This program was previously scheduled for Tues., May 23 but was postponed due to the prediction of rain for that day.

You must schedule your appointment by 9:00 p.m. on Mon., May 22 to participate.

CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them. Did you know that a proper fit in your car can greatly increase not only your safety but also the safety of others?

Three quick examples underscore the importance of road safety to the CarFit program, which reviews twelve key areas of the driver's fit to the personal vehicle.

  1. Example one: Knowing how to properly adjust one's mirrors can greatly minimize blind spots for drivers who may wish to change lanes.
  2. Example two: Good foot positioning on the gas and brake pedals is important. If the driver is reaching with his or her toes to press on the pedals, it can cause fatigue in one's leg and slowed reaction times.
  3. Example three: Drivers run a risk of serious injury if they are sitting closer than 10 inches to the steering wheel.

Sign up for your free individual 20-minute appointment at the Upper Darby/Sellers Library Reference Desk or by calling 610-789-4440. Appointments will be conducted by a trained CarFit technician from the Delaware County Transportation Management Association (DCTMA).

When you arrive for your appointment, please pull into the designated area of the library's parking lot.

For more information on the CarFit program, please go to www.car-fit.org.

Chair Tai Chi -“Tai Chi Chih©”

Every Thursday - May 25 to June 29th
at 2:00 pm

Interested participants will be introduced to “Tai Chi Chih©”, a moving meditation. It is easy to learn, and doesn’t require a particular level of physical fitness or coordination.  Consisting of 19 movements and one pose, TCC attracts  the widest audience because even those with physical limitations can participate, performing the movements while seated.  During the six one hour sessions, participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice, basic movements while seated, with an accredited Tai Chi Chih teacher, Sr. Christa Marie Thompson.
The body of high quality medical evidence providing sound arguments for practicing TCC is growing along with TV, newspaper, magazine, and “Web” accounts of the wide ranging health benefits  regular practitioners have gained.
Studies linking TCC to positive changes in all of the following:
Arthritis                                                COPD
Depression & Anxiety                        Immune System
General Health                                   Increased Energy
Healthy Aging                                     Pain Relief
Healthy Weight                                  Peace and Joy

"PAWS for Reading is a program that allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog (or cat, or bunny!) in order to improve reading and communication skills. Children read individually to trained therapy pets (and their handlers) in schools, libraries, or other settings where they can feel comfortable and confident — and have fun! After all, a dog will not correct them or make them feel awkward if they stumble."

MFL is now a participating library in PAWS for Reading program! We have enough spaces per visit for 12 kids/readers. We recommend ages 5+ (or any one who can read aloud).

Dates for PAWS for Reading:

Wednesday, June 7 @ 6:30pm

Saturday, June 10 @ 2pm

Readers are limited to 10 minutes of reading aloud to a pet, but can read on their own or color while waiting. Register to reserve a spot for your young reader using his/her name. Click "Add Guest" to add spot(s) for siblings. Click on the dates above to go to that date's registration page.

The 10-minute time slots will be done on a first come, first to sign up on site at the library on the day of the visit.

If you register but do not show-up without notice, you will forfeit any future sign-ups for this program.

Those on our wait list are welcome to come and take any open space that may happen from no-shows.

This program is sponsored and made possible by Media Veterinary Hospital!

Keeping it in the Family.

Parent - child writing duos are an increasingly common phenomenom.  We're taking a look at two of these more recent pairs.  First up, Hilma and Meg Wolitzer.

The lives of three very different women--Lissy, ... Michelle; and Angela ...--intersect over the course of a summer in the Hamptons as  they find their reading choices changing their lives forever.

George Pagano and his teammate Caitlin Miller rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in the 2015 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. They left from La Gomera in the Canary Islands and travelled 3000 miles to Antigua in the Caribbean. They were a self-sustaining boat and received no assistance in their crossing, which took 2 months. They left the Canaries in December 2015 and arrived in Antigua in February of 2016. They set the World Records for fastest and youngest mixed pair to row across the Atlantic. In this presentation, George will show two videos, one at the beginning of the presentation and one at the end. They will give the audience a good idea of his ocean rowing journey and highlight key events (the hurricane, the sea life, rowing at night). There will be time for questions at the end.

Aston Public Library
presents

The Ridley Township Public Library is offering a free Basic Meditation Workshop led by Rich Conti from the Schoolhouse Center Meditation Group. Participants are free to stay for the entire 2 hours, or may choose to leave after 1 hour or more. In this workshop,  you will learn all you need to practice meditation on your own, at home.

Meditation requires no extensive training, preparation or effort. It is simple, easy and anyone can do it. A simple commitment of a few minutes a day can make a real difference in a person’s life by helping to clear the mind and reduce stress. The best way to learn about meditation is for someone to show you what to do and how to do it.
