Virtual Author Talk: Kate Beaton

Join us for an enlightening hour online with highly-acclaimed Kate Beaton, the New York Times bestselling author of Hark! A Vagrant! And Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands.

Beaton’s natural cartooning prowess is on full display as she draws colossal machinery and mammoth vehicles set against a sublime Albertan backdrop of wildlife, the Northern Lights, and the Rocky Mountains. Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands is more than a memoir, it’s also an untold story of Canada: a country that prides itself on its egalitarian ethos and natural beauty while simultaneously exploiting both the riches of its land and the humanity of its people.

About the Author: Kate Beaton was born and raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. After graduating from Mount Allison University with a double degree in History and Anthropology, she moved to Alberta in search of work that would allow her to pay down her student loans. During the years she spent out West, Beaton began creating webcomics under the name Hark! A Vagrant, quickly drawing a substantial following around the world. The collections of her landmark strip Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, Pops each spent several months on the New York Times graphic novel bestseller list, as well as appearing on best of the year lists from Time, The Washington Post, Vulture, NPR Books, and winning the Eisner, Ignatz, Harvey, and Doug Wright Awards. She has also published the picture books King Baby and The Princess and the Pony. Beaton lives in Cape Breton with her family.

Registration is required for this event:https://libraryc.org/grotonlibrary/25329/register  Recording will be available to view in the future.

GPL Book Group: Eagle Tree by Ned Hayes

Fourteen-year-old March Wong knows everything there is to know about trees. They are his passion and his obsession, even after his recent falls—and despite the state’s threat to take him away from his mother if she can’t keep him from getting hurt. But the young autistic boy cannot resist the captivating pull of the Pacific Northwest’s lush forests just outside his back door.

Intertwining themes of humanity and ecology, The Eagle Tree eloquently explores what it means to be part of a family, a society, and the natural world that surrounds and connects us.

Copies of the book will be available at the Circulation Desk.

You Can: The Basics of Home Canning

Want to learn the basics of home canning? Do you already know a little bit about canning but want to learn more? Have you tried your hand at water bath canning and now want to venture into pressure canning? Do you want to make the most of your garden produce and stretch your food budget?

This basic workshop will get you started in the world of canning. This is a non-cooking class, so no actual canning will be done on site. There will be handouts, take-home materials, and some recipe sampling.

Registration is required for this event, space is limited. Don't miss this wonderful event hosted by master instructor Dana Parfitt.

Don't Judge a Library by its Building: Library Architecture and Design

Don’t Judge a Library By its Building: Library Architecture & Design

There's more to a library than just shelves and books.  Careful thinking and planning has informed the interior and exterior design of libraries as they evolved from medieval stacks to modern community centers.  This program will explore the good, the bad and the amazingly innovative in library architecture, with a focus on the last century.
Our presenter is Jane Oneail, Founder and President of Culturally Curious.  Jane was leading tours at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston when she first began to appreciate the special magic that happens when people look at art together and share their genuine reactions and questions.  Jane holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

This program is hosted by Waterford Public Library and co-sponsored by Groton Public, Mystic & Noank, and The Otis Library of Norwich.

We have created a NEW book group for Millennials and Gen Z-ers ages 21-40. Finding your place in the world can be difficult, but you don’t have to do it alone! In this group we will socialize, try various activities or games and of course talk about books! This month the theme is "Re-Read!" Re-Read one of your favorites or give a hated novel a second change.

Programming may be affected or cancelled due to COVID-19.

Virtual Author: Brill Hawthorne

Are you committed to building an antiracist family environment for your children? Raising antiracist children is a noble goal for any parent, caregiver, or educator, but it can be hard to know where to start. Let Britt Hawthorne—a nationally recognized teacher and advocate—be your guide. Raising Antiracist Children acts as an interactive guide for strategically incorporating the tools of inclusivity into everyday life and parenting. In her book, Hawthorne breaks down antiracist parenting into four comprehensive sections and in this webinar you will learn about:

Healthy bodies—Establishing a safe and body-positive home environment to combat stereotypes and create boundaries.
Radical minds—Encouraging children to be agents of change, accompanied by scripts for teaching advocacy, giving and taking productive feedback, and becoming a co-conspirator for change.
Conscious shopping—Raising awareness of how local shopping can empower or hinder a community’s ability to thrive, and teaching readers of all ages how to create shopping habits that support their values.
Thriving communities—Acknowledging the personal power we have to shape our schools, towns, and worlds, accompanied by exercises for instigating change.
Raising Antiracist Children is a must-have, practical guide essential for parents and caregivers everywhere.

About the Author: Britt Hawthorne (they/she) is the author of the highly-anticipated, New York Times Bestseller, Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide (Simon Element, 2022). The book is an interactive guide for strategically incorporating the tools of inclusivity into everyday life and parenting and it received a starred review from Kirkus.

Britt is also an antiracist educator, teacher, speaker, visionary, and advocate committed to raising a generation of antiracist children by centering families of the global majority and fostering equitable learning environments for students and children of all ages and backgrounds. Britt’s work moves the idea of equity in education from a goal to reality. She partners with action-orientated educators to create classroom environments that are inclusive and equitable for all learners.

You must register for this event: https://libraryc.org/grotonlibrary/26073/register  The event will be recorded and available to view after the event.

Virtual Author Talk: Jena Friedman

Friedman’s debut collection, Not Funny, takes on the third rails of modern life in Jena’s bold and subversive style, with essays that explore cancel culture, sexism, work, celebrity worship, and…dead baby jokes.

In a moment where women’s rights are being rolled back, fascism is on the rise, and so many of us could use a breather as we struggle to get by, Jena applies her unique gifts to pull a laugh from things deemed too raw, too precious, and too scary to joke about. She shares her stories of taking on those who told her she was too brash, too edgy, and too “unlikable” to make it. She deftly dissects how we get coerced into silence on the issues that matter most, until they’ve gone too far afield to be turned back around again. And she shares her struggles to make it (-ish) in a world that, more often than not, would rather tune out than listen to a woman confronting the indignities we’ve been told to bear.

About the Author: Jena Friedman is a comedian, filmmaker, and creator of AMC’s Indefensible and Soft Focus with Jena Friedman on Adult Swim. She has worked on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Late Show with David Letterman, and her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, ARTNET, and The Guardian. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and won a Writer’s Guild of America award for her work on Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. She splits her time between Los Angeles and New York. Find out more at JenaFriedman.com and follow her on Twitter @JenaFriedman.

You must register for this event: https://libraryc.org/grotonlibrary/26333/register  Event will be recorded and available to view after.
