Remembering the Cocoanut Grove Fire with Author Stephanie Schorow
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Stephanie Schorow, author of The Cocoanut Grove Fire, will explore the story of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire which took place in Boston in November of 1942 and  took the lives of nearly 500 people, including many from central Massachusetts.   Schorow recounts the events that led to the fire, its investigation, and its enduring mysteries. There will time for those who wish to share their stories of the Grove.  Also, Professor Nicholas A. Dembsey from Worcester Polytechnic Institute has used the Cocoanut Grove fire as a case study in his fire modeling course.  Students used modern fire modeling tools in combination with fire investigation data to simulate the fire as described by witnesses, and conducted an exercise using the Cocoanut Grove floor plan to limit fire growth in the building.  Professor Dembsey will briefly describe these exercises and what they found. Program is free and open to all.

Horizons for Homeless Children Volunteer Training
6:00 PM - 8:45 PM

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Horizons for Homeless Children.

Playspace Program: Horizons for Homeless Children created the Playspace Program with the belief that play is essential to healthy childhood development, and every child has the right to play.

To make healthy play possible for children living in shelters in Massachusetts, regional staff build and maintain developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed, “kid-friendly” spaces and stocks them with books, toys, games and arts materials. These Playspaces provide the opportunity for children to have a safe place to play, use their imaginations, heal from trauma, and just have fun.

Our volunteers, called Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), have a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the children’s lives by providing them opportunities for play that are critical for learning and growth.

Volunteering: Horizons for Homeless Children is looking for committed and dependable volunteers who:

  • Can commit 2 hours a week to volunteering at the same time, same location. Typically Monday-Thursday, daytime or evening.
  • Can commit 6 months or more to volunteering as a PAL.
  • Are at least 16 years old. If you are under 18, however, you will need a guardian to both attend the training and volunteer with you.
  • Can attend a one-time, 3-hour training that covers everything from homelessness on a state and local level to early childhood development.

Applying Online: You can complete a http://horizonschildren.org/application/  You will hear from a regional staff person within 48 hours of submitting your application. After the training, we place volunteers in about 3 weeks.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!
