Savvy Sightseer: Stockholm – Shall we Fika?
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Fika is a delightful Swedish custom. There’s no equivalent one-word translation for it; rather it’s a social ritual, a tradition; it’s both a noun and a verb. It means to take a break with colleagues or friends for coffee and something sweet to eat. Swedes love both! The average Swede goes through a staggering 18 pounds of coffee per year – roughly double the American rate! In many Swedish workplaces Fika is a statutory break, just like lunch. And they pair a cup of coffee with a wide variety of tantalizing pastries and treats. Come and learn about this tradition and sample the decadent desserts including Ris à la Malta, Åppelkaka och Mandel Cake and Kärleksmums. NON-REFUNDABLE FEE of $5 payable in cash only.

Registration begins late August for PJFL cardholders and September 4 for cardholders of other libraries.

Bus Trip: The Morgan Library with Tour and Lunch @ the Empire State Building
8:30 AM - 7:30 PM

This trip begins with a guided tour of The Morgan Library & Museum a complex of buildings in the heart of New York City.  Designed by the architectural firm  McKim, Mead & White between 1902 & 1906, this was the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan. Majestic in appearance the result was an Italian Renaissance-style palazzo with three magnificent rooms holding a collection of illuminated, literary, and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints. In 1928, the Annex building was erected and connected to the McKim library by means of a gallery and in 1988, Morgan's former residence, on Madison Avenue and 37th Street, also was added to the complex. The largest expansion in the Morgan's history, adding 75,000 square feet to the campus, was completed in 2006 and includes a new performance hall, a welcoming entrance on Madison Avenue, a new café and reading room. Next it is lunch & exhibits at the world famous landmark The Empire State Building. See its newly restored lobby with its stunning art deco ceiling murals and visit the historical Dare To Dream Exhibit, and the Sustainability Exhibit. Trip also includes admission to the Empire State Building Observatory.

The Mischlinge Exposé with Pianist Carolyn Enger
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

After the Nuremberg laws imposed labels on so many human beings, were they still able to choose their paths? Carolyn's Mischlinge Exposé weaves a multimedia tapestry around a little-known aspect of the Holocaust: the Mischlinge (a derogatory Nazi term for those neither fully Jewish nor fully Aryan). Interweaving video and audio testimony from Carolyn's godmother and her father, (both labeled Mischling, Grade A by the Nazis), with the music of German-Jewish-born composers from the salon period just before the war, the program vividly illustrates what it was like to be between worlds in Germany in the first half of the 20th century.

Carolyn has experienced considerable success as a performing and recording artist: her album of Ned Rorem's Piano Album I and Six Friends was selected by the New York Times as one of their "Best In Classical Recordings for 2013," and she has performed in venues from New York's Carnegie Hall to Bruno Walter Auditorium to the National Gallery of Art in DC.
