Join us for a special week long coding workshop taught by Virginia! This summer workshop is open to grades 5-8 of all coding levels. Students will code with Scratch and/or Python, depending on their comfort level. Students must bring their own laptops!
Registration is required for this program. Click here to register.
What is Scratch?
Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. It was created with the purpose of making coding an enjoyable experience for young learners, specifically designed for ages 8-16. The visual aspect of it makes it especially approachable to beginners, as users drag-and-drop blocks to create code. In addition to being a block-based programming language, it is an online community. The community is part of the creative process, as it promotes exploration and collaboration. (See for more info: About Scratch)
What is Python?
Python is a text-based programming language, unlike Scratch. This means that code is typed out and there are no blocks. Python is designed to be simple and easy to read, which makes it great for beginners, whether that be to text-based languages or programming languages in general. Real-world applications for the Python today include the fields of data science, data analysis, machine learning, data engineering, web development, software development, and more.
