Film Noir Lecture Series
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Image result for film noir classics

Film noir is a mode of filmmaking that defined a short-lived moment of Hollywood films. While most of the films from this period that are now considered classics, were B movies at the time, the sharp eyes of French critics who saw them after WWII helped crystalize the stylistic elements that pushed them to become part of one of the most recognizable American film genres. Presented by Dr. Anthony Hayt, this six week course, will explore the defining aspects of film noir including its stylistic roots in German Expressionism; its thematic roots in American hardboiled fiction of the 20s, 30s, and 40s; and its legacy throughout the last 70years. We'll be watching and discussing: Double Indemnity (1944), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Chinatown (1974), Blade Runner (1982), and Blue Velvet (1986) all on the library's newly installed top-notch AV equipment.

Dr. Hayt received his Masters in English from SUNY Buffalo in 2006 with the thesis ‘In a Lonely Place: The Rubble Between Binaries’ and his PhD in English from the University of Oregon with the dissertation Remade in Our Image: Gender, Melodrama, and Conservatism in Post-9/11 Slasher Remakes. He is the author of the article ‘Moving Past the Trauma:? Feminist Criticism and Transformations of the Slasher Genre.’ His academic interests include Feminist Theory, Gender Theory, Genre Theory, Horror Film, Independent Film, Popular and Hollywood Film. After teaching at the university level for nearly a decade, he is now the co-founder and Head of Business Development of Maaterra Biotechnology.

THIS EVENT IS FULL.

Enjoy the beauty, quirks and happy surprises painting with watercolor can bring!  A new lesson and demonstration is presented each week.  In addition to watercolor techniques, we will cover: composition; color theory; and linear, color, atmospheric, and planer perspective.  Students will work at their own pace with guidance when needed.  This series is 4 2-hour sessions on Thursdays: May 10, 17, 24 and 31. The total cost for all 4 sessions is $65 due at the time of registration. You may register via phone (and pay by credit card) or stop into the library and pay by check/cash/credit card.

We'll need 5 students to register for this class to happen.
