The Massachusetts Viral Hepatitis Coalition continues its open forums on Beating HCV: Opportunities and Challenges for Treating Hepatitis C in Massachusetts.  HCV is currently taking a dramatic toll on the health of Massachusetts’ residents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, acute cases of HCV in Massachusetts between 2009 and 2013 increased 1200%. In 2013, there were nearly 8,000 reported HCV diagnoses reported. While new research has led to the development of treatments that can effectively cure HCV, Massachusetts still faces significant challenges in its battle to turn the tide on this disease. This meeting will continue to examine the impact of HCV in Massachusetts along with current opportunities and challenges to expanding access to HCV prevention, screening, and treatment. All participants will be invited to hear committee updates and engage in an open discussion, facilitated by the coalition organizers.

The WIDA Early English Language Development Standards (E-ELD) were specifically developed to help support the unique language needs of Dual Language Learners (DLLs), ages 2.5-5.5 years of age, who are in the process of learning more than one language prior to Kindergarten entry.  As language learning occurs across all areas of standards-based curricula, it is critical that early childhood programs use language standards in conjunction with Early Learning Standards when supporting, instructing, and assessing DLLs.  This course, second in a series of three modules, addresses the importance of home language, school readiness, socio-cultural contexts, and developmentally appropriate academic language.  Participants will learn how to integrate the E-ELD with EEC Standards into a play based curriculum that supports DLL’s language development.

Prerequisite:  This is part 2 of a 3 part series.  Participants must have completed Introduction to the WIDA Early English Language Development (E-ELD) Standards, 2.5-5.5 years old - Module 1.

You can help by volunteering to become a Special Education Surrogate Parent (SESP) for a student, in the custody of the state, that requires special education supports and whose parents are unknown or unavailable. These children depend on SESPs to protect their legal right to a free and appropriate education.

SESPs serve as appointed decision makers that have the legal authority of a parent or legal guardian to attend and participate in special education team meetings, approve or reject Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and if necessary, file complaints or appeals. On average, the time commitment is only 30-40 hours a year.

RTSC host FREE Orientation Trainings throughout the state where you will learn about the role of an SESP, how traumatic experiences can impact learning, and how to incorporate the appropriate supports into the IEP. Register to attend this training or visit our website at www.fcsn.org/rtsc/ to view our current training schedule for other opportunities.

The Worcester Women's Oral History Project (WWOHP) records, collects, and shares the personal and historical memories of women from the greater Worcester area. To date over 300 oral histories have been gathered. The permanent repository for these files is the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at Radcliffe Institute of Harvard University. This gathering is WWOHP's annual event.
