misc_none Freedom's Agenda: African American Petitions to the Massachusetts Government 1600-1900 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Exhibit presented by William Francis Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Beginning in the colonial period African Americans have submitted thousands of petitions to the Massachusetts government. Many highlight issues that became central to the modern civil rights movement. The petitions are preserved in the Massachusetts Archives and were indentified through a joint project with Harvard University. They bear the names of many prominent abolitionists, black and white, including Sojourner Truth, William Cooper Nell, Lewis Hayden, William Lloyd Garrison and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Visit the exhibit during library hours from February 27 - March 27 on the first floor of the Main Library.

This workshop provides family support and early education and care professionals with the information to understand, recognize and respond effectively to situations in which children may be at risk for abuse and neglect. It will provide an understanding of the different forms of child maltreatment and its impact on children. A major emphasis of the workshop is to identify ways that family support and early education and care programs and staff can support the development of protective factors in families that are effective in preventing child abuse and neglect as well as enhancing the optimal development of children. The different forms of child maltreatment (neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse) are described and participants explore ways to enhance the safety of children while supporting families when these situations exist.  Finally, participants explore their roles as mandated reporters. A special emphasis is placed on how to remain connected and supportive to families in situations where a referral to protective services is necessary.

CHL is an non-profit organization located in central Massachusetts. Community Healthlink is committed to promoting, restoring, and maintaining the physical health, mental health and dignity of adults, children and families in Central Massachusetts who are experiencing mental illness, addiction or homelessness.  Community Healthlink’s services are grounded in the principles of recovery and the belief that every person has the right to choose his or her own recovery path. Community Healthlink uses evidence-based practices and relevant state-of-the-art research aimed at improving the lives of our consumers.

CHL has been asked to host 4 family voice forums over the next year in order to hear from the families we serve, specifically for families who are currently or have been involved in CBHI (Child Behavioral Health Initiative) services. Family Voice Forums are an opportunity to hear from caregivers and young adults regarding their experience with the behavioral health system. Their input provides a critical understanding to the areas of strength and need within the service delivery system. Older youth and caregivers who have had experiences with any of the CBHI services are encouraged to participate. The feedback and themes generated from these meetings will be shared with MassHealth and other stakeholders.

National Grid reps on site to discuss:

  •          Payment plans
  •          Budgets
  •          Protections
  •          Arrears Management Program
  •          LIHEAP Fuel Assistance
  •          Referrals to Agencies

We also bring other assistance agencies – The agencies below participated in our last event we held in October and we would expect that they would participate again:

  •          Worcester Community Action Council (fuel assistance)
  •          United Way
  •          Salvation Army
