Akron Science Café – Science fun and fellowship for adults, but kids like it, too.

Science Café welcomes people who might not normally get involved in scientific discussions. This open event is not an ordinary lecture, it’s a casual and interactive conversation with a scientist on Ohio's Vernal Pools -- seasonal wetlands that normally appear in wooded areas and fill with a variety of life forms in late winter through spring. Many organisms only live in or are dependent on vernal pools to complete their life cycle. Vernal pools are rich in hidden wonders waiting to be discovered.

Our Scienctist is Ray Stewart from the Ohio Wetlands Association.

Please contact Science & Technology for a list of readings suggested, but not required, by our presenter.

Science Cafe meets in the Science & Technology area on the first floor of Main Library.

Travelogue: Gorillas in the Mist (or how I survived the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda)

In March of 1999, treks through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda to see rare mountain gorillas were exclusive forays that began in a tranquil agricultural valley. That calm was shattered when eight tourists, including an American couple, were hacked or bludgeoned to death in the forest by a band of rebels who were said to be remnants of ethnic Hutu militias that carried out mass killings in Rwanda in 1994. This is the story of the first American tourists to go to Bwindi after the massacre. Led by gorilla researcher Craig Cholle, who worked with Dian Fossey in Rwanda, and two local guides, eight adventurous travelers made the journey of a lifetime. Presented by Mike Daly

Dessert and Discussion for Teens and Adults

Was the book or the movie better?  And why is it a classic anyway?  Find out as we discuss it over dessert.  Didn't like the book?  Sometimes it's even more fun to discuss that way.

For the month of  December, we will discuss A CHRISTMAS MEMORY by Truman Capote.
