Frankenstein at 200
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

In 1818, Mary Shelley released her fabled Monster and his conflicted creator on an unsuspecting world.  Two hundred years later, Frankenstein continues to fascinate, frighten, and move us.  Celebrate this milestone by learning a little bit more about the novel’s origins and legacy as you listen in on, and contribute to, a conversation with some local Franken-philes.  All this, plus a free screening of the very first film adaptation of the story, a long-lost 1910 silent classic by Thomas Edison’s production company!  This event is free and open to the public, and there’s no registration necessary.

Storytime Practices & Tools
9:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Early Literacy is defined as EVERYTHING a child knows about communication before they learn to read or to write.

Talk. Sing. Read. Write. Play. Five practices that parents and caregivers can do everyday to prepare their child for learning in school. Sharing those practices during storytimes are, also, a vital part of an interactive, fun learning storytime!

Explore and learn about early literacy skills. Explore how to share those skills during storytimes. Create storytime tools for fun, storytime learning. Explore strorytime presentation styles. All this and more with your colleagues from libraries around the system!

This workshop will be repeated on November 1 at the Sourtheast Steuben County Library, Corning.

Graphic Novel Book Club: My Favorite Thing is Monsters

This month’s haunting selection is My Favorite Thing is Monsters, Emil Ferris’ genre-defying hit that blends “a murder mystery, a family drama, a sweeping historical epic, [and] a psychological thriller about monsters—real and imagined, within and without.” Closely related to comic books, graphic novels are a uniquely American mode of storytelling known for an incredible range of expression thanks to their union of words and pictures.  This group is intended for adults aged 18 or older.  No need to be a comic fan—give this unique medium a try!  Please call (315) 536-6114 or click the button below to register for this free event.

This workshop was also held on October 24 at the David A. Howe Library, Wellsville.

Conversation Café: Civility in Dialogue and Protest
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The library is proud to sponsor another session in an ongoing series of community discussions.  This time of year is well-known for fraught conversations around the holiday dinner table, conversations that are sure to be more animated in this era of increasingly bitter political divides.  What is the role of civility in these conversations, both at home and in the wider world?  Is it ever okay to ditch civility in pursuit of a deeply-held conviction?  And what’s behind some of the most contentious disagreements in today’s society?  All points of view are welcome for a respectful and civil dialogue, maintained using tried-and-true methods of discourse (see www.conversationcafe.org for details).  Dig into the issues while enjoying a drink of your choice—the first one’s on the library!  It’s time to get to know each other again.
