Piano Concert - David Hagan
3:00 PM
Classical pianist David Hagan presents a wide-ranging and stimulating program, including a series of works grouped under the title "Loco-motifs," and Beethoven's Sonata in C major, Op. 53, "Waldstein." Among Mr. Hagan's "locomotive" offerings will be Gioacchino Rossini's "Un Petit Train de Plaisir Comico-Imitatif;" "Streamliner" by Ernst Krenek; "En chemin de fer" by Francis Poulenc; and Arthur Honegger's "Pacific 231."
Mr. Hagan received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, where he studied with Mieczyslaw Münz and Konrad Wolff. His New York debut recital brought this comment from the New York Times: "...the crispness and energy of his pianism lent themselves effectively to interpretations that were direct and smartly phrased." Later, the Boston Globe observed, "Mr. Hagan['s] technical command was impressive, his sound rich, his personal view of the piece projected without disturbing the architecture of the work." His career has taken him to many concert halls throughout the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Hamburg, Washington and Boston. Mr. Hagan has taught at Peabody Conservatory Preparatory School, Dickinson College, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Connecticut College, Milton Academy, and the New England Conservatory.

The Finest Hours : the True Story Behind the Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue
1:00 PM
Michael Tougias, co-author of The Finest Hours, will use slides of the storm, the sinking tankers, the rescues, the victims, the survivors and the heroes to tell the story of this historic event. Tougias will describe the harrowing attempts to rescue the seamen, especially focusing on four young Coast Guardsmen who must overcome insurmountable odds to save the lives of 32 crewmen stranded aboard the stern of the Pendleton. Standing between the men and their mission were towering waves that reached 70 feet, blinding snow, and one of the most dangerous shoals in the world, the dreaded Chatham Bar. The waters along the outer arm of Cape Cod are called “the graveyard of the Atlantic” for good reason, yet this rescue defies all odds.
“I enjoy doing these programs,” says Tougias, “because I like to transport the audience into the heart of the storm so that they ask themselves ‘what would I have done.’

Concert - Spirit Fiddle
3:00 PM
Returning to the Library to start off our concerts in the New Year is Spirit Fiddle, featuring Champion Fiddler Robin Warren and Guitarist Brian Clancey. The duo perform a wide variety of energetic music, ranging from bouncy Southern and Texas swing tunes to sweet waltzes, old popular songs, bluegrass numbers, French Canadian and Celtic jigs and reels, and Parisian musette.
From The Boston Museum of Fine Arts to the renowned Fiddler's Grove Festival in Union Grove, North Carolina, from the shores of Lake Michigan to the oldest bluegrass festival in Canada, from sidewalk cafes to coffee houses and formal concerts, audiences delight in the eclectic mix of music Spirit Fiddle performs, and in their natural sense of humor on stage. Since its first appearance over 10 years ago, Spirit Fiddle has given over 700 performances and recorded 5 full-length albums. After studying classical violin as a child, and giving solo violin recitals in Boston's Brown Hall and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Master Fiddler Robin Warren took first place prizes in numerous fiddle contests in North Carolina and New England. She was the first fiddler ever to win the coveted Fiddler of the Festival title during 3 different years at Fiddler's Grove in North Carolina.
Brian Clancey brings a lifetime of experience (from Renaissance lute to bluegrass) to his sensitive guitar arrangements of Spirit Fiddle tunes. Brian is known throughout the Boston area as an outstanding rhythm player, and he is a popular backup guitar player at contests and festivals throughout New England.
