An Irish Celebration of Harvest and Halloween in Story and Song
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Join singer, harper, and storyteller Kate Chadbourne for a lively program of songs, stories, and spirited company that celebrates Autumn and honors the old Irish festival of Halloween. Draw up to the fire to hear an Irish tale and enjoy the sounds of Kate’s beautiful big harp, Irish flute, and tin whistle. There will be laughter and mystery, a touch of the spooky, some Irish words to savor and a heartfelt fáilte – welcome – for all who gather!

Generously funded by the Robert L. Rice Memorial Concert Fund and the Rice Family.

Please enter by the Newton Place (Youth Library) entrance as the rest of the library will be closed.

Kate Chadbourne is an award-winning songwriter and poet, a scholar and teacher of Irish language and folklore with a PhD from Harvard, and a beloved performer at venues throughout New England.  She has been honored as a “tradition bearer” in the Revels Salon series and in the Gaelic Roots Concert Series at Boston College, and her music has been featured on NPR’s programs, Kate Chadbourne“Cartalk” and “All Songs Considered.”  She has released four solo CD’s, three collections of poetry, and has collaborated on recordings and live performances with Tim Janis, Lauren Passarelli, The Chanticleers, The Celtic Kates, and many others.  Named as one of “The Most Fascinating People” in Central Massachusetts by the Sentinel and Enterprise Newspaper, Kate is also the founder of The Bardic Academy, a school for writers, musicians, singers, and young scholars. She brings to her audiences the sounds of the harp, piano, tin whistle, Irish flute, and melodeon, a deep love and knowledge of traditional Irish story, a warm and welcoming presence, and a voice often described as “the voice of an angel.”

Tarot: An Introduction to Tarot Card Reading
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
This workshop will cover the history of the cards, the meaning of the suits (pentacles, swords, wands and cups), and the Major Arcana cards. Sally Cragin uses the Ryder-Waite deck and talks about the Renaissance-era origins of the cards.

“This is a “hands-on” workshop. Everyone will get to practice their reading skills in the group. Attendees will focus on creating a narrative with the cards, and no experience necessary. In a world where everyone is always looking at moving images, spending time focusing on the beauty and mystery of Tarot cards will help build your insight.”

About the presenter:

We Did It For You!
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

There was a time when women couldn’t have jobs and had no voting rights. Women were property passed from father to husband. High-school student Melanie must learn how things changed.

We Did It For You! Women's Journey Through History is the story of how women got their rights in America, told by the women who were there. It is an entertaining and quick tour through the journey, starting with the struggle women had in the 17th century Puritan Revolution through to our 21st century empowered women politicians. The play focuses on the stories of just some of the women who believed they deserved more than being treated as minors and being extensions of men. The few women portrayed in the play are not the whole story. Women have not only struggled to obtain their rights, they have made contributions that have been overlooked in many history books. In so many areas, women have been the first to accomplish things, have ideas, create inventions, and solve problems. We Did It For You! is now in a theatrical residency at the Marilyn Rodman Performing Arts Center in Foxboro, MA.

Thanks to a generous grant from Freedom's Way, the Fitchburg Public Library is proud to bring this play to Fitchburg! Attendance is free for all. The performance will be held at the Wallace Theater in McKay School, on the Fitchburg State University Campus.

The Freedom's Way National Heritage Area is the primary grant sponsor of this project.

Tales From the Home of the World's Worst Weather
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

An infamous place of extremes, 6,288-foot Mount Washington, New Hampshire has been captivating audiences for hundreds of years. Why is it called "Home of the World's Worst Weather"? This program will explore the unique life and work of the weather observers stationed on Mt. Washington, and learn why, for a mountain its size, it hosts some of the worst weather on Earth.

While many places on Earth experience severe weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continuously-staffed scientific outpost on this remote peak since 1932, providing the Observatory many remarkable stories and an intimate knowledge of the mountain.

Through the years, the hardy men and women of the Observatory have experienced white-out blizzards, stunning 110-mile vistas, and everything in between. They have survived a 231mph wind gust, endless days of disorienting fog, and snow drifts more than 20 feet tall. They have worked with scientists and celebrities, students and snow rangers. They have amassed one of North America's longest continuous climate records, and developed an intimate understanding of the place known as the "Home of the World's Worst Weather."

This program will be presented by the Observatory's Outreach Coordinator, Will Broussard. Will coordinates and leads programs on Mt. Washington's natural, cultural, and scienctific history.
