a Cape Cod resident who has taught science and has lived a plant-based life for years. She is living proof that this type of eating can change your life and improve your health.

Morning Book Group

This book group meets every month on the 2nd Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the South Yarmouth Library. We read a mix of fiction, nonfiction, classics, and the occasional mystrery.

On Thursday May 9 we will discuss Rough Sleepers, by Tracy Kidder. "When he graduated from Harvard Medical School, Jim O'Connell was asked by the Dean to spend one year setting up a program to care for the homeless population in Boston. It became Jim O'Connell's life calling, to help people known as "rough sleepers." For the past three decades, Dr. O'Connell has run the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program, which he helped to create. Affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital, the program includes clinics and a van on which Dr O'Connell and his staff ride through the Boston streets at night, offering outreach of medical care, socks, soup, and friendship to a marginalized community."

Print copies of the book are available to pick up at The South Yarmouth and West Yarmouth Libraries.

Please email syarmouth@clamsnet.org or call the library at 508-760-4820 with any questions. No registration is required, and readers are welcome to drop in as the  month's title is of interest.

Zoom Talk: How to Find Love When You're Weird

“How To Find Love When You’re Weird,” a discussion with Romance Author Camilla Evergreen celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month

Monday, May 20, 7:00 p.m., Online via Zoom

Romance author Camilla Evergreen’s "How to Find Love When You're Weird" makes it clear that people on the spectrum - in fact, ALL people - are worthy of love and a HEA (happily ever after). In fact, perhaps it's those neurodiverse characteristics that may make someone even more attractive to the right person. This program is shared with us by the Ashland Public Library, and we are grateful!

Avoiding Election Misinformation: with the News Literacy Project

Join this virtual Cape-wide community discussion with the News Literacy Project and WCAI’s The Point host Mindy Todd to learn how to access trustworthy news and avoid election misinformation traps. If you’d like to attend from home by Zoom, register here to receive the Zoom link. If you’d like to watch as a group, join us at the South Yarmouth Library.

Finding high quality, trustworthy information can feel overwhelming in today’s noisy media environment, particularly during election season. Luckily, there are tried and true news literacy techniques that anyone can learn to find credible information about candidates, issues, and electoral processes. Join this virtual discussion to find out how Cape Cod residents can stay informed with accurate, reliable information this election season.

The News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan education nonprofit, is building a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy throughout American society, creating better informed, more engaged and more empowered individuals— and ultimately a stronger democracy.

Mindy Todd is the host and producer of The Point on WCAI radio, a show that examines critical issues for the Cape, Islands, and South Coast Massachusetts. She brings more than 40 years of experience in radio and television to her role. As the featured guest of this discussion, she will speak to the importance of high quality local news and robust regional reporting in accessing quality election information.

Thursdays At The Movies
We begin a new series of Thursdays at the movies in May and June with five films made from books. The question is, are these movies as good as the books, or maybe even better?

Come to one or all; no registration is required. Every other Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the South Yarmouth Library

May 30: Chocolat, 2000, PG 13, 121 minutes Based on the 1999 novel Chocolat by the English author Joanne Harris, directed by Lasse Hallström, this is the story of a chocolatiere, played by Juliette Binoche, who arrives in a fictional French village at the beginning of Lent with her six-year-old daughter. Soon, she and her chocolate influence the lives of the townspeople of this repressed community in different and interesting ways.

Mystery Book Group

The Mystery Book Group meets online via Zoom at 6:00 p.m. on the first Monday of even-numbered months. The June session will discuss Lavender House, by Lev A. C. Rosen. "Lavender House, 1952: the family seat of recently deceased matriarch Irene Lamontaine, head of the famous Lamontaine soap empire. Irene's recipes for her signature scents are a well guarded secret--but it's not the only one behind these gates. This estate offers a unique freedom, where none of the residents or staff hide who they are. But to keep their secret, they've needed to keep others out. And now they're worried they're keeping a murderer in."

Print copies of the book are available to pick up at the South Yarmouth and West Yarmouth Libraries.

Please email ckaufmann@clamsnet.org or call the library at 508-760-4820 to register to receive a Zoom link or with any questions. If you need Zoom help, please call 508-760-4820 to set up a troubleshooting session. No registration is required and you are welcome to drop in an out of the group as the titles interest you.
