A 50-minute dramatization of this year's Reading Across Rhode Island (RARI) pick: The Wright Brothers by David McCullough.

Living Literature is a collective of RI-based performing artists who have been celebrating the written word through readers-theatre style performances of non-dramatic literature since its inception in January 1996. Living Literature has created well over 100 presentations based on poems, stories, novels, plays, essays, biographies, articles, and oral histories, in libraries, schools, and other community venues throughout southeastern New England. This is Living Literature's seventh year creating programs for Reading Across Rhode Island, the signature program of Rhode Island Center for the Book at the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. Living Literature's readers-theatre style performance of David McCullough's The Wright Brothers is intended for both audiences who have and have not read the book.

Africa's Hell on Earth

Journalist/author and political prisoner Omar Bah discusses his memoir, Africa's Hell on Earth, in the Newport Room. He'll  describes his experiences as a reporter and political prisoner in West Africa, where he was beaten and jailed for his criticisms of long-term Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh.

Now an American citizen--and since arriving in the US, he has obtained a communications degree from URI and graduate degree in public administration from RWU.  He and his wife are founders of the Refugee Dream Center in Providence.  This organization, which he directs, bridges the gap in services provided to refugees by the Dorcas International Institute of RI and the Catholic Diocese of Providence.  Mr. Bah and his wife live in Providence the with their two children.

His talk is free and does not require registration.  Seating is limited, however, so interested patrons are encouraged to arrive early.

Local authors Rosemary Enright and Sue Maden talk about their new book, Historic Tales of Jamestown.

Their's is a fascinating history of Jamestown, tales of shipwrecks to summer days long past. The town was home to Camps Bailey and Meade, two training facilities for Union troops during the Civil War. When the steam ferries crossed the bay beginning in 1873, people traveled to the island to sample the town’s leisure and entertainment opportunities.

Beavertail Lighthouse and the breathtaking Clingstone stand as iconic landmarks long after their construction. After the Jamestown Bridge opened in 1940, suburban development in the North End replaced the hotels along the waterfront. Local authors Rosemary Enright and Sue Maden reveal stories of Jamestown’s past and evolution in this captivating collection of essays. Historic Tales of Jamestown is the newest addition to The History Press' American Chronicles series.

Astronomy for Everyone: Size & Scale of the Universe is an exciting family program (adult oriented) for ages 8 to 100 about the universe from the very small to the very large that lasts approximately 1 ½ hours. Astronomer Kevin Manning begins with an indoor presentation using slides and video. Following the indoor presentation, everyone heads outside - weather permitting - to view celestial objects in the night sky through a powerful hand-crafted telescope, such as the ice crystal rings of Saturn, craters on the Moon, etc.

Kevin is a gifted astronomer, having worked as a consultant with NASA, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory launched on the space shuttle with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and other ground-based observatories. Kevin won national and international awards in his field, was both a Wright Fellow and an Einstein Fellow, and did some work with Brookhaven National Laboratory. Besides the numerous workshops he's presented over the years at libraries, observatories, and science centers, some noteworthy ones include those made at Tufts University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, the National Science Teachers Association's National Convention, American Association for the Advancement of Science Breakfast with Scientists, and the National Parks Service.

Free and open to all. No registration required.
