    Contact: Ann Amaral   847-8720 x208   aamaral@newportlibraryri.org

Jan Shapin, local author of the newly published novel, Red Year, will speak at the library on September 9, 2017 at 2: pm.  “Pitfalls in Writing an Historical Novel,” will chronicle her many missteps in learning the genre. Signed copies of Red Year will be available for purchase.

Free and open to the public. No registration required.

Shapin, a long-time resident of Newport, was Executive Director of Community Development Training Institute, a national non-profit which co-developed Fifty Washington Square. She was   a board member, later Chair, of the Newport Housing Authority and oversaw the development Newport Heights. She moved to Wickford with her husband, Tony Stapleton, in 2013.

She studied playwriting at Catholic University in Washington, DC, screenwriting at the Film and Television Workshop and University of Southern California, and fiction writing at a variety of locations including Barnard College’s Writers on Writing seminar, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.  Her plays have been produced in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. She has received grants from the RI Council for the Humanities and has served as a juror in the RI State Council for the Arts screenplay fellowship award process
Red Year begins in China in 1927. Rayna Prohme, a red-haired woman from Chicago, becomes the confidante and lover of a Russian sent to prop up a failing Chinese revolution. When a right-wing army overcomes the government stronghold, Rayna accompanies the widow of the Chinese revolution’s founder to Moscow. Then things really start to go wrong.

Susan Breen, faculty member of NY Writers’ Workshop and author of the Maggie Dove mystery series, says of Red Year, “This beautifully written novel tells the story of a true American dreamer—a woman who charged into danger in search of passion, justice and some money to pay her bills. A fascinating story.”
Shapin is the author of two other historical novels, both published by Write Words Inc, of Cambridge, MD. A Snug Life Somewhere (2013) traces left-wing political events after the First World War through a young woman’s eyes. A Desire Path (2012) follows a love affair between a proper New England housewife and a disillusioned union organizer. Her books have received strong reviews from the Historical Novel Society, the Midwest Book Review and numerous fiction review blogs.
You can contact her through her website, www.janshapin.com, as well as read Chapter One of Red Year.
