Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice

The Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice (CSSJ) at Brown University is a scholarly research center with a public humanities mission. Recognizing that racial and chattel slavery were central to the historical formation of the Americas and the modern world, the CSSJ creates a space for the interdisciplinary study of the historical forms of slavery while also examining how these legacies shape our contemporary world. We are also attentive to contemporary forms of human bondage and injustice.

Save the date!  The Gilded Age Tea at the Hotel Viking returns!

The Newport Public Library will welcome guests to their third annual Gilded Age Tea at the Hotel Viking, One Bellevue Avenue, Newport on Saturday February 20th from 2-4 p.m. This traditional English tea includes specially prepared finger sandwiches, assorted scones served with lemon curd, a selection of freshly baked tea breads and chocolate truffles which will be complimented with a glass of champagne and one’s favorite tea.

Proceeds from this event will go toward the on-going refurbishing occurring within the library with emphasis on the young adult and children’s areas. The library, is not a city department but an independent not for profit organization. Although generously funded by the city and state, in order to meet the myriad of needs of its patrons, it must reach
out to the community for additional support.

The afternoon will afford one the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for gift certificates for One Bellevue, a refined hotel eatery which features breakfast, steaks and favorite New England sea food dishes. Vintage attire is welcome but not required.  As space is limited, reservations are encouraged by calling Kevin at 401-848-4813.  The $28 per person includes the gratuity and complimentary parking.  Please, only one reservation per table.   The tea is a perfect way to conclude one’s participation in Newport’s “Winterfest” activities.

MARC LEVITT'S WOVEN IN TIME: THE NARRAGANSETT SALT POND PRESERVE

Woven in Time: The Narragansett Salt Pond Preserve is a 57-minute documentary film about a small piece of seemingly ordinary land located on the southern coast of Rhode Island. In the 1980s, archaeologists, working for a local developer, unearthed the remains of New England's only undisturbed Pre-Contact Period (1100-1400 AD) Native American coastal village. Used for dirt biking and adjacent to a suburban housing development and shopping center, this land, on a pond where the Narragansett Tribe located their origin story, became the center of an almost thirty year battle between the rights of property ownership and the social and cultural importance of preserving one of the most important archaeological sites on the East Coast of the United States.

Free and open to all.

Caroline and LindsayBoston-based Irish musicians Lindsay Straw (vocals, bouzouki, guitar) and Caroline O’Shea (vocals, flute, tin whistle) bring a seamless blend of traditional songs and tunes from Ireland and the British Isles to their performances. Years spent playing together as a duo and as part of The Ivy Leaf have shaped their core repertoire of traditional Irish tunes on the flute and tin whistle, of agile bouzouki and guitar accompaniment and fingerpicking, and of heartfelt songs and ballads. Join them for a St. Patrick's season performance at the library.

We will be reading Glory O'Brien's History of the Future - open to anyone that has read (or wants to read!) the book! Refreshments included!

In this masterpiece about freedom, feminism, and destiny, Printz Honor author A.S. King tells the epic story of a girl coping with devastating loss at long last--a girl who has no idea that the future needs her, and that the present needs her even more.
Graduating from high school is a time of limitless possibilities--but not for Glory, who has no plan for what's next. Her mother committed suicide when Glory was only four years old, and she's never stopped wondering if she will eventually go the same way...until a transformative night when she begins to experience an astonishing new power to see a person's infinite past and future. From ancient ancestors to many generations forward, Glory is bombarded with visions--and what she sees ahead of her is terrifying: A tyrannical new leader raises an army. Women's rights disappear. A violent second civil war breaks out. And young girls vanish daily, sold off or interned in camps. Glory makes it her mission to record everything she sees, hoping her notes will somehow make a difference. She may not see a future for herself, but she'll do anything to make sure this one doesn't come to pass. (from GoodReads)

It’s your turn to boss us around. Tell us what events you’d like to see at NPL for teens. Run a program based on your favorite activities. Review books you are reading anyway. Enjoy tasty snacks. And, earn community service hours for school or local organizations. This is a great way to have say in all things Teen and NPL. We are even revamping the YA area and want your thoughts on that too!
