Chicks and EggsCasey Farm will bring a live hen and baby chicks for children ages 4 and up.  Learn about how chickens are raised on the farm plus information on the life cycle of a bird and all about eggs.  Children will have the opportunity to touch and interact with the hen and the chicks.  No registration is required.  Held in the lower level program room.

Chick IncubatorCasey Farm will set up an incubator full of fertilized chicken eggs in the Children's Area of the library.  Children can watch as the eggs take about 21 days to hatch.  Once the chicks hatch they will remain in the library for about a week so that children may visit them.  The entire process may be observed live at the library or in real time over our web cam on the library website.

David PolanskyAward winning composer David Polansky will provide a music program called "Laughter in the Library" for children ages 4 and up.  Using trumpet, keyboard, and vocals, David will have the entire audience singing, dancing and laughing to his humorous melodies.  Featuring original songs and kids' favorites, children and families are sure to have an entertaining experience.  No registration is required for this free program.

Children ages 4-8 and their families are invited to come celebrate trees!  Weather permitting, Scott Wheeler, Newport's Tree Warden, will lead a tree walk in Aquidneck Park where children will learn about the names and needs of trees, and will also see the proposed "Giving Tree" bench that will be carved in the future from the large tree trunk in the park.  The walk will be followed by a reading of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and a tree craft. 

Children will receive a free book about trees and leaf-shaped cookies will be served.  No registration is required for this free program.

Celebrating Trees is part of Newport Arboretum Week.

Calvin Coconut: Trouble MagnetThe Book Buddies Book Club, for readers in grades 3, 4 & 5 will meet one Monday afternoon per month to discuss a popular children's book.  Registration is required.  Children should read the book prior to each month's meeting.

The April book is Calvin Coconut: Trouble Magnet by Graham Salisbury.  Nine-year-old Calvin catches the attention of the school bully on the day before he starts fourth grade, while at home, the unfriendly, fifteen-year-old daughter of his mother's best friend has taken over his room.

Children ages 3 and up and their families are invited to Bilingual Storytime with Dana Edward Ramey.  Stories in English and Spanish plus songs, poems and a related activity.  Excellent for families who speak Spanish as their first language as well as for children who are learning English or Spanish as a second language.  Held in the lower level program room.  No registration is required.

The Book Buddies Book Club, for readers in grades 3, 4 & 5 will meet one Monday afternoon per month to discuss a popular children's book.  Registration is required.  Children should read the book prior to each month's meeting.

The May book is Junonia by Kevin Henkes.  The week of her tenth birthday, Alice and her parents go to Sanibel Island, Florida, just as they do every year, but this time some of the people who are always there are missing and some new people have come, which unsettles Alice, who wants things to be exactly the same as they alway are

Registration begins for the Children's 2014 Summer Reading Program!  The theme for this year is all about science: Fizz, Boom, Read!  Learn about electricity, engineering, chemistry and more.  Sign up for the 7-week reading program by calling 847-8720 ext. 204, visiting the Children's Desk or visiting the library's website online.  Children are asked to read, or have read to them, a minimum of 6 books for the summer and to record their reading in a reading log or online.  Children who complete the program will receive a certificate and free book as well as additional prizes.  They will also be eligible to win grand prizes.

A variety of summer events and programs will be offered for children of all ages.  All programs are free and all materails will be provided.  Visit the Kids Page of the library's website for more information about the 2014 Summer Reading Program.

ENRICHri, a non-profit, Rhode Island-based, secular homeshool group will present a free workshop for parents interested in homeschooling.  Topics for discussion include homeschooling laws in Rhode Island, reasons for choosing homeschooling, socialization and curriculum planning.  Children are asked to remain at home as this event is geared toward adults.

Registration is required and begins on Monday, May 12th.  To sign up, visit the children's desk or call 847-8720 ext. 204.  Held in the lower level program room.

Kick-off summer reading with a presentation by Mad Science!  As one of the world's leading science enrichment providers, Mad Science is on a mission to spark the imagination and curiosity of children to show them that science is all around them. Mad Science provides exciting hands-on / minds-on "edutainment", and will demonstrate a number of experiments from that will make science Fizz, Pop, and Boom!

No registration is required for this free program.  Held in the lower level program room.  Ages 4+.
