Keuka Compass Book Club: Undiscovered Country
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Members of the community are invited to join their friends from Keuka Compass in reading and discussing this fictional account of the relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and journalist Lorena Hickock, inspired by the historical record and over three thousand letters the pair exchanged. “Undiscovered Country artfully mixes fact and fiction to portray the intense relationship between this unlikely pair.  …  A remarkable portrait of Depression-era America, this novel tells the poignant story of how a love that was forced to remain hidden nevertheless changed history.”  Pick up your copy at Long's Cards and Books for the book club discount!

About Twin Tiers Mini Maker Faire

Saturday, April 27, 2019, 10am-3pm
SUNY Corning Community College
1 Academic Dr, Corning, NY 14830

What is a Maker Faire?

A Maker Faire is an event that celebrates arts, crafts, performance, engineering, science projects and the DIY (do-it-yourself) spirit. At Twin Tiers Mini Maker Faire, local artists, professors, craftspeople, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, tech clubs, engineers, students, and local businesses come together to show what they make. Local “makers” are invited to share what they have learned while practicing the disciplines they are passionate about. Our goal is to embolden community members of all ages to tap into their own creativity by showcasing local makers and to encourage them to go forward to create something new or learn a new art form, hobby, or craft. This event is brought to you by a partnership between Chemung County Library District, SUNY Corning Community College, and Southeast Steuben County Library, with support from Southern Tier Library System.

Event History

  • The first CCLD Maker Expo was held at the Steele Memorial Library in 2014 and had approximately 30 makers while drawing 900 attendees.
  • The second year the expo was expanded to 48 Exhibitors that drew over 1100 attendees, it would also be the year we added the Power Tool Drag Race. Attendees transformed power tools into drag racing machines, and would then compete against one another by racing them. The Power Tool Drag Race quickly became a fan-favorite and a staple of the event.
  • In the third year the event had out-grown the Steele Library. Makers and their exhibits could be found both inside and outside of the building, bustling with attendees.
  • In 2017 the event became an official Mini Maker Faire!  Chemung County Library District and SUNY Corning Community College partnered to plan the event and move it to the Arnot Mall, which gave us the opportunity to expand to allow more Makers and attendees.
  • The 2018 Twin Tiers Mini Maker Faire became a partnership between Chemung County Library District, SUNY Corning Community College, Southeast Steuben County Library, and Southern Tier Library System and attracted approximately 2000 attendees.
  • Our 2019 event will be held at Corning Community College in Corning, NY!

Maker Faire originated in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area as a project of the editors of Make: magazine.  It has since grown into a significant worldwide network of both flagship and independently-produced events.  Read more on Maker Faire history, the Maker Movement, as well as how to start a Maker Faire or a School Maker Faire where you live.

Field Trip! Phelps & Others
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Come on our field trip to Phelps Library and Community Center and Avon Free Library in the Pioneer Library System.

All STLS annual Field Trip!s include coming to STLS, hopping on a rented bus, visits to at least two libraries with lunch provided in between. We focus on the intersection of building design, interior design, organization, furniture, and service by using our hosting libraries as case studies in design for service.

It's super fun. Here's a schedule with addresses if you'd rather drive yourself. That said, lunch and commaraderie can be found on the bus. :)

10 am - 11:20 am: Travelling

11:20 am - 12:30 pm: Tour of the Phelps Library and Community Center, 8 Banta St., Suite 200, Phelps

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm: Box lunches on the bus while travelling

1:30 pm: Tour of Avon Free Library, 143 Genesee St., Avon

Arrive at STLS between 4:15 and 4:30 pm.

Yoga for Teens & Tweens
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Tweens and teens are invited to join us for an introductory class in yoga. Yoga is a wellness practice which traces its roots back thousands of years in India. It is well-accepted; professional athletes, performers, and millions of people world-wide practice it. Yoga unites body, mind & spirit through mindfulness in a way that sports, aerobic exercise, or weightlifting do not.
Research shows that practicing yoga can 1) make you stronger, 2) increase your range of motion, and 3) reduce stress from various sources. This is a free class open to those ages 10 - 18 years old, given by instructor Jane Gram, Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher. Registration is required, so please contact the library to sign up. Please bring a blanket or mat with you; dress in comfortable clothes.
