Yoga Storytime
10:00 AM - 11:45 AM

This four-week class is for kids ages 2,3, & 4, and their grown-ups. Yoga instructor Jessie Lampack Slattery will teach a few stretches and poses, share a story or two, and teach children more about mindfulness. Class size is limited, so please contact the library to register.

Jessie has led kids' yoga at elementary schools, community farms, recreation centers, libraries, and homeschool events. Mindfulness and body awareness in a non-competitive atmosphere helps children learn to connect with their breath, and therefore become intuitively better equipped to work through any stresses and challenges that develop in their busy little lives.

This program is part of a series of mindfulness classes that the library will be offering throughout the months of September and October. This series is funded through a grant from the Southern Tier Library Foundation.

Conversation Cafe: Banned Books and Intellectual Freedom
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The library is proud to sponsor the first in an ongoing series of community discussions with a special conversation during Banned Books Week!  Why do some books get banned or challenged?  What does “intellectual freedom” mean?  Is it ever okay to ban a book?  We’ll touch on all these topics and more at this open, facilitated discussion.  All points of view are welcome for a respectful and civil dialogue, maintained using tried-and-true methods of discourse.  Dig into the issues while enjoying a drink of your choice—the first one’s on the library!  It’s time to get to know each other again.

Due to limited space, and the constraints of the dialogue format used, we will be limiting this event to 10 participants on a first come, first served basis, so be sure to arrive on time or early!

5:30 PM - 8:00 PM

This fall, Trustee Book Club (TBC) will sit together at the STLS Annual Meeting & Conference at the Watson Homestead in Painted Post, NY. We'll eat dinner together, listen to some awards and a keynote about resilience, and talk together about the book. What are we reading?

Resilience by Rebekkah Smith Aldrich. I know, I know, we just read a book by Rebekkah. Here's the thing though, our fall Annual Meeting & Conference is themed around library resilience in the face of disruption. So really, what better book?

New to Trustee Book Club? TBC is free to you to participate in. You register using the form below and tell me if you'll be at the Annual Meeting dinner, where we'll discuss the book, or if you'd just like the book to read and discuss with your board. If you choose the latter, I'll ask you to invite me to the discussion (http://margo-gustina.youcanbook.me).

They take what they learn in our workshops and apply it at home, so that they can help their families make small, positive changes.  Participants of this session will receive a free set of ingredients to reproduce the recipe at home, courtesy of the Living Well.  Registration is required; please call (607) 664-2300 to sign up, and ask for Jon if you have any questions.

Graphic Novel Book Club: My Favorite Thing is Monsters
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

This month’s haunting selection is My Favorite Thing is Monsters, Emil Ferris’ genre-defying hit that blends “a murder mystery, a family drama, a sweeping historical epic, [and] a psychological thriller about monsters—real and imagined, within and without.” Closely related to comic books, graphic novels are a uniquely American mode of storytelling known for an incredible range of expression thanks to their union of words and pictures.  This group is intended for adults aged 18 or older.  No need to be a comic fan—give this unique medium a try!  Please call (315) 536-6114 or click the button below to register for this free event. (Be sure to talk to Alex at the library about reserving a copy of the book.)
