    Contact: Wendy Valentine   617-624-8164   wvalentine@supportunitedway.org

United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley (“United Way”) and the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care are holding a public Technical Assistance and Support Session for early education programs and providers interested in applying for the 2015 QRIS Program Quality Improvement Grant. In 2014 this project awarded over $2,000,000 in grants to 300 programs and providers across Massachusetts to enhance outcomes for all children in Massachusetts, especially those populations most at risk. This meeting is free and two hours in duration, primarily a presentation with a Question and Answer session. No refreshments are served. The purpose of this public meeting is to provide technical assistance support to local early childhood programs and providers who are applying for 2015 QRIS grants. It is one in a series of five similar meetings that will take place across the Commonwealth during the month of February 2015. This project is funded with federal Race to the Top – Early Learning Challenge Grant Funding and managed for the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care by United Way.

The purpose of the QRIS Program Quality Improvement Grants is to engage educators in program planning for quality improvements and to make direct program improvements, in pursuit of upward progress on the levels defined in the Massachusetts Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS) and ensure that children receive high quality early education experiences. This project contributes to the creation of higher quality early childhood environments and supports educators as they grow in their understanding of the importance and implementation of high quality environments. We give preference in the award of grants to programs that serve a high percentage of high needs children.

Rocksteady Roots of Reggae Music (documentary).  While everybody has heard the music of Bob Marley, the superstar of reggae, few people know that it was Rocksteady that developed the buoyant rhythms, promiment bass pulse, soulful vocals and socially concsious lyrics that gave reggae its power.  This film features a mix of studio recording sessions at Tuff Gong Studios, rarely seen archival footage from the period and interviews with the performers at home or at places on the island that had profound effects on their music and lives.  Drumming with Francesca Abbey.

On February 18th, Youth MOVE Massachusetts will be hosting a listening session for teens and young adults ages 13-20 on mental health and substance abuse services/supports. We want to hear what you think is working in Massachusetts and what areas need to be better!

Are there good supports in your school for students who have substance abuse problems? What has helped you, a family member, or a friend who has had a substance abuse issue and a mental health need at the same time? What do you think Massachusetts should be doing to help young people and families who face these challenges?

Event is free.  Please RSVP to lproulx@ppal.net

The Curator-in-Training program is currently being offered for The Seven Hills Foundation ASPiRE!'s CBDS participants in Worcester at 150 Goddard Memorial Drive. Curator-In-Training is a 11 week program that will run four times in 2015. It is a community and interactive based class that incorporates the rich experience of visiting galleries and museums in combination with lectures, videos and projects about art history, design, and concept/theme development. In turn, each class then develops a theme and follows steps for creating a successful art exhibition. With this experience each participant is enabled to make informed and responsible decisions, while fostering an appreciation for art, self-expression and creativity. This program is being funded by the Worcester Arts Council and we have have four art exhibits sceduled for the 2nd floor of the WPL Main Building in 2015. We would like to have class at the library to foster community intergration and open our lectures and projects to the public while having a dymamic and resourceful discussion space.

During our time at WPL we will have a slide show and lecture on Art History/Design and an art project relating to the theme. We also will be discussing the main objective and challenges of curating an artshow.

The Buffalo Soldiers (documentary).  From the Indian War to the Spanish-American War, relive the heroism, drama and adventure of the legend of the Buffalo Soldier.  This outstanding documentary, which won the CINE Golden Eagle Award and the Bronze Cindy Award, chronicles the history and accomplishments of the all-black cavalries and infantries during the last half of the 19th century.  Named the "Buffalo Soldiers" by their Cheyenne enemies, these brave and proud soldiers played an important role in the pacification and settlement of the American West, as well as many other military adventures in the 1800's.  Filmed on location where it actually happened 100 years ago, and utilizing a rare collection of authentic Buffalo Soldier photographs -- the largest collection of its kind ever assembled -- the amazing story of the Buffalo Soldier is brought to life for the enjoyment of generations to come.  This production also includes the speech by General Colin Powell, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, dedicating the Buffalo Soldier Memorial at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, finally recognizing the substantial contribution to our national heritage.  (Trooper Joe Glover will do a live presentation about the Buffalo Soldiers and a skit before the documentary.)

    Contact: Derek Lirange   (508)852-6400   staff@treeworcester.org

In March of 2014 Worcester Tree Initiative hosted a community discussion on Urban Orchards in Worcester. The discussion was fruitful in a number of ways and in the 9 months since Worcester has seen the creation of three new urban orchards/groves, one on Jaques Ave off of Chandler St. and another at the top of Newton Hill, adjacent to Elm Park, and the third in Dodge Park on Randolph Rd.

In this discussion Worcester Tree Initiative would like to share about what we learned in the process of planning and planting these urban orchards with a brief presentation, as well as continue the discussion. We encourage anyone with a desire to see more food growing within the city limits to join the conversation and bring their thoughts to the table.
