2020 Census Q&A
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

We are excited to announce that we’ve partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau to support the 2020 Census. As a partner, we’ll be working to ensure that our community is ?accurately represented. To learn about the ?upcoming census, visit 2020census.gov. Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau undertakes a mammoth task: counting all the ?people residing in the United States. This ?count affects the ?allocation of funding for our ?community’s public resources (e.g.?, roads, ?hospitals, schools), how we plan for the ?future, and our voice in government.

On March 4th from 11am to 12pm, we will have a Census Representative giving us an update on the 2020 Census and responding to any questions people might have.

We Did It For You!
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

There was a time when women couldn’t have jobs and had no voting rights. Women were property passed from father to husband. High-school student Melanie must learn how things changed.

We Did It For You! Women's Journey Through History is the story of how women got their rights in America, told by the women who were there. It is an entertaining and quick tour through the journey, starting with the struggle women had in the 17th century Puritan Revolution through to our 21st century empowered women politicians. The play focuses on the stories of just some of the women who believed they deserved more than being treated as minors and being extensions of men. The few women portrayed in the play are not the whole story. Women have not only struggled to obtain their rights, they have made contributions that have been overlooked in many history books. In so many areas, women have been the first to accomplish things, have ideas, create inventions, and solve problems. We Did It For You! is now in a theatrical residency at the Marilyn Rodman Performing Arts Center in Foxboro, MA.

Thanks to a generous grant from Freedom's Way, the Fitchburg Public Library is proud to bring this play to Fitchburg! Attendance is free for all. The performance will be held at the Wallace Theater for the Performing Arts at the McKay Building, on the Fitchburg State University Campus.

The Freedom's Way National Heritage Area is the primary grant sponsor of this project.

Monthly book club meets the second Wednesday of the month from September through June. The books for every month have been chosen. Come and discuss the books with us. No committment necessary. You don't even have to read the book. You can come and hear about the story and perhaps you'll want to read it. We meet in the afternoon and the evening.

The book this month is "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult

Meet Dog Musher Karen Land & Sled Dog Noggin
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Please join us for this all-ages event! Iditarod Dog Musher Karen Land will be here at FPL with her sled dog, Noggin, to talk about their adventures on the trail. Land is a 3-time participant in the 1,150 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race. In addition to sharing photos and videos from the races, Land will tell first-hand stories and discuss how the bond between human and animal allows for the completion of one of the most difficult feats in all of sports. More people have made it to the summit of Mount Everest than have made it to the Iditarod finish line behind a team of dogs.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Fitchburg Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Tales From the Home of the World's Worst Weather
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Bitter cold, dense fog, heavy snow, and record winds: Mount Washington is known worldwide for its unpredictable and dangerous weather. For a mountain its size, why is Mt. Washington called the “Home of the World’s Worst Weather”? While many places on Earth experience severe weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continuously-staffed scientific outpost on this remote peak since 1932, providing the Observatory many remarkable stories and an intimate knowledge of the mountain.

Join Mount Washington Observatory's Will Broussard for an investigation into the unique life and work of weather observers stationed at the observatory year-round. We will explore how the mountain's weather works and what it can tell us about New England’s own weather patterns. This program will include interactive demonstrations, weather instruments, stunning photography, and video footage from the summit. This exciting program is appropriate for adults, teens, and children ages 6 and up.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Fitchburg Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
