Soul Narrative: Reveal Your Voice
3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
This workshop is not really about teaching writing, as much as it is about creating a safe place for writers to write. To create and craft stories in their own voice without fear of judgement around style, syntax, or other parameters that could interfere with the content of the story itself. I work to help writers silence their inner critic and speak from a place of raw honesty.

The workshop is titled "Soul Narrative: Reveal Your Voice". Everyone has a voice. A true voice of their soul, which is often times silenced. Concealed by our own inner critic, other people's perceptions of who we are and life's circumstances and situations. These factors work to create an external and internal environment of masking and suppressing ourselves and actually knowing and having compassion for our own humanity. Through a series of writing prompts the writer will be able to shed these erroneous identities and express what they think and feel is true. In being able to tell their stories without fear, the writer can show their authentic voice. This exercise can lead to increased feelings of understanding, both of self and other, empowerment and capability.

The workshop are typically an hour and a half to two hours, depending on how many prompts and the number of people in the workshop. The number of participants ranges from 6-8 people, which affects the number of prompts. I begin with a brief introduction of who I am and how writing has affected my life and helped my sense of identity, leading to the creation of the workshop. Then we will start with the prompts. Once a prompt is given the writer writes by hand for fifteen minutes, then each writer takes turns reading their piece out loud.

The other writers can respond only by providing positive feedback; "The details painted a beautiful picture of what was happening and I could follow along.", "Your story was emotional and I connected with what was happening.", etc.

We do not need to be editors in this space!

Writing by hand is deliberate, as there are many proven benefits - increases learning comprehension, engages and stimulates the brain fully, calms the body and nerves, unleashes creativity, decreases depression and anxiety, and enhances focus.
