Asian American Representation in Literature: An Author Talk with Rebecca F. Kuang

Rebecca F. Kuang (R.F. Kuang) chats about her New York Times bestselling novel, Yellowface. Yellowface grapples with questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media.

June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars. But Athena’s a literary darling. June Hayward is literally nobody. Who wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. When June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers during World War I.

So what if June edits Athena’s novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song—complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? Doesn’t this piece of history deserve to be told, whoever the teller? That’s what June claims, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree.

White lies, dark humor, and deadly consequences await within the pages of Yellowface.

Registration is required: https://libraryc.org/grotonlibrary/47430/register

Author talks are recorded and available on demand.

The Virtual Author Series is generously funded by Groton Public Library's Circle of Friends.

June 3rd: Cookbook Pick-Up Day (While Supplies Last)

June 27th: Meet & Eat, 6 PM

CONTACT: Miss Kim  860-441-6750  kbalentine@groton-ct.gov
LOCATION: Public Space 2

Join the Groton Public Library's Summer Supper Club! At the beginning of each month, we'll have a display of cookbooks that are wrapped in paper to conceal their title and contents. The cookbooks will be labeled with one of these four meal categories: appetizer, side dish, entree, or dessert. Choose and check out a cookbook based on what meal category you'd like to make. Bring your cookbook and your creation to our monthly Meet & Eat. There, we'll dish about our culinary experiences, critique the cookbooks, and sample everyone's creations.

This program is open to cooking enthusiasts of all ages. Supplies are limited and given on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact Miss Kim at 860-441-6750 or kbalentine@groton-ct.gov.

For the Love of Mars: A Human History of the Red Planet with Smithsonian Curator Matt Shindell

Mars embodies everything that inspires us about space and exploration. For the Love of Mars surveys the red planet's place in the human imagination, beginning with ancient astrologers and skywatchers and ending in our present moment of exploration and virtual engagement.

Virtual Author: Psychological Thrillers and the Queen of Twists– An Author Talk with Freida McFadden

Freida will chat about writing psychological thrillers, her mega-bestselling hit The Housemaid series, in particular her forthcoming (June 11, 2024) third installment, The Housemaid Is Watching. Millie Calloway used to clean other people’s houses—now, she can’t believe this new home is actually hers. The charming kitchen, the quiet cul-de-sac, the huge yard where her kids can play. She and her husband saved for years to give their children the life they deserve.

But she’s wary of their new neighbor, and maid as well as other strange things on their street. Millie’s sure she sees a shadowy figure watching them. Her husband leaves the house late at night. And when she meets a woman who lives across the way, her words chill to the bone: Be careful of your neighbors.

Millie wonders: Did they make a terrible mistake moving their family here?

Registration is required: https://libraryc.org/grotonlibrary/48817/register

Author talks are recorded and available on demand.

CT African American History Museum Presentation

Jeffrey Fletcher, President of The African American Collections, Inc as well as Executive Director of The Ruby and Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum; Connecticut's only African American History Museum will discuss the museum and also bring a display of artifacts to share.

The Ruby and Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum was developed primarily to educate, but more importantly, to afford everyone an opportunity to see historical and cultural artifacts up close and personal.
“I can show you better than I can tell you.” – Ruby Fletcherare.

The artifacts reflect decades of turbulent times for African Americans in the United States during the period of slavery and the Civil Rights movement. It brings visitors up close and personal which is an experience that many have only read about in history books or seen in movies.

It embraces the teachings of tolerance, diversity, unity and educating people that there was a time when imagery played a significant role in how African Americans were perceived. The artifacts and memorabilia may seem to be difficult to view but they are a part of African American history that needs to be told just as much as the triumphs which were made by African American pioneers and trailblazers.

The exhibit is a strong reminder to ALL Americans to never forget the violence and racial injustice which displayed the ugly realities of dark times in our great history. Also, keeping in mind the blood, sweat and tears that were shed by those who fought so valiantly for their liberties.

“The Key To The Future Is Understanding The Past.”

Born and raised in Connecticut, Jeffrey grew up in Colchester, and is a graduate of The University of New Haven with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Upon graduation he worked as a clinician for The State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health for 14 years before becoming a Law Enforcement Officer in the City of New Haven, retiring after 22 years. Jeffrey currently resides in Branford.

Summer Supper Club: Meet & Eat Day

Join the Groton Public Library's Summer Supper Club! At the beginning of each month, we'll have a display of cookbooks that are wrapped in paper to conceal their title and contents.
