Celebrate Heros of all kinds at the Newport Public Library this summer!  Registrations are being accepted for the 2015 Children's Summer Reading Program, "Every Hero Has a Story". 

Preschool children through children entering 6th grade in September are eligible to participate.  The program runs from June29th - August 12th.

To complete the reading program, children need to read, or have read to them, at least 6 books during the summer.  Books can be logged in the library or online.  Summer reading participants will receive a wallet card good for free or discounted admission to many local and state attractions.  Children who complete the program will receive a personalized certificate, a free book, and other prizes.  Readers who complete the program and attend library events will also be elebible to win grand prize raffle baskets.  Children visiting Newport for just a short time may complete a modified version of the program to receive a certificate and a small prize.

Tween Program:  Ages 8 - 12

How and why do objects fly?  Explore aerodynamic forms, wind, friction, and drag through the creation of a handmade art kite.  Alter paper to fly, create paper airplanes, and make a sled kite.  Design a simple graphic composition for kites that will be visible from the sky.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Newport Public Library and presented by the Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art

Hampstead Stage Company presents a 1-hour live stage production of Robin Hood.  Robin Hood tells the tale of a more unconventional hero, Sir Robin of Loxley, who fights against the greedy and jealous ruler, Prince John and his lackey, the Sheriff of Nottingham.  Robin's band of merry men, including Friar Tuck and the lovely Maid Marian will also appear and are heroes in their own right.

Learn about the "persistence of vision" - the name often given to the way the human brain blends sudden changes into smooth motion.  This interpretation by our brains is what makes movies possible.  Make a mini-animation to take home, and work in small groups to make a stop-motion film using found objects.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Newport Public Library and presented by the Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art

Celebrate the end of Summer Reading with an Outdoor Fair held in the Aquidneck Park outside the library! 

Discover what it takes to be a true superhero with Jungle Jim's Superhero Training Show @ 11:00am

Puppet Workshop with Sue Klau @ 12:00pm

Local artist, Amber Prendergast will provide face painting @ 12:00pm

Some of our local heroes, Newport firefighters will be here with a truck @ 12:00pm

Certificates, free books and prizes will be awarded to children who have completed the reading program.  The fair will also feature sand art, ice cream and fun!  No registration required.  In case of rain, the event will take place in the lower level program room.
