Winter Reading Challenge

The Baldwin Library invites children, teens, and adults to participate in our 2022 Winter Reading Challenge! Winter Reading Challenge will begin Monday, January 3rd and will run through Thursday, March 31st.

Children and Teens: Read 15 minutes for at least 15 days of the month. The library will provide each reader with a fun, interactive log to fill in for each reading session. Fully completed logs can be turned in during the last week of each month, and each child/teen will be entered to win one of three monthly prizes!

Adults: A reading slip will be completed for each title read and entered in our monthly prize drawing for a chance to win a local gift card.

Book Cooks
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Young chefs of any age can join us for a monthly make-from-scratch cooking/baking program with a focus on delicious recipes, family time and fun! We'll even read a related story at the conclusion of the program! This program increases children's math, problem solving, vocabulary and literacy skills, all while expanding their culinary curiosity by cooking alongside an adult. January's program will be held via Zoom since will will all need to use our stoves. Registration required. A Zoom link will be sent to you prior to the program.

January's cooking theme: Better Breakfasts! Our recipe will be Easy Breakfast Pizza

Ingredients to have on hand: (1) 13.8 oz tube refrigerated pizza crust, olive oil, 8 eggs, milk, 6 pieces of bacon (or subtitutution of your choice), 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, or cheese of your choice), any vegetables of your choice (tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, etc.) salt and pepper

Kitchen supplies needed: sheet pan, rolling pin, pastry brush, small bowl, medium bowl, whisk, measuring cups, measuring spoons, medium skillet, large spoon

Picture Book Children's Choice Awards

Art with a Heart

Participants will be given paper and various art supplies to create paintings to be showcased by UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside hospitals in prominent locations throughout the hospital. Meet Author Lisa Fipps!

Lisa Fipps, author of the middle-grade novel, Starfish, will be joining our In Their Shoes Book Group for a one-hour virtual visit via Zoom! You won't want to miss this opportunity to hear about her road to writing her debut novel, which as been named one of School Library Journal's top middle-grade reads of 2021! You'll also have an opportunity to ask questions about...anything! Copies of Starfish will be available for pickup at the library if you would like to read the book before her virtual visit, but it is not a requirement to join the conversation! Everyone is welcome to register!

Dance the Story: Peter Pan with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre

Middle Grade Sculpting

Bouncing Babies and Books

Bring your baby (ages 0-2) to our morning storytime featuring stories, fun and engaging songs, rhymes, music and bubbles to conclude our program! Each registered family will receive their own book, musical instruments and rhyme and sing card to use during the program. All program supplies will be thoroughly cleaned for safe use. Return the supplies at the conclusion of the program and keep the rhyme and sing card to add to your collection! Please register for each session.

Teen Take or Make Craft

They’re back! Teens in Grades 6-12 can stop in the library to stay and make a craft here OR pick up a “to go” craft kit, complete with all of the supplies and instructions to make a creative teen craft! No registration required. 

Mondays: January 31, February 28 (TEENy Tiny Art Show), March 28 

February 28: TEENy Tiny Art Show: each craft kit includes a mini easel, 4x4 canvas, paint and brushes to create your own artistic creation to display at the library's mini art show! If you're taking a kit "to go," we ask that you return your completed artwork for our art show (we promise to return all art).

Yoga with Candace for Adults

Cost:  $5 paid to Candace

Relax and stretch with Candace, a seasoned Yoga instructor.  She will be teaching all levels of yoga for 8 weeks (January 10 - February 28).

Stop Motion Animation Workshop-Session One

In session one, we will watch examples of stop motion animation films dating back to 1906, work on storyboarding and plan short lists.
