This seminar, presented by SCORE and entrepreneur Ky Toure', provides an essential reality check for anyone who's looking to build a professional website. It encourages you to examine the goals of your website before you begin the building process. It is mainly aimed at small business owners, though it can be of use to anyone who is striving to build their first website or update an existing site in a professional manner. The guide is given in an easy to understand manner, so it will be simple to follow even if you don't have much prior knowledge of website building. It is meant as a helpful walk-through for anyone who wishes to have a professional looking website without having to hire a website designer. The word professional is emphasized because the focus of the guide is business websites. While you may use it to build your first personal page or a blog, the aim is to primarily help entrepreneurs. As such, the guide will focus on what's needed to build credibility among a company's target market.

The Friends of the Marple Library will present  a program on Russian Impressionism on Saturday, October 28 at 2:00 pm. Our guest speaker, Dr. Jim Curtis, will discuss and explain why the international art world is bedazzled by the new wave of Russian artists in Moscow and St Petersburg who are reshaping the very popular style of Impressionism into what is now known as Russian Impressionism.  Seen through the eyes of Russian artists the standard perspective on Impressionism is now more beautiful, beguiling and visually intriguing.  Dr. Curtis will tell us why and how this Russian movement is worth watching and enjoying during his colorful 50  minute PowerPoint presentation. A reception will immediately follow the program so all may meet and discuss the new impressionistic movement with Dr. Curtis.  This program is free and open to the public.

In this presentation, a film called "The Cut :The Journey of the Men and Women of Duffy's Cut,"will be shown. Afterwards, the film's directors, Shawn Swords and Bill Watson, will update the story and answer questions. The film tells the story of 57 Irish railroad workers who arrived in Philadelphia to build mile 59 of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad, and died within six to eight weeks of violence and cholera. The Irishmen were from Donegal, Tyrone and Derry in Ulster, with an average age of 22. A project, headed by Dr. Bill Watson and his brother Rev. Frank Watson, has been underway since 2002 to locate the graves of these workers and properly rebury them. To date, the graves of seven workers have been excavated. Work is ongoing to recover the remaining fifty bodies.

This is a Civic and Social Literacy Program of the PA Forward Initiative.

Image result for paws for reading"PAWS for Reading is a program that allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog (or cat, or bunny!) in order to improve reading and communication skills. Children read individually to trained therapy pets (and their handlers) in schools, libraries, or other settings where they can feel comfortable and confident — and have fun! After all, a dog will not correct them or make them feel awkward if they stumble."

Middletown Free Library is a participating library in PAWS for Reading program! We have enough spaces per visit for 12 kids/readers. We recommend ages 5+ (or any one who can read aloud), but younger siblings can join!

Fall Dates for PAWS for Reading:

Wednesdays @ 6:30pm

November 1

December 6

Saturdays @ 2pm

November 4

December 9

Readers are limited to 10 minutes of reading aloud to a pet, but can read on their own or color while waiting. Register to reserve a spot for your young reader using his/her name. Click on the date you'd like to attend and fill out the form for your child. Click "Add Guest" to add spot(s) for siblings.

The 10-minute time slots will be done on a first come, first to sign up on site at the library on the day of the visit.

If you register but do not show-up without notice, you will forfeit any future sign-ups for this program.

Those on our wait list are welcome to come and take any open space that may happen from no-shows.

According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, an estimated 44 million Americans provide unpaid care to older people and adults with disabilities who live in the community. Many caregivers do not feel prepared for this role and were not expecting to find themselves in this role.

At Wayfarers Counseling (https://www.wayfarerscounseling.com/), Laurie and Carol have a special interest in care for caregivers. In their work, they have seen firsthand the emotional toll that being a caregiver can have on individuals and families. They have also seen the positive impact of adequate self-care, support and education. They know it is a challenge. Caregivers often don’t have the time or the resources to access ongoing psychotherapy.

During these two hours, you will receive relevant education including the following:

  •  You are not alone: introduction of participants and current statistics on caregiving
  •  How did I get here? What the caregiver role can look like
  •  Everything has changed: Navigating family dynamics
  •  What about me? Why self-care is important and what it looks like
  •  Where do we go from here? Sharing strategies from participants and offering available community resources.

The workshop is FREE and will be held in the Library's 2nd floor meeting room. There is no elevator.

Registration is required. We must have at least 10 confirmed registrations by Oct. 28 for the program to be held.

Music of the West African Kora

For kids ages 7 and up!

Saturday, November 4 @ 11 AM

Registration is not required!

Sean Gaskell will give a performance and educational demonstration on the 21 stringed West African Kora.  He will feature traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the kora’s musical repertoire in addition to some of his own personal compositions.

The Kora is native to the Mande peoples who live within the countries of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau. The music is traditionally played by oral and musical historians known as Griots (Gree-ohs). The Kora is a melodic and seemingly peaceful instrument, which is somewhat contrary to its musical repertoire. Many songs tell ancient stories of war and hardship, while others praise people of high political status and those who helped expand the Mande Empire. While the Kora is only 300 years old, some commonly played songs can be traced back 800 years to the Mande empires' founding. Gaskell has studied extensively under the instruction of Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh of Brikama, The Gambia, and Kane Mathis of Brooklyn, NY. Gaskell has been featured at numerous festivals in the US, Gambia, and Senegal.

The Friends of the Marple Library will present a program titled Duet du Jardin, a Baroque Chamber Concert featuring Clif Anderson, Bass and Edward Ziegman, Bassoon on Sunday, November 5 at 2:00 pm in the lower level community room.

The program will focus on the genius of Baroque composers and present works by Baroque composers, Georg Telemann, Friedrich Erbach, Joseph B. de Boismortier, and the late Romantic composer Paul Hindemith.  Perhaps no other period in the history of classical music offers the audience a more satisfying experience than the unique joy, and the bubbling optimistic energy of the Baroque period. Perhaps no other two instruments could better present this enjoyable music than a Bass and Bassoon.  This program is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the concert so all may meet the artists.
