(In Person) Imaginary Universes Book Club: The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

Come join us for a discussion of the Hugo Award-nominated Sci-Fi novel, The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi. Presented by Jamie Clay, Reference Librarian. "When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization.” Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm, human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda and they're in trouble. It's not just the Kaiju Preservation Society who have found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die."

Registration is required prior to the event.

Upcycle Challenge: Puppets

Pick from a variety of recycled materials (cardboard, fabric, plastic, paper, etc.) to complete the challenge of the month. For all ages, with an adult to supervise. This month’s theme is puppets. Come just once to create a single puppet, or return again and again to create a whole set (or even a puppet theater with backdrops, if you’re feeling really ambitious!). Since there’s so much you can do with puppets, this challenge with extend through January and February. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Branch.

This is a drop-in program. There's no need to register, and you can stop by any time from 1-5 to participate.

Adult Fiction Book Club

We’ll read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. "The circus arrives without warning. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is a unique experience full of breathtaking spectacles. This is Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway, a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood just for this purpose by their instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is merely the stage for a battle to the end of imagination and will."

Registration is required.
