7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Home of the Worlds Worst Weather

This exciting Zoom program is appropriate for adults, teens, and children ages 6 and up. Please register to be sent the Zoom link!

Bitter cold, dense fog, heavy snow, and record winds: Mount Washington is known worldwide for its unpredictable and dangerous weather. For a mountain its size, why is Mt. Washington called the “Home of the World’s Worst Weather”? While many places on Earth experience severe weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continuously-staffed scientific outpost on this remote peak since 1932, providing the Observatory many remarkable stories and an intimate knowledge of the mountain.

Join Mount Washington Observatory's Brian Fitzgerald on Zoom for an investigation into the unique life and work of weather observers stationed at the observatory year-round. We will explore how the mountain's weather works and what it can tell us about New England’s own weather patterns. This program will include interactive demonstrations, weather instruments, stunning photography, and video footage from the summit.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Fitchburg Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Land is a 3-time participant in the 1,150 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race. In addition to sharing photos and videos from the races, Land will tell first-hand stories and discuss how the bond between human and animal allows for the completion of one of the most difficult feats in all of sports. Fun fact: more people have made it to the summit of Mount Everest than have made it to the Iditarod finish line behind a team of dogs.

The Call of Kilimanjaro with Jeff Belanger (VIRTUAL)
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Get ready to climb 19,341 feet to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro – one of the famed Seven Summits – the roof of Africa. Based on his memoir, The Call of Kilimanjaro, author, adventurer, and TV host Jeff Belanger takes you on a breathtaking multimedia journey of Tanzania that’s spiritual, motivational, and uplifting.

After his brother-in-law Chris passed away, Jeff made the decision to take the trip of a lifetime, both in honor of Chris and in pursuit of clarity about his own life and goals. The Call of Kilimanjaro is a day-by-day record of Belanger’s ascent to the peak of Africa’s highest mountain. What he learned along the way transformed his life.

Jeff Belanger is an author, podcaster, storyteller, adventurer, and explorer of the unexplained. He’s written more than a dozen books that have been published in six languages, he’s the Emmy-nominated host, writer, and producer of the New England Legends series on PBS and Amazon Prime, he provides programs and lectures to audiences all over the world, and he’s been the writer and researcher for every episode of Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel.
