GETTING STARTED WRITING/GETTING WRITING STARTED with Jason M. Rubin
You want to write (a novel, a short story, a memoir, a play, whatever). You think you’re a good enough writer to do this. But you don’t know how to get started. Or maybe you’ve started a manuscript before but hit a wall and had doubts. You’re ready to start again—but you don’t know how to build the momentum needed to finish. This workshop is for you.
There are two key things you need to write: something to write with (a laptop, a tablet, pencil and paper); and a basic ability to form crisp, cogent sentences.
That’s the easy part.
More challenging among the core requirements are the following:
Inspiration – What to write about
Investigation – Doing research to add depth to your story
Organization – How to plot your piece
Ritualization – Creating the time and space to write
In this workshop, I will provide tips on fulfilling the above requirements, as well as dealing with nagging concerns such as word counts, editing/rewriting, and whether your work might ever get published – all based on my own experience as an author of two books, an as-yet-unpublished manuscript, and numerous short stories.
The blank screen or sheet of paper is the enemy. Getting Started Writing/Getting Writing Started will help you vanquish this foe and achieve what you might have thought impossible: producing a completed written work. But first, you must get started.
