SWARTHMORE PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS:
DIRTY PICTURES: A BRIEF LOOK AT ART CENSORSHIP

Wednesday, December 2, 2009 2:00 pm

Presented by NANCY HELLER, Ph.D
.Professor of Modern Art History, the University of the Arts

There has been some sort of art censorship ever since there's been art. But a group of artworks that caused tremendous controversy in the U.S. during the late 1980s and 90s sparked the so-called Culture Wars, which continue to affect the arts today. This lavishly illustrated talk will focus on now-notorious works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Dread Scott Tyler, Chris Ofili, Maya Lin, and Richard Serra, placing them into a larger historical/political/economic context.

This program is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Register at the Swarthmore Public Library, Call 610-543-0436 or email swarthmore@delco.lib.pa.us Visit Our Website
