Peter Wood, PhD., will present Effective Public Speaking: The Essentials on Tuesday, April 25, from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Nearly everyone needs to speak publicly at some point. Job presentations, class projects, political events, and even wedding speeches are just some of the examples that you might face. Yet, a majority of people regularly identify public speaking as one of their biggest fears. This workshop is designed to break down effective public speaking into three main areas:

- Clarity
- Volume
- Tone/Rhythm

You will be given a number of exercises and techniques that will help you both reduce your nervousness and achieve higher levels of control over these three important areas of effective public speaking.

Please note: you will not be expected to speak in public for this workshop. It is designed to help you understand the necessary mechanics of public speaking and give you a set of tools that you can then use on your own.

Dr. Peter Wood has over 30 years experience in theatre and public speaking. He has coached the South Kingstown High School Speech & Debate team and has taught public speaking classes for Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as theatre classes at the University of Maryland and the University of Pittsburgh.

Free and open to the public. Use the registration button below to sign up or call 847-8720 x208.

URI Master Gardener Jodi Frank presents tips and creative ideas for successful container gardening on Wednesday, May 10, from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Container gardening is an adventure all to itself.  Let your creative juices flow and come ready to learn. This presentation is packed with information and tricks of the trade for beginner and advanced gardeners.  A power point with plenty of pictures will start the talk followed by a demonstration of the skill.

Jodi Frank is a relatively new Master Gardener, class of 2012, but not new to the world of gardening.  She has many wonderful memories of working with both her Grandfather and Father in their gardens and yards, which is where she credits her interest in today’s topic, Container Gardening.

Jodi, also known as Dr Frank, studied Therapeutic Recreation at Springfield College and is a Nationally Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).   She later earned her PhD in Sports. Leisure, and Exercise Science, now known as Kinesiology from UCONN.  Her love of creating fun and interesting containers for all to view can be traced to her therapeutic background. She combines her love of nature and how the body moves within it as her basis of creativity.

Dick Frank, Jodi’s Dad, took the class with his daughter, but has been an avid gardener for over 60 years.  He has 22 garden beds on his property, which include but are not limited to perennials, vegetables, roses and many types of fruit trees.  Dick has learned throughout the years to adapt and roll with changes that occur from nature and from aging.  He offers an interesting perspective on the advantages of container gardening.

Nick Horton’s talk will be an opportunity to experience the 'power of proximity' that Bryan Stevenson discusses in his book, presentations, and media appearances. Mr. Horton will relate some of the personal histories that provided the impetus for statewide criminal justice reform over the last decade, all of which have led to current efforts to pass the major Justice Reinvestment Legislative Package. Bryan Stevenson catalyzed these efforts when he visited Rhode Island in 2015 to attend a forum at Roger William University that focused on mass incarceration in the United States. Mr. Horton will narrate the ongoing campaign that stemmed from that event. He will then present a vision for ending mass incarceration in Rhode Island, rooted in his experiences working to keep his clients out of prison. His presentations will
include guest speakers who have graduated successfully from the 9 Yards program talking about their own personal journeys.

Mr. Horton has been working in Rhode Island within the field of criminal justice reform and prisoner reentry since 2004, when he graduated from Brown University. He has dedicated his career to ending the cycle of crime and reincarceration, one law at a time and one person at a time. As Policy Director for OpenDoors, Norton helped lead the successful campaigns to return the right to vote to people on probation, to reform court-debt related incarceration, to decriminalize marijuana, to push back against the over-criminalization of sexworkers, to expand Drug Court, and to reform the probation revocation system. Now, as Program Director for the last four years, he founded and runs 9 Yards,
an innovative prisoner reentry program that has cut recidivism by 71%.

A Tale Through Generations, Wars, Countries, and Religions
When a young woman visits a convent in Italy, she uncovers an extraordinary story of courage and compassion in the face of the brutal Nazi regime.

Prague is being torn apart by Hitler’s army. The Jewish community is being shipped off to concentration and extermination camps. One young woman, Katarina, wants to help them. She has a position in the government social work office and forms an alliance with her superior, Mademoiselle Zelinsky. Meanwhile, Jewish underground members have secretly connected with the naïve Katarina. Zelinsky, however, has an agenda of her own—and she may lead the entire operation to ruin.

Decades later, another young woman, Delilah, visits Tuscany, Italy. As she is touring the countryside with her friends and fiancé, she gets into a horrific car accident. Delilah is lucky there happens to be a doctor among the crowd of onlookers. He takes her to the convent of La Certosa di Pontignano to recover, where she meets Sister Katarina. Sister Katarina tells Delilah the story of the other Katarina and makes an unexpected connection with the young woman.

Dale Martellino blends history, suspense, and romance in this intricate tale. She addresses the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim European communities and modern issues of identity and devotion. The horrors of the Holocaust have left scars that will never be forgotten, but we should also celebrate the heroes who stood up to genocide and tyranny.

Dale Martellino lives in Middletown, Rhode Island. She is a retired English teacher from the Newport School Department. In addition to writing, Martellino loves traveling the world, both in real life and through her daydreams.

Dale Martellino will be discussing her novel, Precious Jewels on Saturday, June 3 at 2:00 pm. Free and open to the public. No registration required.
