mooc Are you interested in learning the basics of web design?  Do you like studying new material with other people in a face-to-face setting? If so, take a look at the introductory HTML & CSS course we're facilitating at the library this winter.

HTML and CSS are markup languages that form the building blocks of the web. In this online course from Udacity, you will learn how to convert digital design mockups into static web pages. Specifically, you will learn how to approach page layout, how to break down a design mockup into page elements, and how to implement that structure and design in HTML and CSS.

The library will be hosting Mary King on Sunday, March 5 at 2:00 pm for an all ages concert celebrating Irish culture in story and song.

Both of Mary King's parents are from Ireland and she was raised in that culture, taking Irish step dance lessons by age 4 and listening to her mother sing the songs of Donegal where she was born. She often visits her two aunts in Ireland, Bridget-Mary and Madge (now 97), who told her the stories of their youth — from "doing battle with the hay" to the monthly fairs that travelled the countryside bringing everything one might need, from pots and pans to the "dentist" who pulled out the tooth that was ailing you with pliers. They often spoke of the hard work of living solely off the land, where everyone worked on their small farm, including the children — all with great humor. Mary keeps the tradition of Irish music alive with the Celtic harp and her fiddle. Learn more about Mary at http://www.celticharpri.com/.

The library will hosting a Favorite Poem Reading in celebration of National Poetry Month. This event is open to participants who wish to share a favorite poem with the audience. The poems chosen must be poems you have read and not your original work and each presentation is limited to no more than 5 minutes.

This event will be facilitated by Tom Terceira, a local artist, poetry lover and experienced group facilitator and Mr. Ira Schaffer.  Mr. Schaffer is the  2016 winner of the Galway Kinnell Contest and holder of a Ph.D. in English.

The Favorite Poem Project is dedicated to celebrating, documenting and encouraging poetry’s role in Americans’ lives. Robert Pinsky, a former Poet Laureate of the United States, founded the Favorite Poem Project shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the post in 1997. Local Favorite Poem readings allow diverse members of a single community to come together to share, the poems they love. There have been nearly 1,000 Favorite Poem readings across the United States. Invariably, the readings contribute to a convivial community spirit. The only rule for an event affiliated with the Favorite Poem Project is that poems recited are NOT poems the readers or their friends or relatives have written—but, rather poems they have read, perhaps many times, and to which they feel a personal attachment. The reader is asked to discuss what the poem means to them and take under 5 minutes.

To find out more about The Project: http://www.favoritepoem.org/about.html

Pre-registration is required. Call 847-8720 x 208 to sign up or use the registration button below.
