Book Cover Redesign Contest!
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

This summer, we’re asking our teens to see if they can redesign those book covers to make them EVEN MORE APPEALING. Choose a favorite book and make a new cover for it – illustrate it, collage it, photograph it, whatever art medium you like!

You can submit your finished artwork either to librarian Rachel in the Youth Services department, or online via an email to rmoir@mywpl.org. Be sure to include your name, age, school, the title and author of the book you are redesigning, and a phone number or email address where we can contact you! We will display the entries in the teen room starting at the end of August, and our panel of judges will pick one lucky winner – who gets their choice of either the program Clip Paint Studio pro (formerly known as Manga Studio) or a $25 VISA giftcard! Deadline is August 19th at 5:30 pm.

Volunteer to Become a Special Education Surrogate Parent
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Are you interested in supporting students in your community?  You can help by volunteering to become a Special Education Surrogate Parent (SESP) for a student in state care that requires special education supports and whose parents are unknown or unavailable. These children depend on SESPs to protect their legal right to a free and appropriate education.

SESPs serve as appointed decision makers that have the legal authority of a parent or legal guardian to attend and participate in special education team meetings, approve or reject Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and if necessary, file complains or appeals. On average, the time commitment is only 30-40 hours a year.

RTSC hosts FREE Orientation Trainings throughout the state where you will learn about the role of an SESP, how traumatic experiences can impact learning and how to incorporate the appropriate supports into the IEP. Register to attend this training or visit our website at www.fcsn.org/rtsc/ to view our current training schedule for other opportunities.

Registration is required.

You can register online at http://fcsn.org/rtsc/orientations/ or contact Danielle Hardin at dhardin@fcsn.org or 617-399-8342. (PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CONTACT PHONE NUMBER.)

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

What can you do when a police officer stops you? What are your rights at the voting booth? What if ICE knocks on your door? What if you’re part of a protest? Join Chris Robarge, the Central Ma Field Coordinator for the ACLU of Massachusetts, as he helps you navigate the ins and outs of these and other times where you need to Know Your Rights.

Chris Robarge is based in Worcester, and has recently been focused on police practices, voting rights, and free speech rights for all, including the poor. He first became involved as an activist in the battle for marriage equality in 2005. Later, he was a part of the Occupy movement in Worcester, Boston, and throughout New England. He formerly served as vice-chair of the Citizen Advisory Council for the City of Worcester, looking to help recruit under-represented communities into board and commission seats involved in city government. He has also worked with the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts as a Disaster Services Coordinator.

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Join Worcester authors James DiReda and Jack Maroney and School Safety Director Robert Pezzella as they discuss their experiences leading to and during the writing of their biographical tale of substance abuse addiction and recovery East Side of Addiction.

East Side of Addiction is an altogether real and gritty depiction of a middle class Worcester neighborhood's descent into addiction and the collateral damage suffered by their families and the community at large. The book narrates an against-all-odds themed story, written to give hope to a generation devastated by the current opioid epidemic.

Co-author Jack Maroney is now the CEO of Recovery Centers of America in Westminster, MA and President of Creative Addiction Recovery Estates, Inc. Dr. James DiReda is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and Director of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at Anna Maria College. Robert Pezzella is the Director of School Safety for the Worcester Public Schools.

Urban Planning with the People
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

This interactive presentation and discussion will explore ways that cities such as Worcester can include citizens in early stages and throughout the urban planning process.

Dr. Tom Conroy is the Chair and Associate Professor of Urban Studies at Worcester State University.  An urban historian by training with a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, both his scholarly work and community-engaged scholarship focuses on the idea of urban exclusion historically and contemporarily, and ways to redress it.  Urban exclusion refers to the variety of processes whereby people are disenfranchised in and by the cities in which they live and work.  He has recently co-authored "In Search of Opportunity:  Latino Men’s Path to Post-Secondary Education in Urban Massachusetts" and is a co-creator of the CitySpeak Initiative, a research- and arts-based approach to urban planning and community development.
