Looking Backward: The Future Seen from the Past

Tuesday November 12, 2019
6:30 PM until 7:30 PM

Presented by Hamish Lutris:

It’s 2019, a date that to many seems like it comes from a science fiction movie. We saw the 21st Century come without a Y2K meltdown, but the future still seems to hold both boundless promise, and mortal danger. Though much of what we would have expected- or hoped for- in the future never came to pass, other seemingly unforeseeable achievements and technologies have been attained, though at what many would think a high price.  How did we see the 21st Century in ages past? Hamish explores the visions of the future that we have held- some prophetic, others wacky, but always exciting and entertaining.

Hamish Lutris is an Associate Professor of History, Political Science, and Geography at Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut. He has worked in some of America’s premier natural and historical sites, leading hiking and historical programs. He has also lectured extensively in the United States, Europe, and Canada, presenting programs on wide-ranging historical topics, including Native American history, the Civil War, Scientific History, Social and Cultural history, World War I, World War II, and the American West.

Space is limited so registration is required beginning October 15 online or by calling the Reference Desk at 203-736-1482.
