Works by Henry and Darlene Moore - May Exhibit
Paintings and Photographs
War Protester Photo by Henry MooreEastham residents, Henry and Darlene Moore combine talents for their May exhibition.  Henry, a fine art black and white photographer, will be exhibiting works from his book, “In Retrospect”, a collection of documentary/street photography from 1969 - 2011. This exciting collection of noteworthy historical events and personalities, most of which was shot on assignment for NBC and CBS News, will be offered as a First Printing-Limited Edition.  A graduate of The Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Henry’s career has included a wide variety of opportunities in both commercial and fine art photography.

Darlene Moore PaintingDarlene has been a life-long artist. As a young girl, Darlene was fascinated by the painters she saw on Commercial Street in Provincetown. This early influence had a profound effect on Darlene’s creative interests. Her first oil painting was a seascape at age eleven.  Darlene’s formal instruction began at The University of Hartford’s School of Art, and she has gone on to study with William Davis, Joseph McGurl and Lois Griffel. Darlene prefers to work plain air throughout the Outer Cape region.  Darlene has exhibited with the Eastham Painters Guild, The Brophy Gallery and the Cultural Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The annual Peace Essay Awards and readings is sponsored by the Cape Cod Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in dcoordination with English faculty at Nauset Regional High School.  There three winning essays per grades 9, 10, and 11, with awards amounting to $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and two $10 gift certificates to Ben and Jerry's for third place.

The topic this year is "As Americans, how can this Latin phrase, E puribus unum, inspire and guide us to remove the label of "other" and build bridges of tolerance, understanding and caring within our country, communities, schools and our own neighborhoods?  Awardees, family of the awardees, members of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and faculty will all be invited to attend. A brief reception will follow the awards and readings. Usually we have an "ice cream social", but we would abide by whatever refreshment restrictions the Library has!!!!  We can also have the event on the evenings of either May17,  May 23, 24 or 25th.  Please let me knowif I need to make a separate request for  these alternative options. Our preference would be May 16th.  Rev. kate Epperly, Coordinator, CCFOR 508-209-1005  We wish to use both Turner rooms A and B but I couldn't get the online calendar to accept the request.

Gardening with Native Plants: Why It Matters

A talk for the Eastham Public Library September 22, 2017

Claudia Thompson
Founder, Grow Native Massachusetts

What can each of us do to make the world a better place, and especially to improve the health of our shared ecosystem? It starts with native plants and how we steward all of our lands—big or small. In this program, Claudia will give us an overview of the essential role of native plants to ecosystem health— starting with the concept of co-evolution between plants and animals, and ending with a tour of her 7,000 square foot garden in Cambridge, MA. She will explain the differences among native, naturalized, and invasive plants; and explore the food web that links plants to insects to birds, wildlife, and humans. Using her garden as a case study, we will learn about the essential principles for designing gardens that are places of both beauty and biodiversity. This includes working with local ecology, thinking about plant communities, and creating habitat for birds, butterflies, and wildlife. By the end of the program, you will "get" why native plants are so important, understand why every garden matters to life all around, and walk away with lots of ideas about how you can make a big difference right at home!

Claudia’s Biography:

Ms. Thompson is the President of Grow Native Massachusetts, an organization that she founded in 2010 as the culmination of an extensive career in the environmental sector. She began her career in the 1970s as a teacher and environmental educator committed to getting students out into the field, and she helped to develop middle school programs at Thompson Island in Boston Harbor. In recent decades, she served as the Director of Education for the Appalachian Mountain Club, Director of Drumlin Farm for Mass Audubon, and worked for several other environmental organizations. She was a board member for the New England Wild Flower Society from 1996 to 2005. Her motivation for starting Grow Native Massachusetts comes from her conviction that the wise stewardship of our lands begins at home, and that our future rests upon a 21st century attitude toward conservation that embraces our role in this interconnected ecosystem. We must change the paradigm of thinking of the natural world as separate from our human activity. Claudia’s happiest moments are spent in her own gardens, watching a diverse array of hawks, migrating songbirds, and even rare species such as woodcocks— all taking sustenance and utilizing the habitat she and her husband have created on a relatively small parcel in urban Cambridge.
