Reflections from the Pacific Crest Trail

Join Wendy for a powerful talk focusing on the reasons she hikes long trails, some of the adversity she has overcome (both in life and on the trail), and the universal lessons that she has learned on her long hikes, as well as a slideshow of photos taken along her PCT hike. A question and answer session will follow. It is Wendy’s hope that you will leave inspired and encouraged to follow your own dreams!

American Primitive Discussion
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

East meets west in a cabin in Concord: Walden and beyond.  Walden, or Life in the Woods is at the center of Mr. Wachusett Community College's year long Hunanties Project.  The Fitchburg Public Library is happy to be a part of this importnat discussion.  Thoreau's work is still relevant today.  His work gave rise to the "citizen science" movement.  Thoreau was also deeply influenced by Eastern religious and philosophical thought at t time when gtlobalization was not a buzzword.  And of course, Thoreau, the creator of the modern concept of civil disobedience, is the perfect vehicle for examining the power (and responsibility) of the individual citizen in a healthy democracy.

Poet Mary Olivier's book, American Primitive, will be discussed in relationship to Thoreau's teachings.  The fifty poems in American Primitive make up a body of luminous unity.  Mary Oliver's visionary poems enunciate the renewals of nature and the renewals of humanity in love, in oneness with the natural, in union with the things of this world. Lyrical and elegiac, Mary Oliver celebrates the primitiave things of America - the wilderness that survives both within our bodies and outside - in ."..the cords/ of my body stretching/ and singing in the/ heaven of appetite."

Light refreshments will be served.
