The WIDA Early English Language Development Standards (E-ELD) were specifically developed to help support the unique language needs of Dual Language Learners (DLLs), ages 2.5-5.5 years of age, who are in the process of learning more than one language prior to Kindergarten entry.  As language learning occurs across all areas of standards-based curricula, it is critical that early childhood programs use language standards in conjunction with Early Learning Standards when supporting, instructing, and assessing DLLs.  This course, second in a series of three modules, addresses the importance of home language, school readiness, socio-cultural contexts, and developmentally appropriate academic language.  Participants will learn how to integrate the E-ELD with EEC Standards into a play based curriculum that supports DLL’s language development.

Prerequisite:  This is part 2 of a 3 part series.  Participants must have completed Introduction to the WIDA Early English Language Development (E-ELD) Standards, 2.5-5.5 years old - Module 1.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.  The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

This is a 2-Day, 8 Hour Course and full attendance is required for certification.  This course is provided Free of Charge by Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services in association with Federal Funind by SAMHSA.  This course is intended for those 18 and over.

CHL is an non-profit organization located in central Massachusetts. Community Healthlink is committed to promoting, restoring, and maintaining the physical health, mental health and dignity of adults, children and families in Central Massachusetts who are experiencing mental illness, addiction or homelessness.  Community Healthlink’s services are grounded in the principles of recovery and the belief that every person has the right to choose his or her own recovery path. Community Healthlink uses evidence-based practices and relevant state-of-the-art research aimed at improving the lives of our consumers.

CHL has been asked to host 4 family voice forums over the next year in order to hear from the families we serve, specifically for families who are currently or have been involved in CBHI (Child Behavioral Health Initiative) services. Family Voice Forums are an opportunity to hear from caregivers and young adults regarding their experience with the behavioral health system. Their input provides a critical understanding to the areas of strength and need within the service delivery system. Older youth and caregivers who have had experiences with any of the CBHI services are encouraged to participate. The feedback and themes generated from these meetings will be shared with MassHealth and other stakeholders.

You can help by volunteering to become a Special Education Surrogate Parent (SESP) for a student, in the custody of the state, that requires special education supports and whose parents are unknown or unavailable. These children depend on SESPs to protect their legal right to a free and appropriate education.

SESPs serve as appointed decision makers that have the legal authority of a parent or legal guardian to attend and participate in special education team meetings, approve or reject Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and if necessary, file complaints or appeals. On average, the time commitment is only 30-40 hours a year.

RTSC host FREE Orientation Trainings throughout the state where you will learn about the role of an SESP, how traumatic experiences can impact learning, and how to incorporate the appropriate supports into the IEP. Register to attend this training or visit our website at www.fcsn.org/rtsc/ to view our current training schedule for other opportunities.

FCCERS-Spanish.  Here is a description: The Family Child Care Environmental Rating Scale (FCCERS) is a valid and reliable tool for measuring the quality of a family child care program. Resulting data can be used to make decisions and plans for program improvement as well as advancement on the Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS). Participants will become familiar with the FCCERS tool, the specific items it measures, and how to implement it in a family child care setting. Examples of recommended practices and useful strategies for planning program improvements will be shared.

The Arnett caregiver Interaction Scale is designed to measure the emotional tone, disciplinary style, and the responsiveness of the educator. During this training, participants will review the organization and content of the Interaction Scale, practice using the tool as a self-assessment measure, and utilize the results to identify areas for improvement. Use of these tools in this manner serves to help educators plan programs that improve the environment and increase positive interactions with children.

Strengthening Families Self-Assessment includes: Self-Assessment, Protective Factors Survey, and Staff Survey. This tool is required for center-based/ school based, FCC, and Afterschool/Out of School Time Programs participating in QRIS at Level 2.

The protective factors provide both a framework and an interrelated approach to serving families and reducing incidences of child abuse and neglect. The first part of this training will focus on providing information and knowledge for those who are not familiar with the Strengthening Families protective factors. Participants will understand the Strengthening Families protective factors and the seven key strategies that support the presence of protective factors.

In the second part, participants will learn about the Parent Café model as a tool for parent engagement. Parent Cafés are being used across the country as effective vehicles for engaging parents, families, and communities in conversations that matter. Many states, like Massachusetts, who are implementing the Strengthening Families framework, use Parent Cafés to engage parents and families in discussions on how to support the development of the five strengthening families’ protective factors that make their families strong. Parent Cafés are fun, engaging, inclusive and culturally inclusive. They also provide a wonderful opportunity to hear parent and family voices and develop parent and family leadership in organizations and communities. Participants will be prepared to host and support delivery of Parent Café activities.
