Join us on the 4th Tuesday of each month for this adult book  discussion that is open to all.  A different contemporary adult fiction and non-fiction book will be discussed at each meeting.

This month’s selection is: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer& Annie Barrows (2009)
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

                              To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical novel was translated to film in 1962 by Horton Foote and the producer/director team of Robert Mulligan and Alan J. Pakula. Set a small Alabama town in the 1930s, the story focuses on scrupulously honest, highly respected lawyer Atticus Finch, magnificently embodied by Gregory Peck. Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man accused of rape. The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter Scout (Mary Badham). While Robinson's trial gives the film its momentum, there are plenty of anecdotal occurrences before and after the court date: Scout's ever-strengthening bond with older brother Jem (Philip Alford), her friendship with precocious young Dill Harris (a character based on Lee's childhood chum Truman Capote and played by John Megna), her father's no-nonsense reactions to such life-and-death crises as a rampaging mad dog, and especially Scout's reactions to, and relationship with, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall in his movie debut), the reclusive "village idiot" who turns out to be her salvation when she is attacked by a venomous bigot. To Kill a Mockingbird won Academy Awards for Best Actor (Peck), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction. ~ Hal Erickson, Rov

Let's Talk About It: Muslim Journeys "Pathways of Faith"

A scholar-led reading and discussion program

The Middletown Free Library has received another grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA) to host a five-part reading and discussion series titled “Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys". This Fall we will be exploring the theme of "Pathways of Faith" by reading and discussing the following books:

The Children of Abraham: Judaism, Christianity, Islam by F. E. Peters,  Muhammad: A Very Short Introduction by Jonathan A. C. Brown, The Story of the Qur'an: Its History and Place in Muslim Life by Ingrid Mattson, The Art of Hajj by Venetia Porter, and Rumi: Poet and Mystic edited and translated by Reynold A. Nicholson.

Dr. David Johnston will be leading the discussions and giving a short lecture at each sessions on a topic relating to the theme and book being discussed that day.

The book being read and discussed for today is Muhammad: A Very Short Introduction by Jonathan A. C. Brown on Saturday, September 27th @ 1 PM.

Copies of the books are available to borrow by contacting Laura at mireference@delcolibraries.org or by calling 610-566-7828.

Marple Library presents a first-run, award winning independent film with English subtitles on the first Wednesday of each month.

The event is free and registration is not required.

September's movie is Lucky.

Synopsis

How could a recently orphaned, 10-year old homeless South African boy ever be called Lucky? Over the grave of his dead mother, Lucky makes a promise to make something of himself. Leaving the security of his remote Zulu village for the big city with the hope of going to school, he arrives on the doorstep of an uncle who has no use for him. Lucky then falls in with Padma, an elderly Indian woman with an inherent fear of Africans, who takes him in as she would a stray dog. Together, unable to speak each other's language, they develop an unlikely bond. Through an odyssey marked by greed, violence, and, ultimately, belonging, Lucky shows how a child's spirit can bring out decency, humility and even love in adults struggling to survive in the new South Africa.

In Zulu, Hindi and English with English subtitles.
