A Piece of My Heart dramatic reading
3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

FREE  The powerful, true stories of six women, five nurses and a country singer, sent to Vietnam and their struggle to make sense of the war.  This moving play tells the women's stories before and during the war and ends with each of the at the Vietnam Wall.  The Library, in collaboaration with Fitchburg State University, presents this reading in honor of the "Wall that Heals" replica display at Crocker Field July 12-15.

Directred by Kelly Stowell and starring Amy DeMar, Shanni Farrell, Lindsay Flathers, Lisa Nguyen, Angela Renzi, Natalie Scott, and Nick Wakely.

The play was written by Shirley Lauro based on the book  "A Piece of my heart: the stories of twenty-six American women who served in Vietnam" as told to Keith Walker.  The book includes the story of Donna Peck from Westminster.  The play has been named the "Most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation by the Vietnam Vets Association.

REVIEWS from a 2006 production--

"...Shirley Lauro's new play A PIECE OF MY HEART, is a catharsis as well as a coup de theatre...There have been a number of plays dealing with Vietnam...but none with the direct, emotional impact of Ms. Lauro's work...(she) has turned first hand impressions into a disturbing drama that evokes empathy for survivors as victims."-The New York Times

"Vietnam drama sparks...Surprised audiences...brought them to tears with sobs filling the auditorium and a standing ovation at the finish...drawing on the experiences of women in the Vietman War, Shirley Lauro's A PIECE OF MY HEART found solid dramatic context on the stage..."-Variety

"A PIECE OF MY HEART...takes up a subject largely missing from the reams of material written about Vietnam, namely the women sho served there...seamlessly interweaving the stories of the six principals...the play is exceedingly moving as the women gather at the memorial wall in Washington and experience a heart wrenching expiation---one that also affects those watching them from the audience...in not straining for a hit, the (theatre) may have produced one in A PIECE OF MY HEART."-The Wall Street Journal

"Shirley Lauro's cathartic...rousing...skillfully dramatized...creating an exhilarating sense of reconciliation and triumph. Ms. Lauro was able to take disparate characters and create a complete narrative from their stories, no small task."-Christian Science Monitor

"A PIECE OF MY HEART...one of the most compelling and valuable (plays) yet written on a subject...rarely treated with such straight-forward authenticity...mercurial staging...separates the soldier from the politics of his mission...needs to be seen now."-The Detroit News

"In A PIECE OF MY HEART...there's what amounts dramatically to an almost religious expiation---a final recognition of what actually went on in Vietnam and afterwards..."-The Irish Times

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

ScienceTellers!

Grab your spurs and journey with us to the Wild West, where a legendary bank-robbing outlaw is back in town, about to strike again! After the Sheriff mysteriously vanishes, two young kids must saddle up to foil the great heist — but not before stopping a runaway train, escaping an abandoned mine shaft and discovering how a mysterious piano can play an ‘instrumental’ part in putting a rotten cowboy back behind bars. Throughout this absolutely wild adventure story, volunteers from the audience will help us explore the fascinating science behind chemical reactions, acids and bases, combustion, air pressure, inertia and more. Don’t miss this classic action-packed western with ‘notes’ of science!

Author Talk- Historic New England: A Tour of the Region's Top 100 Landmarks
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Join authors Patricia Harris and David Lyon as they discuss their new book "Historic New England: A Tour of the Region's Top 100 National Landmarks ".

Historic New England: A Tour of the Region's Top 100 National Landmarks by [Harris, Patricia, Lyon, David]National Historic Landmarks are touchstones of our collective past that still resonate with our present. The six New England states have nearly 400 such places. Important doesn't always translate into interesting, however, so we have "Historic New England: A Tour of the Region’s Top 100 National Historic Landmarks"––those with the most intriguing and rewarding history. In addition to historic houses and tall ships, Historic New England examines such quirky spots as the country's oldest weather stations, carousels, and sandy beaches. From Fairfield, Connecticut’s Birdcraft Sanctuary to the Windjammers of Rockland, Maine, this book appeals to the historical enthusiast, the armchair traveler, and both local visitors and tourists alike. The authors, Patricia Harris and David Lyon, have written more than thirty books on travel, food, and art, including Boston, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont, and New Hampshire in the Food Lovers series published by the Globe Pequot Press. They live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, not far from the Longfellow House, and can be found online at HungryTravelers.com or on social media by the Twitter and Instagram handle of @hungrytravelers.

The Wonderful World of Bats
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The Wonderful World of Bats!– brings students into the exotic world of bats, and introduces them to echolocation. What is it? Why to bats echolocate?  Why can’t we hear them?  Are bats blind?  We’ll answer these questions and more.

Audiences will learn how vital bats are for maintaining a healthy environment (did you know that a Little Brown Bat eats up to 1000 mosquitoes in one night?). Via interactive dialogue and slides, children move beyond old stereotypes, to an understanding of the importance of bats for farmers, fruit growers, the rain forest, and us. See vivid photos of tropical fruit bats, the vampire bat, and some of our local bats. We will learn about bats in our attics, vampire bats, bat eyesight, echolocation, migration and hibernation. Eyes light up at such phenomenal creatures as Townsend’s Big Eared Bat, and the Pallid Bat. We will also listen to bat echolocation calls that are slowed down through a bat detector.
