Book Babble (Ages 12-18) : [ NEVINS ]

Registration is required!

If you’re a fan of books and just can’t stop talking about the last one you read, Book Babble is the group for you.

If you'd like us to put each month's book on hold for you, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/o6pyJ8tJBRKJ3Q6d8.

This month we'll be reading Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker.

Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmother’s bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town. One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home. Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

If your plans change after you register and you won’t be able to come to the program, please email us at nevinsteens@nevinslibrary.org to cancel your registration so that others on the waiting list can take your place.

Thursday Evening Book Discussion Group : [ NEVINS ]

This Year's First Theme is The Fabric of Our Lives

Some of our favorite stories are woven around traditional fiber arts…weaving, rug-making, and embroidering, are just a few of these arts and we will explore a few related stories this fall.

This Month's Book Is: The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry

This is a haunting and remarkable tale told by an unforgettable, if strangely unreliable narrator—a woman from an enigmatic Salem family who can foretell the future in patterns of lace.

--

Book discussions are held on Thursday evenings 7-9pm.

You may pick up books at the Main Desk (one month prior to their discussion) any time the Library is open. Some books are available as downloadable e-books, or in Large Print or Audio. If you wish to join this Book Group you may attend any meeting. To confirm dates, book selections, or for more information call the Library at 978-686-4080 ext. 10.

TEDxNevinsLibrary: Making Connections : [ NEVINS ]

Join us for a day of inspiration and ideas at the Nevins Library’s first TEDx event.

After the last few years of social distancing, we are very pleased to present a free full-day event on the theme of “Making Connections.” Today, more than ever, the need to have and maintain connections is crucial to our well-being.

We feel that a library can be a unique forum for sharing ideas and building community. Our mission in hosting TEDxNevinsLibrary is to help build bridges and address the growing problem of broken connections within ourselves, our community, and the natural world. We have gathered a diverse group of speakers from our community who will speak about their unique take on what “making connections” can mean. Get ready to be inspired and to rethink how, you too, can make these vital connections within yourself, your community, and the world at large.

Speakers at TEDxNevinsLibrary include:

  • Ilabeshi Aina -- Founder of Girls Talk With Tolu (GTWT) and a Human Resource professional
  • Maurisa Charest -- Actress, Playwright, Director, Adjunct Professor of Theater and Communications at Northern Essex Community College
  • Christina Frei – Founder of a boutique marketing practice called Innate Marketing Genius
  • Dr. Lane Glenn -- President of Northern Essex Community College
  • Michael Gorman -- Founder of a grassroots program, The Movement Family
  • Michelle Wax -- Entrepreneur in residence at University of Connecticut; Founder of the American Happiness Project
Check out our webpage for more information about our speakers and the TEDxNevinsLibrary event.  Refreshments will be served.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxNevinsLibrary, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxNevinsLibrary  event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED

Please remember this is an all-day event.  If you arrive late, we cannot guarantee seating (even if you are registered). A YouTube video of the event will be available after the event if you are unable make it in person.

If you'd like us to put each month's books on hold for you, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/dSRdcBNw1sBM1MAB7.

This month we will be reading This Woven Kingdom by Tahereh Mafi.

To all the world, Alizeh is a disposable servant, not the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom forced to hide in plain sight. The crown prince, Kamran, has heard the prophecies foretelling the death of his king. But he could never have imagined that the servant girl with the strange eyes, the girl he can't put out of his mind, would one day soon uproot his kingdom--and the world.

Wednesday Afternoon Book Group : [ NEVINS ]

This month we are discussing L.A. Weather by Maria Amparo Escandon.

A little about the book:

Like so many of us, the Alvarado family has been tested by challenges: infidelity, aging parents, infertility, and now divorce. When the matriarch declares she's over her 40-year marriage to her Weather Channel–obsessed husband, their three adult daughters must deal with the fallout, which includes taking a hard look at their own relationships. L.A. Weather by María Amparo Escandón is a heartfelt, laugh-out-loud-funny novel about the highs and lows of family life.

The Wednesday Afternoon Book Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 1pm.  New members are always welcome.  Books are available for pick up at the Main Desk about 1 month before the next meeting.

Mah Jongg : [ NEVINS ]

Let's play Mah Jongg!  We're bringing this popular game back to the library, on the first Tuesday of the month at 1pm.

Not sure how to play?  Maybe it has been awhile?  Don't worry!  This is a friendly game, and we'll do out best to match up people with similar skill levels.

The library will provide a few scoring cards, but it would be best if players had their own.  They can be purchased HERE from the National Mah Jongg League.

WORDS Book Group : [ NEVINS ]

This book group focuses on authors and stories that explore diverse and underrepresented voices and experiences.

This month we will be discussing THE BOY WITH A BIRD IN HIS CHEST by Emme Lund.

Arriving during the yearly floods in Morning, Montana, Owen is born with a mysterious heart ailment. His mother, Janice, takes him home, expecting the worst. Instead, she awakens one morning to see a baby bird settled “inside the rib cage, next to his heart and lungs.” So begins Owen’s life as a boy with a secret, a boy who is kept inside by his mother, a boy with only the bird, Gail, for company. And so begins Lund's symbolic tale of growing up queer in the early 2000s.

Books are available at the Main Desk about one month before the meeting date.  New members are always welcome.

This month we are discussing A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline.

A little about the book:

To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family’s remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more than twenty years, she was host and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth, and became the subject of one of the best known American paintings of the twentieth century.

Nima doesn't feel understood. By her mother, who grew up far away in a different land. By her suburban town, which makes her feel too much like an outsider to fit in and not enough like an outsider to feel like that she belongs somewhere else. At least she has her childhood friend Haitham, with whom she can let her guard down and be herself. Until she doesn't. As the ground is pulled out from under her, Nima must grapple with the phantom of a life not chosen, the name her parents didn't give her at birth: Yasmeen. But that other name, that other girl, might just be more real than Nima knows.

This Year's Second Theme is Reading is Food For Your Brain

Food is not necessarily the subject of these reads, but food is in the title!  Here is our whimsical list of spring reads that appeal to us and we hope will make a delicious reading feast!

This Month's Book Is: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

On the eve of her ninth birthday, unassuming Rose Edelstein bites into her mother's homemade lemon-chocolate cake and discovers she has a magical gift: she can taste her mother’s emotions in the slice. To her horror, she finds that her cheerful mother tastes of despair. Soon, she knows many family secrets--her father’s detachment, her mother’s transgression, her brother’s retreat from the world. But there are some family secrets that even her cursed taste buds can’t discern.
