The Great Books Discussion Group will begin its thirty-sixth year on September 1, 2010. The group meets the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. Its purpose is to understand and appreciate great writing through the sharing of ideas.
The only requirement for attending a Great Books meeting is that you read the selection to be discussed. There is no charge and no pre-registration. You need not attend all the meetings, but you will find the discussions more interesting if you come to as many meetings as possible.
We discuss only the assigned readings (or those read previously) so that all participants will be familiar with the material. We do not refer to or quote sources other than the text itself but seek to understand the writings through our own efforts.

The Molly Bish Center, in collaboration with the Worcester County Elder Abuse Roundtable are hosting their Fall 2010 seminar entitled Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, at the Worcester Public Library from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m on October 16th. This seminar highlights the mental, physical and financial components grandparents who are raising their grandchildren must deal with and raise awareness within the community of how common this family dynamic is becoming. The day will begin with Dr. Robert Kirk from CARE (Child Advocacy Resources and Education), Inc. who will give the keynote, Advocating for Your Grandchild with Special Needs. Dr. Kirk, a licensed psychologist, has extensive experience in schools settings, training child caregivers how to best advocate for their child/grandchild and what the steps in the process are. He will discuss the educational changes that have occurred in teaching children with developmental disabilities and how to best advocate for their needs. Also joining us will be Gregory Mills from the Social Security Administration to explain a number of financial benefits available to grandparents who are raising grandchildren that are not being utilized and how they can receive services in Knowing your Financial Benefit Options. The seminar will conclude with a panel discussion with representatives from the Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. The representatives will provide information from the Listening and Learning tour conducted in various cities and towns across the state of Massachusetts, discuss the results and how those results will impact current legislation as well as explain the role of the commission in advocating for grandparents who are raising grandchildren.
