THE TRIPLE DOG DARE:  AUTHOR JOANNA WILSON

Every year since 1997, TBS has aired 24 hours of A Christmas Story.  But no one watches all 24 hours, right?  Author and Christmas TV expert Joanna Wilson discusses the 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story to find out what really happens when you watch all 12 screenings of the classic movie non-stop, commericals and all.  Along the way, she discusses the traditions of Christmas on TV, the nuances of Bob Clark's filmmaking, the ongoing appeal of the movie and its relation to the multilayered, literary storytelling of Jean Shephard.

Ever wonder why we kiss under the mistletoe? What do holly, ivy and evergreen trees have to do with Christmas? Who thought up Santa Claus? How did drinking, eating and partying become a big part of Christmas celebrations? You'll find the answers to these questions and more in this presentation. Actor/storyteller Sara Showman will take you on a journey that begins before the birth of Christ, when pagan nature worshipers planted the seeds of what would become beloved Christmas customs. Along the way, you'll hear folk tales, religious stories, and mythology, as well as Christmas songs. It's a show that combines history, stories, and songs that will add a new dimension to your Christmas celebrations!

The U.S. is the only country in the world that sentences youth to Life Without Parole. This sentence not only affects the incarcerated individual and victim, but the whole community. The choice to allow youth to receive the harshest available sentence is not shared among all states. Thirty states allow the sentence; Ohio is one of them. This program presents a film that challenges inequalities in the U.S. juvenile justice system by depicting, through documentation and reenactment, the stories of five individuals who were sentenced to Life Without Parole as youth. Reentry material and handouts provided. Room 2AB.
