    Contact: Diane Klinefelter   412-276-3456, x9   klinefelterd@einetwork.net

Over 50,000 aging veterans of the Civil War converged on Gettysburg in June 1913 for the 50th anniversary of the battle. Most veterans took advantage of free rail transportation. 70 year old drummer Peter Guibert and a friend, 62 year old John Conroy WALKED the 200 miles over the Laurel and Allegheny mountains in 19 days and were the first to arrive for the reunion.  A picture at the National Archives shows Peter seated next to his drum on which is painted “Professor Guibert’s Gettysburg Band.” And the tradition continues. . . . in 2013, 70 year old Yankee drummer Peter Smith and 62 year old Ray Zimmerman followed Peter’s footsteps by beating a drum from Pittsburgh to Gettysburg. Please join us on June 13 to hear Jim Smith and the Blue & Gray Reunion band tell their fascinating story and offer some patriotic drumbeats and soldier’s reminisces. Refreshments served in the Lincoln Gallery following. Registration not required. Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.
