edith cavellThe Newport Public Library's Books and Authors series welcomes Terri Arthur, author of Fatal Decision: Edith Cavell WWI Nurse. Based on historical fact, Arthur's novel explores the life of the nurse known as "the other Nightingale." Edith Cavell helped 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium, and was later tried in a military court and shot by a German firing squad for her actions. 

This program is free and open to the public. No registration required.

Bert UpsonBert Upson, former Newport resident, will return to Newport to present the story of his miraculous escape from the 78th floor of the South Tower with a presentation and book signing of On A Clear Day – An Eyewitness Account at the Newport Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Bert describes how it felt to be in the midst of this horror and shares his experiences of being sequestered by the NYPD in a nearby hotel until the power went out and his refuge had to be abandoned. On his way to the last subway north from the Battery he was confronted by the S.W.A.T team and later saved by them from a mugging in the haze and smoke of the dreary, frightening night. On A Clear Day is Upson’s first published book.

Dr. Thomas LeeDr. Thomas Lee returns to the library for a presentation called "The Word that Shall Not be Spoken: Suffering." As Chief Medical Officer for Press Ganey, Dr. Lee has a special interest in improving patient care and outcomes in hospitals. If you've been a patient recently, you may be familiar with the Press Ganey Survey that follows your release from the hospital regarding concerns about care, food, nursing, and medical staff performance.

MyanmarMerrilee Zellner will present a slide presentation on Myanmar (Burma), where she spent one month last winter traveling on a shoe-string budget. After decades of military rule, a civilian government was installed in 2011, opening it up for international travelers. Her presentation will reveal an exotic, profoundly Buddhist country, rich in history, culture, custom and tradition. Discussion will follow.

Merrilee is a native of Seattle, Washington. She travels internationally for a few months every winter. She is currently a real estate agent in the Newport area and owns a guesthouse in Newport.

Dr. Joseph J. BradyDr. Joseph J. Brady, a general surgeon from Kent Hospital will be discussing robotic surgery with the Da Vinci SI surgical robot and how having robots in the operating room has changed the surgical landscape. Dr. Brady did the first surgery at Kent Hospital in March.  A Q&A session will be part of the program. Open to the public.

A discussion of autism that will bring together experts, parents, and authors.

Asst. Prof. Stephen J. Sheinkopf (Dept. of Pediatrics, Women & Infants Hospital and Brown University Center for the Study of Children at Risk) will lead a discussion with authors and parents on this important developmental disorder that today effects 1 in 68 children in this country. This program is open to the public and will include a Q & A session.

A Tales for 2s program for children 2 years old will be held on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am from September 24th through October 29th.  The program features picture book read-alouds, rhymes, fingerplays, songs and a simple craft or activity.  This program is designed to help young children with developing verbal skills and promote an early interest in books and reading.


Registration is required for the full 6-week session and is limited.  Registration begins Tuesday, September 9th.  All storytimes are free and all materials are provided.  Held in the John Clarke Children's Program Room.

Book Buddies is a monthly book club for readers in grades 3, 4 and 5.  Children read and discuss a different book each month.  Children should read the book ahead of time and copies of the books are available at the Children's Desk.  At the meetings, children will discuss their thoughts and opinions about the book, and share their ideas over a simple snack.  Children will also enjoy a craft or activity related to the book.  For more information, visit the Book Buddies Blog:  http://www.nplbookbuddies.blogspot.com

The October meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 29th from 3:30pm-4:30pm in the John Clarke Children's Program Room.  Book Selections are forthcoming.

Marc SeiferMarc Seifer will discuss his latest book Framed!: Murder, Corruption and a Death Sentence in Florida. The book tells the story of Stephen Rosati a former Mr. Rhode Island and owner of a posh health club. In 1986, RI State Police arrested Rosati for the murder four years earlier of a drug dealer named Joseph Viscido, Jr. in Deerfield, Florida. Though Rosati could prove he was 1,500 miles away at the time of the murder, he quickly found himself in jail for the next seventeen months. Learn more about this book at the program. Fulweiler Jr.  Mr. Fulweiler will discuss some of his experiences as a maritime attorney as well as his book, A Swim: A Block Islander Who Refused to Drown, which is based on the true story of a man who fell overboard without a life jacket and spent approximately eleven hours treading water in the Atlantic Ocean.
