The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War. The Union victory ended General Robert E. Lee’s second and most ambitious invasion of the North. In recognition of Lincoln’s most famous speech, Rea Andrew Redd will discuss this most important battle as part of the ongoing Second Saturday Lectures at the ACFL&MH. His presentation will include the Battle of Gettysburg’s emergency medical situation, the farms used as hospitals, the creation of the national cemetery at Gettysburg and more. Rea Andrew Redd is a native of Washington County, Pennsylvania. He is the Director of the Eberly Library, Waynesburg University and is also an Instructor of American History. He has reenacted the American Civil War as a Federal Infantry, a Federal Medical Service Captain, and as President Lincoln Refreshments served in the Lincoln Gallery following.     Contact: Diane Klinefelter   412-276-3456, x9   klinefelterd@einetwork.net

United Airlines Flight 93, which took off from Newark Airport on Tuesday, September 11, 2001,  is perhaps the most famous flight in modern American history. We know basic details of the passenger uprising that day, but there is so much more to the story beyond its harrowing and oft-told climax. Amazingly, the definitive account of this seminal event had not been written — until Tom McMillan delivered Flight 93: The Story, The Aftermath, and The Legacy of American Courage on 9/11. Using information gleaned from interviews, oral histories, government documents, trial evidence and personal tours of the crash site, Flight 93 offers a complete and riveting narrative of what actually took place — from the origins of al-Qada’s plot in 1996 through the dedication of the national memorial on the 10th anniversary in 2011. Free and open to the public.

Tom McMillan has spent a lifetime in media and communications — as a newspaper reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, among others; as a radio talk show host; and for the past 19 years as vice president of communications for the Pittsburgh Penguins — but he also is a lifelong history buff. He serves on the board of trustees of Pittsburgh’s Heinz History Center, on the board of directors of the Friends of Flight 93 and on the marketing committee of the Gettysburg Foundation. McMillan is an alumnus of Point Park University, where he earned a degree in journalism and communications, and where he currently is co-director of the Pittsburgh Center for Sports Media and Marketing. He is donating all author’s proceeds from the book to the Flight 93 National Memorial.

misc_none 7:30 PM BNY Mellon Presents: Amanda Van Story Lewis in Concert, An Emerging Artist Performance Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Geoff Zak   412.276.3456, x6   zakg@einetwork.net

This past January, the ACFL&MH was enthralled with a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article highlighting budding opera singer Amanda Van Story Lewis.

Aspiring artist by night and singing receptionist for Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto by day, Amanda is no stranger to the spotlight. Lewis, 33,is a classically trained singer born in Washington, DC with a Bachelor's and Masters in Classical Voice Performance from Howard University. There she received instruction from Dr. James Moore and Dr. J.W. Norris. During that time, she also studied at the Academia D'ell Arte in Arezzo, Italy where she focused on opera and physical theater; and she trained with Francesca Francalanci of Florence, Italy, culminating in a solo concert.

Amanda has been fortunate to perform as a featured soloist for such prestigious events as: the 10th Anniversary of the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington DC, the Congressional Black Caucus's Black Women's Agenda in 2008, and the National Walk for Epilepsy 2010 where she sang the National Anthem. Amanda has also performed in Joyce Garett's Choir for the 2007 and 2008 Kennedy Center Honors.

Ms. Van Story Lewis moved to Pittsburgh and in 2010 received a fellowship from the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. She is currently being mentored by retired professional opera singer, Ross Dacal. This September she will make her "Carnegie Carnegie" Hall debut with traditional pieces from Mozart, Schubert and Debussy--as well as two Negro spiritual selections.

Amanda Van Story Lewis in Concert will take place on September 17, at 7:30pm in the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall in Carnegie. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

ABOUT KYIV UKRAINIAN DANCE ENSEMBLE

Vasil Avramenko(considered the Father of Ukrainian Folk Dance in North America) introduced Ukrainian folk dancing in Carnegie over 70 years ago. Though the original group of dancers became inactive during World War II, they reformed in the early 1950s under the tutorship of Mr. Avramenko. In 1962, the Sts. Peter & Paul UOL Chapter formally reactivated the group with elected officers and advisors and placed it under the directorship of Beverly Kapeluck. The group was known as the Ukrainian Folk Dancers of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It was not long before they began making public appearances.

In 1976 Mrs. Kapeluck reorganized the group to include dancers from South Side Pittsburgh, Ambridge, McKees Rocks and Monessen and became known as the Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of the Pittsburgh Area. The name Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Carnegie was adopted in 1983.

The Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble prides itself in being a training ground for young dancers. In 1994 the children’s classes were combined into a formal school under the directorship of Natalie M. Kapeluck. A curriculum for teaching a mixture of traditional Ukrainian Folk dance and ballet technique has thus evolved—instilling in the up-and-coming dancers a sense of accomplishment, discipline and a love of art.

Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and School has performed throughout the eastern seaboard and we hope that our future holds expanding that territory! Kyiv believes that Ukrainian Folk Dancing should be learned and enjoyed by all people. We aim to bring this beautiful, exciting and inspiring art form to the widest audience possible.
