Mystery Discussion: THE ART FORGER by Barbara A. Shapiro
June 19

Almost twenty-five years after the infamous art heist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, still the largest unsolved art theft in history, one of the stolen Degas paintings is delivered to the Boston studio of a young artist. Claire Roth has entered into a Faustian bargain with a powerful gallery owner by agreeing to forge the Degas in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But as she begins her work, she starts to suspect that this long-missing masterpiece, the very one that had been hanging at the Gardner for one hundred years, may itself be a forgery. The Art Forger is a thrilling novel about seeing and not seeing the secrets that lie beneath the canvas.

Presented by former teacher and historian, D.J. Reiser.  The War between the North and the South was fought in two theaters. The battle at Gettysburg in the Eastern Theater most people seem to know about, but how about the Victory at Vicksburg in the Western Theater? The Vicksburg campaign ended with surrender on July 4, 1863, the same day that Lee started his retreat from Gettysburg. Both were keys to the Union winning the Civil War. During this program, D.J. Reiser—aka The Traveler—will show and talk about Vicksburg and why it was so important. The U.S.S. Cairo will also be shown and discussed.

    Speculative Fiction:

We're meeting on a Tuesday this week instead of Thursday and will be discussing a nonfiction title this month.

THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS by Rebecca Skloot

henriettaHer name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells--taken without her knowledge--became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they'd weigh more than 50 million metric tons--as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb's effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave. Now Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the "colored" ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells; from Henrietta's small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia--a land of wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo--to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells. Henrietta's family did not learn of her "immortality" until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family--past and present--is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family--especially Henrietta's daughter Deborah, who was devastated to learn about her mother's cells. She was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Did it hurt her when researchers infected her cells with viruses and shot them into space? What happened to her sister, Elsie, who died in a mental institution at the age of fifteen? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn't her children afford health insurance? Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.

SWORN TO SILENCE by Linda Castillo

Sworn to Silence (Kate Burkholder Series #1)

Do you like to talk about the books you enjoy reading with others?  Then join us the second Monday of each month at 2 pm for reader-to-reader book discussions, informal fun, and sharing with fellow fiction lovers.

In this month's selection, a serial killer strikes Painters Mill, Ohio. The killer's signature--Roman numerals ritualistically carved into each victim's abdomen--matches the MO of four unsolved murders from 16 years earlier. Police chief Kate Burkholder, who's reluctant to dredge up the past, must keep secret that she knows why the old murders stopped. Not satisfied with the case's progress, local politicos set up a multi-jurisdictional task force to assist, including a law-enforcement agent battling his own demons. The added scrutiny and the rising body count threaten to push the chief over the edge.

No sign-up is required.  Refreshments will be served.  Come meet with other adults who like to read and discuss lighter fiction.

Ephemera Program with Tess Kindig of Garrison House Books.

Every single person encounters enough ephemera in a single day to fill a small wastebasket. It's the menu at the restaurant, the shoe catalog in the mail, the bookmark advertising a local bookseller, the postcard from your sister's trip to Disney World and the program at the concert. Most of this stuff doesn't survive, but when it does you can bet there's a story behind it. Hidden in these seemingly meaningless pieces of paper are stories of our history, both cultural and personal. All it takes to get that paper talking is a little research and a lot of curiosity. Come to the library, hear some incredible stories, and learn how to find some stories of your own!

Please call 330-376-2927 or stop by at the Highland Square Branch Library to sign up.

Speculative Fiction: RED PLANET BLUES by Robert J. Sawyer
August 1, 6:30 pm

red planet bluesRobert J. Sawyer, the author of such 'revelatory and thought-provoking'* novels as Triggers and The WWW Trilogy, presents a noir mystery expanded from his Hugo and Nebula Award-nominated novella 'Identity Theft' and his Aurora Award-winning short story 'Biding Time,' and set on a lawless Mars in a future where everything is cheap, and life is even cheaper... Alex Lomax is the one and only private eye working the mean streets of New Klondike, the Martian frontier town that sprang up forty years ago after Simon Weingarten and Denny O'Reilly discovered fossils on the Red Planet. Back on Earth, where anything can be synthesized, the remains of alien life are the most valuable of all collectibles, so shiploads of desperate treasure hunters stampeded to Mars in the Great Martian Fossil Rush. Trying to make an honest buck in a dishonest world, Lomax tracks down killers and kidnappers among the failed prospectors, corrupt cops, and a growing population of transfers--lucky stiffs who, after striking paleontological gold, upload their minds into immortal android bodies. But when he uncovers clues to solving the decades-old murders of Weingarten and O'Reilly, along with a journal that may lead to their legendary mother lode of Martian fossils, God only knows what he'll dig up...
