Join us for a community discussion of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Kimmerer who explores the human relationship to the natural world.

Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, a mother, and a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings—asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass—offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices.

Leading the discussion is Doreen Alvarez Saar, Professor of English at Drexel University and Board Member of the Oakmont Farmer’s Market.

Registration is required.   Stop by the reference desk  to register.  There are a limited number of books available for check out,  so don’t delay!

This program is made possible through a partnership between the Oakmont Farmer’s Market, and the Library.  Support for the program comes from the Longwood Gardens Community Read project.

Geared to the physical level of development of our youngest babies, the primary focus in this program is a secure setting for infants who are not yet walking. This gentle yet lively storytime features bouncing and tickling rhymes, peek-a-boo games, short books, nursery rhymes, and music while the young babies sit comfortably close to their caregivers without the distraction of more mobile babies. The storytime is about 15 minutes long followed by a playtime featuring a variety of age appropriate toys. Registration is not required.

This program is not appropriate for older babies or siblings who are walking.

We've reached the 1980s with our decade by decade look at  "Oscar Noes" - great films that were nominated but didn't win Academy Awards. Plese join us and enjoy Field of Dreams  (© Universal Pictures, 1989).

Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hears a voice, followed by a brief vision of a baseball field. He believes that if he builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield, Shoeless Joe Jackson from the infamous 1919 Chicago “Black Sox” will return to play baseball. By being willing to take a chance, Ray gets a second time up at bat in life. Field of Dreams is a glowing tribute to all who dare to dream. Nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Rated PG.

The free program will be held in the library's 2nd floor meeting room. There is no elevator. If you'd like to, bring your sandwich. We'll provide beverages and dessert.

Registration is required. Please sign up here or call us at 610-789-4440.

Lark and Termite by Jayne Anne Phillips

Cpl. Robert Leavitt doesn't survive the 1950 No Gun Ri massacre in Korea.  Nine years later, his Termite and his half-sister Lark, are getting by in West Virginia.  Termite and Robert never knew each other, but are nonetheless connected.  Lark and Termite have been raised by Nona, after mother Lola disappears.  How does this group make a family?

Copies of the book will be available at the Circulation desk after 4/13/2015.

2nd & 4th Wednesdays @ 10:30 am. For ages 3 and older.

PAWS for Reading is a program that allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog in order to improve reading and communication skills. Here are some things your child should be able to do to participate:
-- Children must be able to sit calmly with a dog for about 10 minutes.
-- Reading is not required! If your child is not yet reading, he or she may look at any book with the dog and talk about the pictures. They are working on their pre-reading skills!
