David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants By Gladwell, Malcolm
David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling GiantsCheck Our Catalog

A far--and free--ranging meditation on the age-old struggle between underdogs and top dogs. Beginning with the legendary matchup between the Philistine giant and the scrawny shepherd boy of the title, New Yorker scribe Gladwell returns continually to his main theme: that there are unsung advantages to being disadvantaged and overlooked disadvantages to being "advantaged."

    Contact: Reference Dept.   847-8720 x208   info@newportlibraryri.org

The library will hosting a Favorite Poem Reading in celebration of National Poetry Month. This event is open to participants who wish to share a favorite poem with the audience. The poems chosen must be poems you have read and not your original work and each presentation is limited to no more than 5 minutes.

This event will be facilitated by Tom Terceira, a local artist, poetry lover and experienced group facilitator and Mr. Ira Schaffer.  Mr. Schaffer is the  2016 winner of the Galway Kinnell Contest and holder of a Ph.D. in English.

The Favorite Poem Project is dedicated to celebrating, documenting and encouraging poetry’s role in Americans’ lives. Robert Pinsky, a former Poet Laureate of the United States, founded the Favorite Poem Project shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the post in 1997. Local Favorite Poem readings allow diverse members of a single community to come together to share, the poems they love. There have been nearly 1,000 Favorite Poem readings across the United States. Invariably, the readings contribute to a convivial community spirit. The only rule for an event affiliated with the Favorite Poem Project is that poems recited are NOT poems the readers or their friends or relatives have written—but, rather poems they have read, perhaps many times, and to which they feel a personal attachment. The reader is asked to discuss what the poem means to them and take under 5 minutes.

Peter Wood, PhD., will present Effective Public Speaking: The Essentials on Tuesday, April 25, from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Nearly everyone needs to speak publicly at some point. Job presentations, class projects, political events, and even wedding speeches are just some of the examples that you might face. Yet, a majority of people regularly identify public speaking as one of their biggest fears. This workshop is designed to break down effective public speaking into three main areas:

- Clarity
- Volume
- Tone/Rhythm

You will be given a number of exercises and techniques that will help you both reduce your nervousness and achieve higher levels of control over these three important areas of effective public speaking.

Please note: you will not be expected to speak in public for this workshop. It is designed to help you understand the necessary mechanics of public speaking and give you a set of tools that you can then use on your own.

Dr. Peter Wood has over 30 years experience in theatre and public speaking. He has coached the South Kingstown High School Speech & Debate team and has taught public speaking classes for Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as theatre classes at the University of Maryland and the University of Pittsburgh.

Free and open to the public. Use the registration button below to sign up or call 847-8720 x208.

Learn what the USDA Certified Organic label means about farmers’ growing practices. Hear the difference between Certified Organic and Chemical Free, Certified Natural, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and sustainable growing practices. Sanne will discuss the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Clean Fifteen.” Discover economical ways to eat organically by shopping seasonally, stocking up from store’s bulk bins taking advantage of sales and the advantages of growing your own food in containers, a community plot or your own  garden. Sanne will also discuss preserving the season’s bounty through canning, freezing and dehydrating for the long winter months.

Sanne Kure-Jensen is an experienced organic grower, cook, and food preserver. She has been an educator and beekeeper for over a decade. Sanne is the coordinator of workshops and outreach for the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Rhode Island (NOFA/RI) as well as an agricultural writer.

Humanity now, perhaps more than in any previous time, has an opportunity to create a new, saner, more loving world. This will involve a radical inner leap from the current egoic consciousness to an entirely new one. In very practical terms, Tolle leads readers into this new consciousness to learn to live and breathe freely.
