Tree Survey
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

A neighborhood survey is being coordinated by a graduate student from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in collaboration with the Greenfield Tree Committee.

We would like to learn what you think about your neighborhood’s visual appeal, your feelings of safety, and your overall satisfaction living in your neighborhood. We will offer the results to the Greenfield Tree Committee, the Franklin Land Trust, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and other local programs to help with planning and organizing community projects in your neighborhood.

Look4Help Information
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Mary McClintock from Community Action will be at the Greenfield Public Library on Monday, July 22 from 1-3 to answer questions about the new website, Look4Help.

The Look4Help Public Resource Directory, a program of Community Action Pioneer Valley, is a free, web-based public information service that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are close to 1,000 agencies, programs or services at over 450 locations, available to serve you.  The Directory was created in response to a community need for a centralized online tool to facilitate communication of available resources, service information, referrals, and a coordination of services, and the website provides a free on-line searchable listing of supportive local resources, and includes detailed, up-to-date information about organizations and their programs. Look4Help lists the services of non-profit organizations, government agencies, health and human services, medical and mental health providers, and others.

Look4Help serves the residents of Franklin and Hampshire Counties and the North Quabbin region of Western Massachusetts. Where services overlap, Look4Help also includes resources covering portions of Worcester, Hampden, and Berkshire counties. Selected regional and state agencies are also listed.

Truth School- Educating Social Change Leaders
1:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Disability 101 A free offering of the Truth School. Registration required at truthschool.org Recommended for parents, teachers, politicians, supervisors and others. Disability 101 provides participants a basic understanding of what it means to have a disability. Disability oppression is institutionalized on all levels. Societies mind set regarding people with disabilities is of the separate is equal ideology. People with disabilities do not have the same access as their able bodied peers. Overall lack of awareness of the physical and mental processes required of individuals with disabilities to take care of their daily needs is reflected in institutional policies and procedures which impact the lives of individuals with disabilities. Cultural norms, peoples’ attitudes, and behaviors keep people with disabilities from experiencing a holistic and environmentally balanced life. The lack of access interferes with people with disabilities securing support, services, and assistance. Learn basic information about the laws. Learn the do’s and don’ts from disability theory, manage access and become an ally. Led by Dr. Madeline L. Peters has worked in higher education for the past 38 years, 30 of which she has served as the Director of Disability Services (DC) at UMass Amherst. Dr. Peters is a veteran, author, educator, and consultant. She has experience in successfully navigating and complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), and operating as an Accommodation Specialist/Advocate

Evanston's Living History with Craig Dudnick
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

“Evanston’s Living History” is a compilation of Dudnick’s interviews with members of the Evanston, Illinois African American community, including descendants of Crawford’s family and residents who lived through segregation. The documentary also describes the accomplishments of several prominent black Evanston residents, including Edwin Jourdain, the city’s first black alderman, former police chief William Logan, former fire Chief Sanders Hicks and former mayor Lorraine Morton. The documentary has no commentary. Its power is in first-person stories.

Said Dudnick, “The individual stories combine to tell a national story about a group of people who transformed a community through dignity and humanity. They don’t fight fire with fire. I think that’s a value and an approach that need more attention.”

Project Native Plant Trust
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Project Native Plant Trust, the nation’s first plant conservation organization, will offer a plant conservation lecture at the Greenfield Library. The program, entitled, “Plant Communities of Massachusetts,” will provide an overview of the extraordinary diversity of native plant communities in the state, with example plants and environmental features. The goal is to raise awareness and appreciation of the area’s habitats, to educate about plant communities’ current status, and to encourage ways to conserve local natural resources. This program has piloted as a webinar, with successful engagement. Greenfield Library’s program will be part of a larger state-wide initiative called the Plant Conservation Lecture Series, which will offer the program through libraries in several towns throughout Massachusetts.

Truth School- Educating Social Change Leaders
2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Indigenous transformative/restorative practices are based on building healthy communities where conflict is dealt with before violent acts occur. Circle Process is used to build community leadership through a consensus decision-making model. Harm between community members is seen as affecting the whole community, not just the two people involved. Restorative Circles are considered sacred and are available to both the harmed and the person(s) who committed the harm. The goal is to restore the community to wholeness through a healing process, not a punitive process. Restorative Justice practices in indigenous communities involve a truth and reconciliation process that includes the experience of historical trauma as critical component in understanding the root of the interpersonal violence experienced today. Led by Irene "Strong Oak" Lefebvre, MSSA. Strong Oak is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Visioning B.E.A.R. Circle Intertribal Coalition INC. She is of Mi’Kmaq and Maliseet descent. In April, 2017, Ms Lefebvre received the Visionary Voice Award from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center representing the state of Massachusetts in recognition for her work to end sexual violence. Ms. Lefebvre served on the Advisory Council for the National Sexual Resource Center from 2010-2016. She is currently a Peer Cohort, representing VBCIC, with the Just Beginnings Collaborative, a funding organization, that seeks to build a movement to end childhood sexual assault nationwide. Just recently Ms Lefebvre was appointed to the Governor’s statutory Restorative Justice Advisory Committee in the State of Massachusetts and will serve a year term beginning November 2018. She also is a member of the Reliance Policy Group working on a three-year study on mandated reporting and its impact on survivors from marginalized communities.

Truth School- Educating Social Change Leaders
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Join the happy circle with Kay Lyons at a lap-sit story hour for children age 3 and under (with a grown-up!) every Friday morning at the GPL.  Children's Librarian Kay Lyons reads books, leads the group in hand rhymes, and uses puppets to teach animal sounds and other concepts to the very young.  Children and grown-ups shake rattles, tap rhythm sticks, wave colored scarves, ring bells, and do knee bounces to simple sing-along tunes that everyone learns together.

Go on the loose with Mother Goose!  It's so much fun!  Each session is 45 minutes, 30 minutes of structured activity and 15 minutes of visiting time.  No sign-up is required and the program is free of charge, thanks to the Friends of the GPL.
