Local Musicians Night
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

There’s a lot of underground music happening in Worcester, and now it’s coming to a library near you!  Each night, two local bands play, and no cover charge! All ages are welcome.

Tonight's Lineup:  Instar and Privacy Papers

Instar is the solo drone project of Nick Pagan, one half of musique concrete duo Venerate the Plough.  Nick invokes deep, gentle soundscapes that tease the limit of feedback, assisted with contact microphones, field recordings, and an assortment of organ loops.

The Privacy Papers (PPs) play music for funsies, learning new instruments through the power of friendship and blindly praising each other.  Their sacred pact of refraining from honing individual music skills outside of official basement rehearsals remains intact since their inception.  The PPs enjoy quiet parties, receiving hugs from little kids, being comfortable, smelling babies, ice cream, the Ninja Turtles, and the movie Goodburger.  Stay tuned (they technically aren't) for coffee shop punk rock!

The Internet of Things and Cybersecurity Challenges
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

The Internet has exploded from your computer onto devices everywhere, including thermostats, lightbulbs, bathroom scales, and digital companions.
All these inter-networked devices are known as the Internet of Things (IoT).Unfortunately, the more devices we connect to the Internet, the more potential
for cybersecurity and privacy issues. We’ll talk about the inherent risks, and some possible approaches to address these problems.

This program is part of the Explore Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference exhibit at the Worcester Public Library through March 9, 2018.

Explore Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference was organized by the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive
Learning, the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office, the Lunar and Planetary Institute and the Afterschool Alliance.
This project was made possible through the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation. The Worcester Public Library
is proud to partner with the Eureka! program at Girls Inc. of Worcester and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

A Musical Taste of Irish Culture
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Discover Irish culture during this live musical performance by Tim Loftus. Through traditional tunes, stories, and slide presentations, he'll shed the shillelagh Irish of green beer, fake accents, and leprechauns to reveal some real Irish culture. Tim will be accompanied by Norah Garvey, Irish step-dancer.

During his performance you’ll also discover how the banjo, a traditional African instrument, became so popular in traditional Irish bands; what the connection is between the Native American Choctaws and the Irish potato famine of the 1840s; and learn about the blind Irish harpist Turlough O"Carolan's tune Si Bheag, Si Mhor, the prettiest tune ever written.

Tim is an instrumentalist in the local traditional Irish bands of Banda Gan Anim and The Doolin Lads, and is a frequent guest musician for the Quinebaug Valley Singers and at living assistance communities. During the day Tim is an environmental chemist. He resides in North Oxford with his rosemary plant.

History Unfolded: Holocaust Remembrance Event
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

What did Americans know about the Holocaust as it was unfolding in the 1930s and 40s? A new initiative at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum called "History Unfolded" asks people across the United States to research local newspaper coverage of key events related to the Holocaust and to add news articles to a growing online database. This winter, students at Clark University participated in this project by investigating newspapers in Worcester and surrounding towns. Their professor, Dr. Rebecca Carter-Chand, will present their findings and discuss the links between local history and global events.

Dr. Rebecca Carter-Chand is Visiting Professor of History at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. She received a PhD in History at the University of Toronto in 2016 and is a former fellow at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Sibshop
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Through a grant  from the Massachusetts Developmental Disability Council, HMEA’s Autism Resource Central is offering a one day free conference for parents at the library on March 19th. Parents will be given an opportunity, at that time, to sign up their children for a Sibshop experience for siblings ages 7-16 on April 19th during School vacation .  Sibshop portion makes this a comprehenisve family education program.

Brothers and  Sisters  often have  questions and concerns  about their sibling . Sibshops  address the unique challenges these special  siblings face in a fun format including games and food!  This nationally acclaimed program recognizes that siblings are the family member who will have the longest-lasting relationship with a person with a disability. However siblings often lack the opportunity to discuss their feelings about the difference in their family and how disability impacts their lives .Sibshop will be  facilitated by Center staff who are trained Sibshop providers, with over 12 years of experience with siblings.
