ent_saxaphone 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM JAZZ     Tell a Friend

Don't know your Bebop from your Boogie Woogie? Eastham Public Library presents a six-week music series showcasing America's unique contribution to the world of music, Jazz: Its Roots & Branches. Understanding America's Music, every Thursday evening at 7:00 PM from April 6 through May 11. The story of jazz is that of a constantly shifting synthesis of European conventions and African traditions continually creating new sounds and new sensibilities. The series begins on April 6 with a concert by the renowned jazz band of Nauset Regional High School and then continues on April 13 with the first of five performances by exceptional musicians who are experts in their musical styles and will talk us through what makes the Blues the Blues or propels the beat in Latin jazz, all the way from Ragtime to Fusion with that eminently danceable Swing in between. All of the events are free and open to the public and generously sponsored by Friends of the Eastham Library.

The Nauset Regional High School Jazz Band will perform on April 6. The students in the Jazz program at Nauset Regional High School experience a wide variety of music, including funk, swing, blues, Latin and rock and a wide sampling of historically significant literature in the jazz genre. The band appears regularly at state and regional festivals and, every year, many of its players are selected for honor ensembles.

The annual Peace Essay Awards and readings is sponsored by the Cape Cod Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in dcoordination with English faculty at Nauset Regional High School.  There three winning essays per grades 9, 10, and 11, with awards amounting to $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and two $10 gift certificates to Ben and Jerry's for third place.

The topic this year is "As Americans, how can this Latin phrase, E puribus unum, inspire and guide us to remove the label of "other" and build bridges of tolerance, understanding and caring within our country, communities, schools and our own neighborhoods?  Awardees, family of the awardees, members of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and faculty will all be invited to attend. A brief reception will follow the awards and readings. Usually we have an "ice cream social", but we would abide by whatever refreshment restrictions the Library has!!!!  We can also have the event on the evenings of either May17,  May 23, 24 or 25th.  Please let me knowif I need to make a separate request for  these alternative options. Our preference would be May 16th.  Rev. kate Epperly, Coordinator, CCFOR 508-209-1005  We wish to use both Turner rooms A and B but I couldn't get the online calendar to accept the request.
